New Details Point To Political Motive In Census Lynching
Today’s news reports say slain census worker Bill Sparkman was found naked with his hands, feet, and neck bound with duct tape. His census ID was duct-taped to the body and the word “Fed” was written on his chest with a felt-tip pen. His clothes were found on the seat of a pickup truck 50 yards away with its tailgate down. The body was in a cemetery with the feet touching the ground. The coroner determined the cause of death was asphyxiation.
Although there reportedly are meth labs and marijuana growing operations in the area, law enforcement officials have found nothing to link between those activities to Sparkman’s death.
The body was found by a local family who went to the cemetery to visit the graves of relatives.
It appears Sparkman was abducted and killed elsewhere, then the body was hauled to the cemetery lying in the bed of the pickup truck, and that a considerable amount of time was spent preparing the body for display, and putting it on display. It was meant to be found, and was meant to make a “statement.” Drug criminals wouldn’t do that; they wouldn’t want the body found, and they wouldn’t go to such lengths to call attention to it. This was the work of someone who wanted attention, who wanted to intimidate, who wanted to send a message.
Anti-government crazies, of course. I say this in the plural because it would take more than one person to overpower a grown man, and to manhandle the body in this fashion. I’d guess that authorities are looking for between two and five men. And if so, they’re more likely part of an organized group, say a militia group, than a family grouping or an ad hoc bunch of guys who, say, got drunk and committed a spur-of-the-moment act. No, this was a carefully planned and executed lynching reminiscent of the 1960s KKK Mississippi slayings.
And the federal government’s response to this lynching should be the same as it was to those killings. The FBI should flood Clay County with FBI agents. They should start by looking at local militia groups, and by reading newspaper files and checking out anyone and everyone who has written an antigovernment letter to the editor in the last 5 years, especially anyone who has spouted anti-census animosity, or gone into a local hardware store and made a big purchase of duct tape lately.
We know who they’re looking for: White guys, rightwingers, teabaggers, gun nuts, guys who brandish AR-15s, sovereign citizens, guys who spend their weekends playing soldier games in the woods with paintball guns.
This was a deliberate and premeditated attack against the U.S. government by domestic terrorists, and it should be investigated and prosecuted as the terrorist attack that it in fact was.
