In my meanderings, reading many Alaska folks’ comments about how Palin’s husband was always sitting in on meetings or cc:d emails. Well, this site was kind of curious:
“In the aftermath of the Walt Monegan firing, one question keeps surfacing over and over again; why does the governor’s husband, Todd Palin appear to hold so much power?
After all, Nancy Murkowski or Susan Knowles were never accused of pressuring a commissioner or inappropriately sitting in on meetings that should have been private.
The stories started last year when Representative Ralph Samuels told me about going into a meeting, he thought would be private, with Governor Sarah Palin. Much to his surprise, Todd Palin was there and proceeded to sit through the entire meeting.
Other lawmakers have shared similar stories and were shocked at how inappropriate Todd’s presence was at meetings with the governor. Yesterday on the Dan Fagan Show, Representative Jay Ramras mentioned that Todd was working lawmakers offices during the ACES debate. …”

Perhaps Palin or her Husband don’t feel confident that she can manage the Governors job on her own? Personally, I’m just wondering, Who is minding all them Kids at home?

It’s really amazing. You have long-time Democratic feminists calling Palin a bad mother for not staying home to raise her babies, exposing them for putting partisanship over women’s rights. In that context, it makes the vague slogan “Country First” more understandable. The Republicans have positioned themselves as being the party that’s working toward making America better, and the Democrats are being exposed as being the party that will put partisanship above core feminist values.
One week ago this election was largely a vote on the war. If you’re against the war vote for Obama, if you’re for the war, vote for McCain. That’s history. The Republicans have flipped things on their head. They’ve co-opted the change message, and the Democrats now need to come up with a reply, quick.

Name one Democrat who has argued this about Palin. The only person I’ve heard make this argument has been Laura Ingraham.
The Democrats have argued against her policy positions and qualifications, not her family life, and the McCain campaign implicitly has admitted the Dems are correct in their critiques. If Palin were ready for prime time, the campaign would not have announced that she will only do scripted events and not take any questions.

Remember what happened in the 2000 VP debate between Cheney and Lieberman: the conventional wisdom was that Lieberman would mop the floor with Cheney (who is a dull speaker when not telling his audience to go F themselves), but Lieberman is actually pretty boring himself, Cheney was the (perceived) outsider against the US senator, and Cheney got a couple of memorable zingers in. This was all he needed.

Not much time today, but one point you made deserves a straight answer.
“Why did Obama claim he’d debate McCain any place any time yet ran when McCain challenged him to some town hall debates in June and July?”
How about because helping your cash-strapped opponent get free air time when your message is getting out and his isn’t is bad politics?
You’ll notice that I’m not trying to give some sort of high moral answer. Simple pragmatism.
Ralph Nader and Bob Barr are demanding (as loudly as they can) debates for this very reason. They do not have the resources to get their message out otherwise.
We’ll get three debates, which is sufficient to highlight the differences between the candidates. More than that becomes a way for the the candidates with less resources to overcome the advantage of those with more.
Frankly, I don’t see that as a bad thing, but as the candidate with the strongest campaign, I understand why Senator Obama chooses not to give up that advantage.
53
Puddybudspews:
So John Barelli@52, your candidate runs around America claiming he’ll debate John McCain yet he doesn’t because it will get John McCain additional presidential funds and you call that pragmatism?
If you are so great an orator, your debating skillz shoudld shutdown the money flow by making your opponent look worthless.
Rick Warren did that really well at Saddleback. Did you miss it? It was a disaster.
And if you remember Andrea Mitchell a leftist MSM supporter said McCain cheated. Well we found out later – “Pastor Rick Warren, in an effort to increase the candidates’ comfort level with his pioneering format, gave each of them a heads-up on several of the hardest questions he asked Saturday night during his “the Saddleback Civil Forum on the presidency.”
A source close to Warren tells the candidates knew in advance they would be asked their own greatest moral failure, America’s greatest moral failure, and the three wisest people in their lives.
The source said Obama also knew he would be asked if he’d be willing to commit to an emergency plan for orphans, like President Bush has for AIDS. GIVE OBAMA CREDIT FOR ANSWERING CANDIDLY: “I cheated a little bit. I actually looked at this idea ahead of time, and I think it is a great idea.””
So if some of the questions were know ahead of time why did Obama stumble and stutter most of his hour?
But John, you forget: “John McCain actually requested that he and Barack Obama do the forum together on stage at the same time, making these kinds of after-the-fact complaints moot.” So why did Obama reject that notion?
Do you remember this DU thread? “I won’t win cool points for this, but McCain is doing excellent so far, better than Obama,” expresses something less than a vote of confidence for Obama.
…I honestly can’t remember hardly any of Senator Obama’s answers to the questions that were asked, while McCain has had at least SOME memorable answers.
I think it was a mistake for Senator Obama to do this forum.
I’ve been shocked at how well McCain has done compared to what I was expecting. That very well could be it.
I don’t know why Obama went there – he comes across as a poor second to our “McZero the hero”.”

Puddy on Saddleback
Puddy, as usual you are right on. At Saddleback waht we saw was the future! That future is an ordinary guy, Rick Warren feeding scrapoes to a per … Obama!
Obama was impressive, kinda like my accountant! You know the guy? He has an English degree form Yale and an MBA from WAZU. Big fucking deal, he works for me and I graduated, barely, Gonzaga!
Why does this Jewish guy work for me? Because I have money! Obama will end up the same .. workign for some smart white dude, probably in a lobbyist’s office where he cn be put on show as “that smart black guy” who ran for President!
I can just see it now … Shaikh ben Hussein will have a sports party to watch his mew basketball team, and invite his bud Brack along to do “color.”
That is what intellectuals are good for. Give me the ordoinary wisdom of Reagan any day over a smart ass. whether it is Obama, Carter, or any of the know it alls here.
Being a great orator does not necessarily translate into winning the rather stylized debates that have been recent practice.
Your opinion of the Saddleback interviews gives some examples of that. Oh, and no, I do not agree that it was a “disaster”. On the contrary, I think both candidates did what they wanted to do, although it may have been more beneficial for Senator McCain than Senator Obama.
Senator McCain needed to connect with the “base” (whatever that means) and gave short, clear, simple answers, even when (my opinion here) the topic wasn’t really appropriate for a simple answer.
He gave good sound bites, and the newsies just loved it.
Senator Obama needed to show evangelicals and other devout Christians that he wasn’t the evil boogie man that some evangelical leaders have painted him to be. He gave lengthy, nuanced answers on complicated, difficult issues.
Take your favorite topic, for example. Senator Obama would not give a simple answer as to when “human rights” should be given to a fetus in utero. The closest he got was saying that exactly when a fetus becomes a person is “beyond his paygrade”.
(NOT, as Mr. Thompson said, when we should protect human life, but only when a fetus is actually a person.)
YOU may believe that the moment that sperm enters the egg, it becomes a person, with that spark of awareness that we call “spirit” or “soul”, but I do not, and for every Biblical reference you may interpret as saying so, I can find others that can be interpreted as disagreeing.
And we haven’t even addressed the topic for those people that do not see the Bible as being definitive.
Unfortunately, when truncated for the evening news, that kind of answer gives the impression of “waffling”. Senator Kerry had the same problem.
Well, so much for a “quick response”. Senator Obama did what he needed to do at Saddleback. He showed evangelicals that he respected them and would find places where he and they could work together.
It will probably not win him many votes (although I doubt that it will cost him any votes) but as for laying the groundwork for bringing the country together after the election, it was an important thing to do.
And, I really like seeing a candidate that is looking beyond just getting elected.
Now I’ve really got to go.

He says he will re-evaluate the future of his site in November 2008. But I am not sure how he can lose: if the Democrats win, then he, like other people who can’t make money on their own, will be fully cared for by government; that is the exact agenda David pushes, and that his candidates support. Of course his “present” votes were in the Illinois legislature. Media Matters comments:
On page 116, Freddoso addresses Obama’s “present” votes in the Illinois state Senate, citing a December 20, 2007, New York Times article in claiming that “other Illinois senators say” Obama’s 130 “present” votes was an “unusually high” number. In fact, the Times article does not quote any Illinois state senators commenting on the frequency of Obama’s “present” votes, nor does it report that other Illinois senators considered the frequency of Obama’s “present” votes to be “unusually high.” Indeed, while neither the Times nor Freddoso provided substantiation for his claim that Obama had an “unusually high” number of “present” votes, PolitiFact.com quoted Christopher Mooney, a political scientist at the University of Illinois-Springfield, saying of Obama’s “present” votes: “Everyone I’ve spoken to who’s familiar with this, including lobbyists and people who are engaged in opposition research, say the number of times he voted present on a proportional basis was probably a little less than average.”

John Barelli really tried: ‘YOU may believe that the moment that sperm enters the egg, it becomes a person, with that spark of awareness that we call “spirit” or “soul”, but I do not, and for every Biblical reference you may interpret as saying so, I can find others that can be interpreted as disagreeing.
As soon as I read that I immediately thought of Psalm 139:13-16 – For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.
Jeremiah. 1:5. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.
Why did I use the Old Testament? Cuz some here don’t believe in the New Testament.
But then Exodus comes to mind: Exodus 21:22-25 – If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court allows. But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
WTF? The number of times “present” is below average? What kind of law making activity is the Illinois Senate? Well how does that excuse his “present” votes Daddy love? A I recall… just 10 seconds ago, Barack obama is running for president not the other “higher average present voters”.

@74 Do you want to be stoned to death?? “Baaa” means no, Pudnut!
Exodus 22:19
“Whoever lies with an animal shall surely be put to death.”
Actually, though, the verse in Exodus which you have as “gives birth prematurely” is also translated “has a miscarriage”. The King James Version reads “so that her fruit depart from her”.
We can debate this, but this really isn’t the place and would just bore most of the folks here. It certainly wouldn’t convince anyone (on either side).
It seems needless to say, but please understand that I actually do both understand and respect your opinion in this area. (Expect no quarter in other topics.) I doubt that you could convince me that the spark of personality exists in an embryo, but neither do I expect that I could convince you otherwise.
And believing as you do, I cannot see how you could not be pro-life. One of the tragedies here is that there are certainly areas where both camps agree, but cannot seem to work together.
While I am pro-choice, I do not ever want abortion to be the only choice. We need strong support programs for pregnant women, young mothers and women who find that they cannot handle the responsibility of motherhood.
Whether an abortion is ending a life or just a potential life, it is nonetheless an important and life-changing decision, not to be taken lightly, and should never have to be made based on the unavailability of help in carrying, delivering, or caring for the baby.
But I am convinced that it is also a decision that must not be made by the government and enforced by law.
Well John, I’m glad I didn’t let you down with my Bible verses. We need to meet sometime over some good food.
Your last sentence paragraph is really interesting. The only thing a liberal doesn’t want mandated by government.
Where are you on the Fairness Doctrine?

But then again Another TJ would support this type of attack directed at Sarah Palin: “Palin was a supporter of [MSNBC analyst] Pat Buchanan, a right-winger or as many Jews call him: a Nazi sympathizer,” Obama spokesman Mark Bubriski wrote in an email.” – Yes that is fair game to Another TJ, even when it was later proven wrong and of course there was no retraction, no fact check, etc.
But Another TJ, when you read the TPM, Rosenberg wrote: “Bottom line: The Biden choice pretty much eliminated Obama’s “Jewish problem.””
But Obama had a Jewish problem?

Puddybudspews:
But you know the Media Another TJ, they get it wrong so many times. Just this week Obamasmedia (so yelling loser boy can’t claim pajamas media) accused Palin of slashing funding for special needs programs by 62%. But who prepared that proposed budget she’s being accuse of? Her predecessor. She actually raised them 175%, just as she was accused of slashing funding for pregnancy prevention programs when she raised those as well.
“I just watched CNN’s Soledad O’Brien sandbag former White House Communications Director Nicole Wallace by asking her how Sarah Palin can claim to be a defender of special needs children when she cut the budget for that Alaska office by 62 percent. Wallace wasn’t familiar with the charge — which isn’t surprising, since it’s only being made on DailyKos and another liberal site. (Tip for Ms. O’Brien: DailyKos is not a reliable news site.)”
“So the Netroots and CNN allege that Palin cut special needs funding by 62 percent, by crediting her with the budget proposed by a political opponent. And the truth is that rather than a 62 percent cut, she’s actually increasing special needs funding by 175 percent.”
So Another TJ and other Moonbat!s stop trusting Daily Kurse and his poisonous sticky warm man-juice kool-aid. They got another one wrong on Palin, just like Trig is her baby.
So amazing CNN has Daily Kurse on retainer.
That’s why 51% say reporters are trying to hurt Palin; 39% say she has better experience than Obama

Shadow Governor?

The Democrats have argued against her policy positions and qualifications, not her family life, and the McCain campaign implicitly has admitted the Dems are correct in their critiques. @32: She will still have to appear at the debates, but the bar will be high for Biden and low for Palin in a number of ways: sympathy will be with Palin as the political outsider and hockey mom, and suspicion/expectation will be on Biden as the skilled debater and senator.

John Barelli spews:
Hi, Puddy.
Not much time today, but one point you made deserves a straight answer.
Puddybud spews:
Did you remember the DUmmys commentary?
DUmmys Democratic Underground Moronic Moonbat! Yellings

A quick response, then I’ve got to go.

Goldy to Re-evaluate HA in November 2008
Local Media News
by pudge, 09:51 AM
David, the man who runs a local liberal web site bemoans the lack of liberal advertising on his site (warning: not safe for work), as well as the complaints he gets for allowing conservative advertising.
He says he will re-evaluate the future of his site in November 2008. But I am not sure how he can lose: if the Democrats win, then he, like other people who can’t make money on their own, will be fully cared for by government; that is the exact agenda David pushes, and that his candidates support. If the Republicans win, then the self-righteous anger of the left will fuel the site for many months to come.
So either way, he can feed off the misery of others for as long as he wishes.

Yeah, right. 18 million Democrats voted to make a woman their presidential candidate, and John McCain single-handedly appoints a woman to the vice-presidential slot, and in your mind that makes Democrats misogynists and Republicans feminists. Up is down. White is black.
I swear, Republicans believe five impossible things every morning before breakfast.
Daddy Love spews:

I agree, except that then I don’t understand why these guys are crowing about Scandalah Palin so often?
Yes, the Republicans at the Republican National Convention liked her. But she doesn’t seem to be doing so well elsewhere.
Then you’d think she’d do a press conference instead of a speech written by someone else, wouldn’t you? I have a feeling she’s not going on Meet the Press anytime soon. Biden will be on there this Sunday, BTW.

More good news for McCain:
Nearly 10% and McCain doesn’t say ONE thing about the econopmy in his “Did you remember I was a POW?” speech at the RNC.
And you guys think he can win doing that? I understand better why Republicans do not value intelligence.
Update: My bad. McCain did say one thing about the economy. He said he’d be fighting for some couple who lost their “real estate investments” in the current crisis. Not their home.
Daddy Love spews:
That darned CNN is telling us today that Sarah Palin is such a “real reformer,” not at all like all those old corrupt power-abusing Republicans in Washington, that she “improperly obtained her former brother-in-law’s state police personnel files and cited information from those records to raise complaints” against him. That’s besides firing his boss when he refused her pressure on him to get the trooper fired.
How come the new kind of Republicans seem just like the old kind of Republicans?
Daddy Love spews:
Sarah Palin is not taking questions from the media.
But McCain promised that his VP would appear on Larry King:

Since you have an interest in drug laws, etc., I think it would be interesting to read a post from you where you take a look at the Skagit county killer. You know, that guy who killed six people the other day. He has a long criminal history, including a long history drug use. “But there’s no connection between drug use and crime! Why do people always tie the two together?” Calm down, Lee, I’m not saying that at all. I’m just saying Perhaps you could somehow mix together your thoughts on how you would rate Gregoire’s effectiveness in dealing with mentally ill criminals, especially those with drug dependencies, and what more can she do to help them, and protect us?
Puddybud spews:
Well that’s enough Bible for now.

Exodus 22:19
“Whoever lies with an animal shall surely be put to death.”
John Barelli spews:
Ah, Puddy. Exactly the verses I expected.
Puddybud spews:

Apparently Another TJ can’t accept his friends on the Huff Post or the liberal MSM as proof they are attacking Sarah Palin on working on the campaign over her family life.

Apparently the DUmmys site doesn’t count … but I thought the DU in DUmmys stood for Democratic Underground.
Apparently Barney Frank doesn’t count
Apparently Gloria Steinem doesn’t count
The list is much longer Another TJ
Puddybud spews:
But you know the Media Another TJ, they get it wrong so many times. Just this week Obamasmedia (so yelling loser boy can’t claim pajamas media) accused Palin of slashing funding for special needs programs by 62%. But who prepared that proposed budget she’s being accuse of? Her predecessor. She actually raised them 175%, just as she was accused of slashing funding for pregnancy prevention programs when she raised those as well.
http://www.weeklystandard.com/.....ut_spe.asp
Another TJ spews:
It’s now been 24 hours since I asked for a single example of a Democrat criticizing Palin for neglecting her family in favor of working, and the total still stands at zero.
It’s safe to say we can toss that charge on the pile with the rest.
Another TJ spews:
It seems the McCain/Palin campaign is having a similar problem to the one our afflicted friends on this site are experiencing: http://blogs.abcnews.com/polit.....ses-o.html
Another TJ spews:
As we begin Day Three of the GOP Party’s failure to find Democrats criticizing Palin for her family life, I’d like to point you to an example of a feminist criticizing Palin for her policy positions, and thus making my point:

Another TJ spews:
Here’s another example of a feminist group criticizing Palin’s stated policy positions:
http://www.naral.org/elections.....palin.html
Everyone should read this. It doesn’t even mention that Palin has a family, let alone criticize her for neglecting it.
Again, it makes my point perfectly.
