Gregoire’s transportation mess

Yesterday the Reason Foundation released a national study ranking the road conditions in all 50 states. Washington ranked 39th in overall performance and cost-effectiveness — down from 32nd place in 2007. The state ranks 42nd in rural interstate condition and 45th in urban interstate condition. Shockingly, Washington ranks 32nd when it comes to deficient bridges; One out of 4 Washington bridges is deemed structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.
You mean like the viaduct? Yesterday the Seattle Times reported that — despite having spent or committed $1 billion in funds earmarked for replacement of the viaduct –the ailing structure still stands. Last month the state Department of Transportation proposed 8 possible replacement options, and tearing down the viaduct and replacing it won’t begin for at least another year. But with $1 billion of the $2.8 billion total already gone, and inflation driving replacement costs up $10 million each month, one has to wonder how much more Christine Gregoire’s lack of leadership on this critical issue is going to cost the taxpayers and her own re-election chances.
Because we have free speech in this country (or did have … until the Busheviks began arresting people for having bumper stickers they don’t like), and the courts have ruled that government can’t censor or regulate what candidates say, even when their political ads are outrageous lies, then it seems to me if McCain can run ads picturing Obama with Britney and Paris, we have the same right to put up billboards picturing McCain with Hitler. If fact, I think we should! I’m not insinuating that McCain is a Nazi. All I’m saying is, if he wants to play this game, we should play it too! And when he stops, I’ll stop, but not until then.

Britney and Paris are professional celebrities whose images and names are their commercial stock in trade, and it seems to me they could sue McCain for using their property without permission.

Actually, I’m not upset by McCain’s attack ads against Obama. They make him look like a feeble and cranky old man. Most people are worried about jobs, health care, inflation, and the endless stream of coffins coming back from the GOP’s quagmire in Iraq. I don’t think they’re impressed by McCain’s grandstanding.
John McCain is just an old man who worries that, after all these years of fawning attnetion from the press, someone else has their attention. He reminds me of Norma Desmond, the faded movie star who still dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen.
I can just see it the day after Election Day in November: “Alright, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close up.”

The economy is the primary concern now. The “endless” stream of coffins from Iraq has dropped to its lowest number since the war began. It’s the ones from Afghanistan that are on the rise.

Oh – and the drilling argument – pure puffery – that drilling will do anything to gas prices:
1. It will have no effect for 10-15 years
2. Even then it will change prices by all of 1-2 cents/gallon.
3. And we are EXPORTING more of our oil than ever before – so we will be opening up new domestic oil supplies for EXPORT:
“While the U.S. oil industry want access to more federal lands to help reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, American-based companies are shipping record amounts of gasoline and diesel fuel to other countries.
A record 1.6 million barrels a day in U.S. refined petroleum products were exported during the first four months of this year, up 33 percent from 1.2 million barrels a day over the same period in 2007. Shipments this February topped 1.8 million barrels a day for the first time during any month, according to final numbers from the Energy Department.
The surge in exports appears to contradict the pleas from the U.S. oil industry and the Bush administration for Congress to open more offshore waters and Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.”

Oh – and the oil companies had another record quarter (all time) for any business – ever. And McCain wants to open up more drilling areas and give more tax breaks to the oil companies – who use less than 1% of their profits for alternative energy. If we trust and wait on the oil companies – we will slide into the dust bin of history and remain reliant on expensive oil forever. The free market is simply not working with the eneregy monopolies – it doesn’t take an ignorant republican to figure this one out.
