    The Senate has just passed a clean DHS funding bill. That puts the ball in Boehner’s court. If the government’s homeland security functions shut down tonight, it’ll be solely the Republicans’ fault.

    Nice essay about privilege. Really puts it in perspective. As a rabbit, I have certain privileges, such as hopping under the cops’ radar. I don’t get choked or shot for standing on a public sidewalk or sitting on a bench in a public park, if you know what I mean. As a capitalist, I have all sorts of privileges — I can take naps during the hours of 7 and 5, I don’t have to commute, I don’t have bosses yelling at me, I’m immune from downsizings and layoffs, and I don’t have to pay taxes on my capitalist income. Thanks, society! I try to repay society for all my privileges by being a responsible citizen, which among other things means voting in elections, and not voting for Republicans. That’s how I repay my fellow warm-blooded creatures for the advantages they’ve lavished on me.

    Roger Rabbit Commentary: I’m betting on a shutdown. After all, that’s what most Republicans want, so they can say Obama left our borders unguarded. There’s a threefer here: They also get to reduce the size of government, and they get lots of cheap immigrant labor.

    This was actually my favorite work of his. It wasn’t much at the time, but his voice really goes with the story. My Pop gave me this record when I was 14, and I had read The Martian Chronicals several times already by that point and that recording of it sent chills down my spine it was so good.

    Nine states have privatized probation services for minor offenders and people pulled over for traffic infractions. (You get probation if you can’t pay the fine on your court day; and if you still don’t pay, you go to debtor’s prison.) That system is utterly corrupt, pervasively racist, and unconstitutional — but this is, after all, the Deep South.

    Democrats Save Republicans From DHS Shutdown

    Nancy Pelosi and her House Democratic caucus bailed out GOP Speaker John Boehner tonight by supporting a last-minute 1-week extension of DHS funding that passed the House on a 357-60 vote. Boehner didn’t have enough Republican votes to pass the measure because of Tea Party congressmen who would rather shut down the nation’s homeland security agencies to make an empty gesture about immigration. The extension gives House Republicans another week to decide to pass a “clean” DHS funding bill with no riders nullifying President Obama’s executive orders on immigration, because there’s not a chance in hell that a bill with such riders will get past Senate Democrats or the president’s veto. The Senate, in a bipartisan vote, has already supported a clean bill, so this battle is being fought entirely in the House within Boehner’s out-of-control caucus.
