@24 Puddy will really get off on this:
One of the arguments warmongers gave for overthrowing Saddam Hussein was that his regime was responsible for the violent deaths of some 300,000 civilians between 1968 and 2003. That estimate now appears exaggerated, since the number of bodies in mass graves has not borne it out. But what is tragic is that in 4 1/2 short years, a foreign military occupation has unleashed killing on a scale achieved by the murderous Saddam Hussein regime only over decades. Bush did not kill all those people directly, of course, but he did indirectly cause them to be killed, since these are excess deaths beyond what you would have expected if there had been no invasion and occupation.
I am often struck by how clueless the American public is to the vast destruction we have wrought on Iraq and its people, directly or indirectly. It strikes me as a bitter joke that 4 million are displaced, often facing hunger and disease, and the rightwing periodicals and presidential candidates are talking about how the “surge” has “turned things around.” For whom? How many orphans have we created? How many widows? How many people who weep and cry every night while trying to fall asleep on straw mats? I estimate on the basis of a UN study of refugees in Syria that as many as 600,000 or 700,000 Baghdadis were ethnically cleansed from the capital under the nose of the American troops implementing the surge.
Here is the Seattle Times report from 2001 on the accident the video covers.
Politician, bus driver: 2 versions collide (Seattle Times 2001)
By Caitlin Cleary
Seattle Times staff reporter
Nearly two months after Metropolitan King County Councilwoman Jane Hague collided with a Metro bus while driving in downtown Seattle, contrasting stories have cropped up.
Witnesses say Hague ran a red light without looking for or yielding to oncoming traffic, crashing into the side of a Metro bus.
The bus driver reported Hague was reluctant to give information to him and pulled rank with him and the other witnesses, accusing them of ganging up on her.
Hague, R-Bellevue, denies their version of events, and questions the timing and release of such information to the press.
According to the Metro accident report of May 29, the bus was running the outbound 66 route, driving east on Olive Way. Hague’s 1996 Ford Explorer was stopped in the crosswalk of a traffic signal at Fourth Avenue. Witnesses say Hague pulled out quickly to make a right turn onto Olive and drove into the right side of the bus, behind the front-door frame. The driver reported sounding his horn and stepping on the brakes before impact.
“I do not agree with the driver’s account,” Hague said yesterday. “This is not unusual in the case of a traffic accident.”
According to the Metro driver’s report, after the accident Hague said to him, “You know it’s your fault, don’t you?” The driver replied, “No, I don’t see it that way.”
The driver reported Hague asking, “How do you see it?” and then informing him of her position, saying, “Do you know that I’m your King County councilwoman?”
The driver said Hague demanded his license but didn’t want to give him hers. When witnesses stepped forward and corroborated the driver’s version of events, Hague protested that she was being ganged up on, “to make sure that this accident would appear to be my fault.”
Hague said yesterday her statements to the driver after the accident had been mischaracterized. She denied she had tried to intimidate him or transit officials who came shortly after.
Hague, who is running for re-election, called it “highly unusual” to see “such explicit personality issues raised in the course of a pro-forma traffic report.
“I find it interesting that misinformation regarding this accident was proactively transmitted to several members of the media over the last two weeks. As this event occurred almost two months ago, I must question the motives and timing of this story.”
The left front fender, headlight and bumper of Hague’s vehicle were damaged.
She said she had shoulder pain but declined medical attention. There was no police investigation into the accident.

We’re Liberating Them. They’re so Grateful. Winning Hearts and Minds”). Is there anyone who could make a list of all of the pros and cons from our invasion of Iraq and — while including the hundreds of thousands of innocent dead human beings and the 4 million who are displaced — argue that it was worth it? What kind of moral depravity would allow that argument to be made?”

“Let’s put it in perspective. We have five small speedboats attacking the U.S. Navy with a Destroyer? They could take care of those speedboats in about five seconds. And here we’re ready to start World War III over this? . . . . You know there are people in this administration and in Washington, D.C., that are looking for the chance” to bomb Iran, the 10-term Texas congressman said.
“I’m worrying about the policy of why we’re looking for a justification . . . . I mean, we’re already, with our CIA, being involved in trying to overthrow that government, and we don’t need another war. And this incident should not be thrown out of proportion to the point where we’re getting ready to attack Iran over this,” Paul said.
Romney responded to that claim by saying, “I think Congressman Paul should not be reading as many of (Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad’s press releases.

The right to vote is the fundamental right that has been the source of the most significant Supreme Court litigation. The Constitution addresses voting in Article II and four subsequent amendments (the 15th, forbidding discrimination in voting on the basis “of race, color, or previous condition of servitude;” the 19th, forbidding discrimination in voting based on sex; the 24th, prohibiting “any poll tax” on a person before they can vote; and the 26th, granting the right to vote to all citizens over the age of 18). The Court has chosen to also strictly scrutinize restrictions on voting other than those specifically prohibited by the Constitution because, in its words, the right to vote “is preservative of other basic civil and political rights.” It should be noted, however, that “strict scutiny” in the fundamental rights cases tends to be, in actual practice a little less strict than in suspect classifications cases. The Court, for example, has upheld reasonable (e.g., 50-day) residency restrictions on voting and state laws denying the vote to convicted felons, as well as age and citizenship requirements.

So Daddy Love: Twin State Voting is a fundamental right?
Maybe that’s what the 40,000 snowbirds identified by the NY Daily News for 2004 POTUS election thought too.
36
Dean Logan Rides Againspews:
Fundamental is in the mind of the beholder. So is ‘undue.’ So is ‘burden.’ To repeat, Constitutional rights and constitutions are products of negotiation. Read about legislatures negotiating the suffrage amendment of 1919-1920: Went down to the wire in Tennessee with votes being traded for Tennessee mash.
The right to vote is so unfundamental that states and districts set rules (that may or may not be subject to the invented right of judicial review.) That’s why pro-Bush overseas military ballots in Florida/2000 were discarded: Florida had set rules about postmarks and date-of-receipt. Otherwise valid ballots were posted or received too late to be counted. Was a fundamental right abrogated for Floridians vacationing in Clinton’s Kosovo? Was a postmark an undue burden?
Or how about this? Have heard that some municipalities in some elections permit everybody and everybody’s dog to vote. Mere residency in a bounded district is the only requirement. Citizenship is not. If Indiana’s feeble attempt to ascertain citizenship is an ‘undue burden,’ as you assert, then maybe the Constitutional requirement of citizenship is also an undue burden.
In Maine, the Help Democrats Vote Act lets incarcerated felons vote. In our state there are a few hoops thru which released felons must crawl to regain their fundamental right to vote. Are our hoops undue burdens? Are the 49 states that attempt to cull dead voters and disfranchised felons from voter lists making undue burdens for the corpses who put LBJ in the Senate and JFK in the White House?

Glenn Greenwald asks:
“The reason we basically block out from our public discourse the effects our behavior has on innocent human beings — the reason, for instance, we don’t bother to count Iraqi victims and the reason we exempt our own behavior from any sort of scrutiny other than the most self-absorbed — is because that’s the only way that the propaganda can be sustained (“Freedom is on the March.
C’mon PuddyPud and The Piper argue that the war in Iraq is worth it.

Of the six candidates, only Ron Paul said he thought the incident was being blown out of proportion.

The comment is deleted because you forgot to close a bold tag. The spam filter software doesn’t allow me to edit comments before approving them, so I would have had to approve the comment, hunt it down, and then correct it (so that your comment doesn’t mess up the rest of the comment thread.)
BTW: It had nothing to do with the comment content…I didn’t even read it besides recognizing it as a real comment (there were over 100 spams I was scanning through at the time). And it wasn’t about you…SeattleJew lost a comment for the same reason yesterday—he left an italics tag unclosed.

Puddy considering the insane stuff you post on this site it should be clear to you that you are not censored. I often wonder why you don’t post on rightwing suites but apparently that wouldn’t meet your emotional needs. At any rate: Hey Hey Puddy! How many people will your President torture today? Hey hey Puddy how many babies will your President kill today? He dropped 40,000 pounds of bombs on the good citizens of Iraq yesterday. Think Puddy THINK! If this was happening in your neighborhood would you feel grateful?

So Daddy Love: Twin State Voting is a fundamental right?
Maybe that’s what the 40,000 snowbirds identified by the NY Daily News for 2004 POTUS election thought too.
