    The Port of Olympia is back in the import business, bringing a product to the marine terminal that arrives in 11/2-ton “super sacks,” is dumped into enclosed rail cars and then travels 900 miles to the northwest corner of North Dakota, where it plays a role in an economic oil boom reminiscent of Alaska in the 1970s.

    The new cargo represents $1.5 million in annual revenue for the port.

    The product, manufactured in China, is called ceramic proppants – grains of sand with a hint of alumina that are coated with ceramics. The proppants are used in an oil exploration process known as hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” that literally props up the weight of the earth so that oil, deep underground, can be released.

    For some, fracking is a controversial process, prone to contaminate groundwater, while others say fracking takes place at such deep levels underground that there is no threat to groundwater. Others, too, say the fracking process in North Dakota is closely regulated and means jobs and growth, as well as jobs in Olympia.

    The reason recent growth of food stamp reliance has increased more in GOP-heavy areas, YLB, is that food stamp reliance has been so heavy for so long in Dem-heavy areas that it’s hard to detect any further use of them in those areas.

    Food stamps are a new thing to a lot of Republicans, you’re right. They’d rather have jobs.

    In this map from 2009, the rural areas and the south, where most food stamps were used. Notice that the food stamp use is generally LESS in the liberal urban areas that have not been destroy by republican economics. Check out Portland and Seattle. Much less use than the south.

    If the poor are uplifted even just slightly then they become tax payers rather than living off food stamps. Republicans are angry about food stamp usage because they have failed to uplift the poor in their states. The top down, trickle down, economic approach has broken social mobility in Republican led states. Republicans are angry because their failed economic approach leaves them with fewer tax payers and more people on welfare.

    Con policies are not working, so instead of changing the policies, Cons punish the people who now need help from the policies that screwed them.

    I knock on the door and introduce myself as Mike a volunteer for the Obama campaign. Surprisingly Jill, a white woman who looks to be in her 50s, asks me to come in. I do.

    I notice immediately that Jill seems a tad emotional. She tells me that she voted for Obama in 2008 and intended to vote for him in 2012, but that she’s a Christian and 2 weeks ago her church told her not to vote for Obama.

    She told me that her church told her she could not vote for Obama because he is for abortion and he is for the gays. She said she didn’t know what to do, or how to vote.

    Florida is about the only state where Obama lost ground, while he surged in Wisconsin. Everywhere else, the movement was incremental, and mostly in the president’s direction. And note—Obama’s deficit in Florida and North Carolina is smaller than the deficit in any of these other battleground states. And with undecideds breaking to Obama, Romney’s got zero room to grow.

    A drug-sniffing dog was called in, and indicated that there were possibly drugs in the front seat of the car. The deputy reported finding six amphetamine pills in a plastic cigarette wrapper in the woman’s purse. The woman said they belonged to her daughter.

    The woman was taken to the Utah County jail, and during a search was found to have a baggie containing what police said was cocaine in her mouth, as well as a 3.5-inch-long, 1-inch-diameter methamphetamine crystal in a body cavity. Based on the amount of drugs found, she was arrested on suspicion of possessing a distributable amount of methamphetamine in jail, a first-degree felony.

    You know, I’m just fine with whomever found that meth making a good wage and a union rep.
