Open Thread 2/11

– Less steaming, less flying, less training.

– Which isn’t to say that America hasn’t fallen into a culture of violence. Of course it has. But that culture has nothing to do with fantasy on the small screen or on the big screen. It has to do with reality.

– Apparently Fox News is less than honest sometimes.

– It’s nice to see former Boy Scouts returning their badges to protest the organization’s homophobia.

– I think the Pope saying he’ll resign is an early April Fool’s Day prank.

– Professor Droney

– Don’t curb our 2nd Amendment rights

Re: Scouts…..BSA is a private organization which has morphed from a broad-based community group to a recruiting tool for various sponsoring religions. In Las Vegas, from which I fled, almost 50% of the Cub and Boy Scout troops are sponsored by LDS Stakes. The Catholic Church sponsors a number as well. They are a private organization entitled to their own standards. I can’t see, however, why they should be eligible for tax-exempt status and use of public facilities.

Gee, that’s just how I feel about Moveon.org, People for the American Way, and the like.

    Trustworthy
    Loyal
    Helpful
    Friendly
    Courteous
    Kind

    … (three I can’t remember – Thrifty, perhaps?)

    Brave
    Clean
    Reverent

That’s from the early 70s. Reverent was probably part of those 12 things well before that.

I’d argue that it’s society that has ‘morphed’, and Scouting is adhering to principle.

Hows about an actual full post and discussion about targeted assassinations of American citizens without due process, rather, than just a link to a cartoon?

DOJ kill list memo forces many Dems out of the closet as overtly unprincipled hacks

Or would that be a little too uncomfortable?

Personally, I’m OK with it. It’s one of the things I expect a president to do, quietly, and preferably without press oversight. (I want him on that wall. I need him on that wall.)

I just wish the playing field were level. Tina Brown makes an excellent point. When Bush was president we had NYT exposing SWIFT. Now that Obama is president, we have the media keeping its mouth shut if requested to do so by the White House.

Kudos to Greenwald for sticking to his principles.

Would you be so coy after posting a description of what all of those bullets did to the little children of Newtown?

A friend of mine was murdered last summer, Bob, the last of five victims of the Capital Hill murderer, shot in the head point blank by a mad man with a gun. Would you care to post a description of what that bullet did to her and make a crack about it?

It’s always fun watching people complain about the libr’l media.

It’s not as if the story wasn’t broken by NBC and then commented negatively upon by a whole slew of “commie” MSNBC hosts. Clearly left media types are silent the troubling notion that citizens can be killed without trial and there;s no chance any libr’l media printed op-eds that such a thing might be necessary under a different administration…

I mean, for your outraged comparison to be even slightly reasonable, not a single liberal news outlet or blog could have been critical of the killing of al-Alwaki at the time. I’ll let you google that yourself, the results are in the millions.

And while twisting your fake outrage, how does impeachment work? Which party controls the chamber that would need to pass a bill to impeach? What was your point?

No interest in deleting my post, Steve. I’m sorry about your friend’s death, but I have little patience for your conflation of my response to killing of a guy who was supremely responsible for thousands of deaths, just in this country, with what my response should be to the killing of someone you knew. Suppose I had called out the celebration on HA of Andrew Breitbart’s death because I know someone who died of a sudden heart attack, too. Would that have made any sense? What would have been the response of HA libbies had I done so?

There was a fair amount of snark about the manner of the death of American Sniper a week ago, on HA. All’s fair on the Internet, Steve.

But I don’t think this empty suit will do anything like that. He doesn’t have the balls. I think he’ll sit there quietly and frown and not applaud and that’ll be it. Remember this is a guy who, in his prime, dodged the draft. He’s not exactly an Alexander the Great or a Tamerlane or a Pershing. I’d argue that it’s society that has ‘morphed’, and Scouting is adhering to principle.

There was an interesting program on the BSA and its early years. It aired around the same time the BSA was winning its right to be bigoted in the courts.

The BSA was founded to be an all inclusive group and intended to serve all boys. The organization was never intended to deny membership due to skin color, religious affiliation or sexual orientation. It was not founded to be a haven of bigots as Dr Scrooge seems to think.

The grandson of the BSA was interviewed for the program. He said his grandfather had tried to resist the religious bigots who had managed to take over the leadership of the organization in later years. He unfortunately failed.

    MikeBoyScout spews:

    Monday, 2/11/13 at 7:05 pm

    @40 Ekim,
My moniker says something about the BSA. :-)

The “problem” with today’s BSA is that the practices and principles of the organization have been hijacked by the “religious” sponsors.

I don’t know, because I never asked, but I’m sure an average proportion of my fellow Scouts when I was a boy were homosexual.
Maybe there were parents who were gay.
It never made a difference about what we did and how we did it.

To preserve the intent of Robert Baden-Powell and the honorable traditions of the BSA, it needs to cut the umbilical cord of bigoted religious sponsorship.

ps. The Presbyterian church which sponsored my troop went thru a 3 year struggle with homosexuality, and ultimately, split with its hierarchy and saw the light. We can and will do this, but we need to confront bigotry straight on.

pps. One of my friends and fellow Scout in my Troop was (is?) an Astronaught, having Commanded 2 Space Shuttle Missions.

    ppps. The Serial Reneger never would have lasted in my Troop. We had no tolerance for slacking, lazy losers;
    “do my duty”.

But apparently all the attention has caused the NRA to delete the page and now it gives a 404. MSNBC managed to find a test page on the NRA web site with more or less the same content.

    http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/02/11.....ll-exists/

Then there is the “Wayback Machine,” AKA the Internet Archive. Great for looking at previous versions of scrubbed web pages. I did a quick search and turned up the Jan 20 version of the (now) 404 page.

@40 He’s right, society has morphed; we don’t allow people to own other human beings anymore, and women can vote now. Maybe it’s time for the Boy Scouts to re-examine how they’ve been applying the principles and ideals they teach, and whether there might be better and more inclusive ways of upholding them. There’s nothing wrong with BSA’s principles and ideals in and of themselves, and never was.

@45, The point I was making was that Scouting was not adhering to its founding principles. Kinda like how the Republican Party of old got hijacked and turned into The Party Of God(tm) AKA Teahadists.

You know, considering my candidate lost the election, I don’t feel all that badly about it.

Tonite, I hear, Apple Computer’s CEO is sitting next to Michelle at SOTU. Apple is sitting on $137M in cash.

Overtaxed secretaries were so last year.

Hell, Democrats to the right of Dennis Department of Peace Kucinich back drone strikes:

Support for drone attacks crosses party lines: 68% of Republicans and 58% of Democrats say they approve of U.S. drone strikes.

    Exit question: Only 68%, GOP?

    $137B.

“Overtaxed secretaries were so last year.”

No, it was the undertaxed Galtain Lords that was “so last year”. You lost that one. Remember? Note this year’s guest list. This year were taking away guns. Please do try to keep up, Bob.
