Arena concessionaire Levy Restaurants debuted two DraftServ machines at Saturday’s game, which the Bulls won by double digits.

Customers tap the machine with their card to start pouring for 20 seconds, or until the card runs out of money, whichever takes longer. There is no limit on total service per game, but customers can only pour 40 ounces every 10 minutes. Fans at Saturday’s game seemed to serve themselves with little difficulty.
Levy is introducing the machines on a trial run this postseason, but one can imagine the concessionaire would like DraftServ to catch on among United Center guests so the company can install more and cut costs.
One veteran server at the United Center later Saturday shared the suspicion.

What happens if a cyclist runs a “dead” red light and gets hit by a car proceeding on a green light? Does the driver have to pay? As a lawyer, I would argue the cyclist was in the wrong because the “dead red” law isn’t a blanket permission to run red lights, it only says he can go if it’s safe to do so.
And while I understand the reason for this law, does anyone really think aggressive cyclists aren’t going to exploit it to routinely run red lights and cut off cars proceeding on green? I will continue to honk and yell at those jerks.

Republicans have to defend twice as many Senate seats as Democrats. And the Supreme Court just threw out North Carolina’s gerrymandered redistricting. It’s shaping up as a tough election cycle for the Caveman Party.

Things aren’t looking good for the Baltimore cops who killed a black man last week by wringing his neck in the paddy wagon. Another video by a witness has surfaced. Freddie Gray, who had done nothing wrong, was stopped for making eye contact with a street cop in a bad neighborhood (of the sort where poor black people are forced to live). The official police report claims he was arrested “without force” but the original video of the incident shows an injured Gray being dragged to the paddy wagon. Once inside the wagon, the cops claim he became “irate.” Well, why wouldn’t an innocent man dragged off the street by racist bully cops be irate? Wouldn’t you be? The new video that surfaced today goes a long way toward solving the “mystery” of what happened between a healthy Gray’s arrest and a dying Gray’s ambulance ride from the police stationhouse to the hospital where he passed away a week later. This video shows the paddy wagon stopped a block away from the arrest scene, and there the cops dragged him out of the wagon, ostensibly to put leg irons on him. Even though it’s not explicit on the new video, it’s now obvious what must have happened: A burly cop physically dragged Gray out of the paddy wagon with a beefy arm around Gray’s neck, breaking his neck as he was forcibly yanked out of the paddy wagon. This incident can’t rightly be called anything but murder.
Oops, my stocks are up $2,675 now, or 22.3 times Seattle’s future minimum wage, assuming a standard 8-hour work day. What do those concession workers described in Bob’s post @1 make? A little research says $8.25/hr., but Chicago like Seattle has adopted a city minimum wage ordinance — theirs phases in $13/hr. by 2019. So, based on $8.25/hr., I’m “worth” 40.4 times as much as those concession workers, even though I’m sitting on my ass posting on HA and not producing a damn thing of any economic value. Oh well, that’s capitalism, which I guess is the best system there is until someone dreams up a better one.

The article linked above has photos of management using soldiers’ guns to keep workers’ wages aligned with what their work is “worth” by the employer’s reckoning. Under a system like this, you’re better off being a capitalist than a worker.
It’s okay with me if I’m replaced by a vending machine that spits out a plastic card that people can use to pay for an $8.50 beer. I’ll just own the stock of the company that owns the vending machine, and I’ll do fine. I won’t even have to restock the machines with plastic cards. That’ll be done by some schmuck being paid $8.25/hr., and if he doesn’t like the work or pay, he can be replaced by a robot, too. According to Bob, at least. But where is Bob going to find robots to buy $8.50 beers?
If employers won’t give minimum wage worker a raise, then what if America’s minimum wage workers vote in politicians who will? And if employers replace those workers with robots, then what if those displaced workers vote in politicians who will tax rich bosses to pay for unemployment benefits and food stamps for displaced workers? That won’t be easy to avoid, because there’s more poor workers than rich bosses. What will Bob do then? Cry into his $8.50 beer? At some point, after you’ve confiscated other people’s labor too cheaply for too long, you’re bound to get confiscation in the other direction.

I own oil stocks, so I’m glad to see my neighbors trading in their electrics for gas guzzlers. It happens every time gas (temporarily) goes down a buck. The reason this works so well for me is because gas price declines are always temporary, whereas once you buy a gas guzzler, you’re stuck with it for years to come. Oh yeah, one more thing, these same people are selling their oil stocks real cheap right now because, you know, oil is (temporarily) cheap. I own auto stock, too, so I get to sell them an expensive SUV and then sell them expensive gas and collect the dividends from the oil stock they gave to me cheap.

I’m not to sure I can be replaced by a machine. Maybe someone that wants to work harder than I for less I suppose. Ever since relocating to NYC, for the company I work for, I’ve put together over 60 proposal schedules in, that’s more than 1 every week, they aren’t the hardest thing to do, but by comparison, I’d only done about 6 per year at my old office, same company. I heard Medved claiming that only red states are doing well and millions of people are leaving California due to high taxes and Scott Walker is the best presidential candidate because he has turned Wisconsin around.
California’s population is up over 4% since 2010. Was he intentionally lying or makin’ shit up that he heard somewhere.
Wisconsin entered 2011 18th in the nation on Job growth when Walker was elected. Wisconsin is presently 40th. Scott Walker has announced that he will not make debt payments due to huge shortfall in Wisconsin’s budget so he’s right with the rest of the GOP on phony deficit reduction. Oh, and Wisconsin has a projected two year deficit of over $2 Billion dollars and won’t get through the end of the year without coming up with an additional $280million on top of the debt payments he’s borrowing to make his budget work. But hey, Walker cut taxes.
So when a radio host says Walker turned Wisconsin around…is he ill-informed or lying?

Those systems exist in bars. They have their place but they won’t make major inroads. One place I know that implemented them with great fanfare in the Los Angeles area already went to the grave.
Plus, you can pour yourself a few ounces of an unkown beer and it charges by what you poured. Minus, reputable beer bars will already do this for you for free and then you order a full one if you like it.
Plus, you can have four ounces of four different beers for basically the same price as a pint. Minus, most breweries do sample sets in the same way.
The biggenst minus is it relies on the customer to know what they want. How many ads have you heard lifetime about wine label intimidation and lack of consumer knowlegde. BevMo runs their entire marketing behind this notion that you need expert help.
I’m an outlier, I brew, I read beer blogs, if going on a business trip I spend some time seeing if a cult beer from the region is on tap somewhere that is realistic for me to get while I’m there. The bigger the “get” as far as rarity and general good recommendation of the beer nerds the more effort I’ll put in. I am in the geeky 1% of beer snobs.
Most people need someone like me behind the bar so if their regular is Anchor Porter and there are no porters on. “What might I like?” The machine can’t answer and can’t pour you a free taste of it’s opinion.
You won’t see any of the top 500 beer bars in America messing around with these machines for those reasons. It is also illegal in many states and even more municipalities withn open states to let the customer pour from the taps.
And there’s the hitch, “Guests can buy $20 or $50 cards, whose values roll over from game to game but will expire after the Bulls’ and Blackhawks’ 2015 postseason runs.” So if you want A (one) beer and don’t regularly attend games this system is useless for you.

Spoke to a friend and coworker today, he called me. I’ve talked about him here before, he’s a staunch republican. We talked mostly about work, but the before saying goodbye he said he had one question for me. The question – What do I think about Hillary Clinton? I told him that shes better than anyone of the current republican candidates in the ring. He didn’t respond negatively, and then quickly asked what I thought about Carly Fiorini. I assume nothing. I believe in the fine art of craft cocktail creation. Higher-end bartenders are not at risk. Still amazed at that Greenwich Sour crafted for me at Sun Liquor a few months ago.
However, the employee who pulls the tap for a $9 beer at a game during which standing in line means less game watched is an employee at risk. There won’t be wholesale changes in how things are done. Not everyone wants to buy a $50 or even $20 card, as you pointed out above. For those people there will continue to be the person at the end of the line to serve and make change for your $10 or $20 bill. But for those who want to swipe a card, fill up or top off, and get back before the 7th Inning Stretch is over, whatever is fastest is probably most desirable.
Just like at Home Depot, where one can self-check or check through a cashier-manned stand, there will be multiple options as technology begins to replace more people. Four people at a time can use self-check and one employee seems to man that pretty well at the Home Depot I use. I typically self-check to avoid the line, if I can. Sometimes I need the checkstand, as when I’m buying pavers or something that isn’t easily scanned, and I’m aware of that ahead of time.
This won’t be a revolutionary shift in how automated transactions occur. It will be incremental. However, as technology continue to evolve, the employee at the opposite end of the spectrum from the Murray Stenson or cz bartender – the one who pulls the tap and does little or nothing else – that employee’s job is at risk because it’s a job that can be fairly straighforwardly replaced.
We all pump our own gas in WA state. Didn’t use to be that way. Most of the time we don’t need a cashier to do it. Didn’t use to be that way.

I have a friend s coworker who just moved from the northeast to florida. He got a great opportunity with the company we work for. And he was not happy either weather, and the high cost of living here in the northeast. His wife was a teacher. They just had s baby, only two months old. We have some interesting stock moves this morning. Amazon (which I don’t own) is up 15%, and Starbucks (which I own) is up 6.5%. In fact, Starbucks’ $3-plus move today is almost 3 times what I paid for my Starbucks stock. (I bought Starbucks in 1996 for $1.06 a share, adjusted for splits.)
We live in a country where half the people (i.e., Republicans) go nuts if someone suggests that a barista who gets up at 5 a.m., opens a coffee shop at 6:00 a.m. so commuters can get their joe fix, and works on her feet all day waiting on customers and cleaning up after them, should earn enough to get off food stamps. All so capitalists like me who make hundreds of dollars from their Starbucks stock without getting out of bed don’t have to pay an extra nickel for a latte.
I don’t understand this. I’m no socialist, despite what the morons who don’t know what the difference between a liberal and a socialist is, but I don’t get the slave-labor mentality of Republicans.
