From the Albany (Ga.) Herald, in regards to the “Proud Peanut Expo” being held in Blakely, Ga., home of the Peanut Corporation of America. Here’s a nice quote from a local Chamber spokesperson.
“Our purpose is to show peanut butter is trustworthy,” Halford said. “There is a lot of misleading information. The Peanut Corporation of America (in Blakely) was a very small drop in the bucket that seems to be spoiling a whole bunch. We don’t want to focus on the bad; we want to focus on the good.”
Well, at least “spoiling” is the correct word to use. I haven’t touched one bite of peanut butter or peanuts since this case broke, even though I have a nearly full jar of name brand peanut butter I had already made sandwiches from. Clearly it’s not contaminated. However, sitting down to lunch and thinking about salmonella is rather off-putting, to say the least.
The outrageous case of PCA should be a lesson to all industries. Consumers will steer clear of products in a certain category in the wake of mass injury, even products from reputable companies. Ask tomato growers. Or the beef industry. You’d think people would finally figure out that it’s in everyone’s interest to sanely and properly regulate consumer items. Until corporate America gets this message, it’s not only consumers who lose, it’s also businesses whose sales plummet in the wake of these incidents. The cost of sensible regulation is surely less than than the hundreds of millions in lost sales every time this happens.

If I’m not mistaken, industry originally accepted regulation as a means of giving consumers confidence in their food products following a rash of incidents like this one. The fact is, the Randian, after-the-fact means of dealing with food and product safety seriously endanger the industries they’re supposed to “liberate.” Because for every ten honest, scrupulous producers out there, there’s one Peanut Corp. of America doing its damndest to ruin consumer confidence in their products.
Contrary to the Objectivist / Libertarian way of thinking, government regulation often IS self interest at work…the enlightened kind.
John: Corporate Amerika is foused on short-term profits and the stockmarket. This should be obvious from the wreckage of the banking fiasco. Instead of focusing on long-term strategies to get a good long term yield, the banks took on risky investment strategies designed to make themselves look better in the short run. The results of this are the disaster we now have.
We cannot trust private industry to do the right thing. In matters of our food, our health and our money (banks) we need government oversight and regulation. Period.
Oooh, I just noticed the big “peanut butter testing” ad on this page. What a fantastic example of what the consumer has to do in Libertarian Paradise: individually test every food product consumed at a cost of $25 a pop!
This isn’t to poke fun at the advertiser…my guess is that it’s aimed at retailers who want to test a sample from a lot of product so they know its safe to sell…makes sense. But you, the consumer, won’t know whether your retailer has done the testing…they are in no way required to. So you better do it yourself…just to be safe.
We have bought no peanut products since the salmonella outbreak and I don’t think we will anytime soon. If the contaminated product hadn’t been purposefully sent out after it was found it was contaminated it would be a little easier to trust.
As it is, the business was able to ignore the inspections and place products out where they could interfere with the public health. Whoever made that decision is responsible for deaths and sickness and should be incarcerated.
#3 The point is…there are always going to be charlatans and crooks operating in a free market. The free market worshippers, however, believe this type will get weeded out by consumer choice, poor business performance and the courts. The fact is…this has never and will never be the case.
Just like drug dealers…there will always be another crook lurking around the corner. A robust consumer-based economy demands up-front consumer protections along with the forces found in a free market. If an industry can’t or won’t organize itself to provide those protections, the state has an interest in doing so.
As a retired health inspector, I was sad to see the peanut contamination. The real sad part of the situation is that this particular problem is relatively easy to prevent. Greed ! GREED !!!

Union wages are the foundation of small business prosperity. When businesses cut wages, workers have less money to spend, and sales drop. Why can’t Republican business owners figure this out?
We now live in an era of falling wages, yet food prices keep going up. What’s more, food processers are sneaky about it. They’re doing things like using the old 6.5-oz. tuna can but putting only 5 oz. of tuna in it, hoping consumers won’t notice. They also raised the price from 69 cents to 89 cents. This is a 68% price increase overnight! You can’t persuade me that costs have gone up that much — not much wages are falling. This is pure, unadulterated greed. But I wasn’t fooled, and I don’t buy their fucking tunafish anymore.
Yeah and you’ll notice they don’t call it a “1/2 pound double stack” on Wendy’s value menu any more…just a “double stack.” Since the price couldn’t go up and still be on the “value menu” they had to shrink the burger.
