The fairly extensive racist graffiti attack last weekend in Vancouver has prompted Aneurin to put up the PayPal button for donations to the account originally set up last year when the car of two Obama supporters was similarly defaced. The account is intended to help victims defray some of the costs of repairs and cleanup, although equally important is that the community send a message that this sort of stuff will not be met with silence.
It was heartening last year that several generous donations came from the Seattle area, that was greatly appreciated.
The Obama supporters’ car was repainted with some help from a very kind local body shop. It’s kind of hard to say how much can be done financially with the current incident, as it was far more widespread, involving multiple vehicles, homes and other property. Maybe some folks insurance deductibles could be met or something. Like it’s not hard enough in the economy right now, having some racist idiots spray painting stuff is maddening.
A 16 year old high school student who seemed to be one of the main targets of last weekend’s incident turns out to be a highly regarded basketball star at Fort Vancouver High School. She spoke to a Portland television station about the graffiti.
I’m optimistic that community leaders here in Clark County are concerned about this kind of stuff and are going to speak out about it. Placing plastic pelicans in someone’s lawn is a prank, spraying swastikas and hate messages, not so much.
Does anyone remember John asking for donations to the family of the Tubaman, or James Paroline? They were actually murdered.

Experts on Iran’s internal affairs agree across the board that President Obama has handled the turmoil in that country exactly right. The president has carefully measured his criticism of that country’s leaders in tandem with the regime’s escalation of its repression. To go whole hog out of the gate, as numerous stupid Republican politicians loudly demanded, would have played into the ayatollahs’ hands. This is one of many reasons why we, not them, should be running this country and its foreign policy.
The ultraconservative religious fanatics clinging to illegimate power in Iran are also flaunting their attitude toward dissent against their faith-based dictatorship:

I once co-owned a business with an ethically-challenged rightwing christofascist who responded to any questioning of his questionable business practices with, “God is telling me how to run this business, and if you question my decisions, you are blaspheming God and will go to Hell.” The only way to deal with people like that is to not deal with them. When it’s a business, you can walk away; when they get hold of an entire country, its people had better be armed.
That’s why I’ve been saying all along that liberals must arm. Don’t believe for one fucking minute that our own homegrown “Christian” (not) ayatollahs wouldn’t march us all into death camps if they got the chance. Now let’s talk about the Carr brothers, who serve as poster boys for rightwing ballyhooing about black-against-white hate crime.
The Carrs are black. Their crime began as a home invasion robbery. Choosing a house at random, they brutalized five white young people, four males and a female, by forcing them to strip naked subjecting to “various forms of sexual humiliation, including rape and sodomy” (Wikipedia), then drove them to ATMs and forced them to empty their bank accounts, then took them (still naked) to a snowy deserted field and shot them execution-style in their heads. Then they drove one of the victim’s vehicle over the bodies. Then they returned to the house and beat and stabbed the victims’ dog to death.
This wasn’t their only horrific crime. A few days before, they robbed a 23-year-old assistant basketball coach, and then shot and killed a 55-year-old cellist and librarian as she tried to escape from them.
These vermin deserve no mercy from anybody. Everyone agrees on that. At the time of the trial, rightwing loudmouths who didn’t know what they were talking about criticized the prosecutor for not charging the Carrs with a hate crime. The prosecutor responded that would have unnecessarily complicated the prosecution, created opportunities for the defense, and wasn’t needed to get the death penalty. The prosecutor was right and the rightwing critics were wrong; the jury returned guilty verdicts and death sentences against both brothers.
The Carrs’ death sentences were overturned when the Kansas Supreme Court subsequently ruled that state’s death penalty law unconstitutional, sparing all of that state’s death row inmates. For a while, it appeared the Carrs would get off with life-without-parole. However, the Kansas court’s decision was overturned by SCOTUS and the Carrs are back on death row, where they belong.
It’s actually hard to say whether the Carrs were motivated by racial hatred, or are merely sociopaths with an urge to brutalize and kill anyone they crossed paths with. So, the rightwing talking point — that authorities turn a blind eye to racial motivation when crimes are committed by blacks against whites — isn’t even necessarily valid in this case. But in any event, their main and specific criticism in this case is that the prosecutor didn’t charge the Carrs with a hate crime. That’s just plain stupid; doing so could have jeopardized the prosecution, and layering on “hate crime” charges in a death penalty case is pointless — how can you enhance a death sentence?
The Carr case serves as a poster for more than heinous crime. It’s also a poster for the sheer vapidity and shallowness of rightwing talking points. The brainlessness of these armchair quarterbacks is disheartening. They’re so stupid there’s no hope of reasoning with them.
That, in a word, is where we’re at with rightwingers generally: They’re hopeless. You can’t reason with them. They’re basket cases. There’s absolutely no hope of bringing them around with facts or reasoned argument, no hope they’ll ever be reasonable, no hope of getting even first-grade logical functioning from them. You have a better shot with a tree stump. They’re hopelessly, terminally stupid. Period.
Fortunately for the traumatized citizens of Wichita, they had a prosecutor who knew what she was doing and had the presence of mind to not listen to the rightwing know-nothing loudmouths who wanted to meddle in the prosecution of one of the most appalling crimes in the city’s history.

Crime coverage has always been sensationalized — because it sells papers and gets listeners, dope. And crime coverage is always dumbed down to the audience that laps up this kind of “news.” To point a particular finger, here locally KING 5 TV had decent (and reasonably objective) local news coverage when Dorothy Stimson owned the stationed but after Belo Corp. acquired it, it became nothing but a crime blotter.
