“Nobody’s coming to get us”

Courtesy of Crooks and Liars, a truly heart wrenching interview with Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard on Meet the Press. (Quicktime or WMP)

The prepared statement at the beginning is damning enough, but stick with it until the horrible, horrible end. And if you can’t get past the busy servers, here’s a transcript:

“The guy who runs this building I’m in, Emergency Management, he’s responsible for everything. His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home and every day she called him and said, “Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?” and he said, “Yeah, Mama, somebody’s coming to get you.” Somebody’s coming to get you on Tuesday. Somebody’s coming to get you on Wednesday. Somebody’s coming to get you on Thursday. Somebody’s coming to get you on Friday… and she drowned Friday night. She drowned Friday night! [Sobbing] Nobody’s coming to get us. Nobody’s coming to get us. The Secretary has promised. Everybody’s promised. They’ve had press conferences. I’m sick of the press conferences. For god’s sakes, just shut up and send us somebody.”

And when you’re done drying your eyes, wet them again with this clip of Sen. Mary Landreau threatening to punch President Bush… before she breaks down in tears herself. (Quicktime or WMP)

And when you are done shedding a crocodile tear for for this blog’s sudden bouts of gut wrenching cliche designed to compete in the liberal blogger’s top Bush Bashing honors, shed a tear for the Mayor and Governor of NOLA who are in full CYA mode since they could have used hundred of buses to evacutate people BEFORE the hurricane hit, saving many lives, but instead chose to ignore evacuation plans that many other southern cities use routinely.

Is this site about Seattle Area politics, or is it trying to jump the bandwagon of liberal hatred? You be the judge.

Can you honestly assert the federal government did a good job here? Let’s for the sake of arguement postulate the local response failed. Did the Fed’s step up? This site is about the issues of the moment. Is there one that is more important? Did the fereral government led by George W. Bush do its job?

    barbara taylor spews:

People like you, Rename this site to BushHatred, are what make former Republicans, now independents, seriously consider becoming Democrats just to distance ourselves from excuses for humanity like you. These people in New Orleans at every economic level are traumatized and deeply grieving, as most of this nation of decent people are grieving with them. In case you haven’t heard, thousands of real, breathing human beings have died, many needlessly, because some fools in Washington dawdle and brag on themselves while citizens die. And all you can do is ridicule a man’s deep grief, turn it into politics, and refer to crocodile tears?

Let me tell you, Mr. Know it All, I am a Southerner and I have lived in several major Southern cities, and I have yet to see one that comes close to having the resources and ability to move and house 100,000 people, many elderly and sick, others hospitalized, in a couple of days. The entire national government can’t do it, but you think a city of less than 500,000 can. What do you use for brains?

You’re worse than a moron. You sound like a completely inhuman, Nazi moron. I wish our country could rid itself of people like you.

Washington state opens doors to Katrina refugees

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The state of Washington is making plans to host up to 2,000 hurricane refugees, Gov. Christine Gregoire announced Sunday.

“We don’t know at this point how many people will be coming, but we are making plans based on an initial estimate of up to 2,000 people,” Gregoire said in a statement. “We don’t know the exact timing for their arrival, but expect it will be within the next few days.”

Assisting with the plan to host Hurricane Katrina refugees are state officials, representatives from the city of Seattle, King Pierce and Snohomish Counties, the American Red Cross and many other organizations.

The state of Washington is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide assistance including shelter, food and medicine to people displaced by the hurricane.

Yes, this is site that usually focuses primarily on local politics… and in fact I’ve been sitting on two juicy local political stories for the past few days. But they just seemed so trivial in light of the horror that was unfolding in New Orleans, and the utter incompetence and lack of compassion of the federal relief efforts.

Sure… I could be like Stefan, and focus laser-like on a failed election contest, dismissed with prejudice by the GOP’s hand picked judge. But then, like Stefan, I would become completely irrelevant. Instead, I choose to focus for a few days on a national tragedy in which perhaps 10,000 or more people are dead in one of our greatest cities.

But I’ll get back to dumping on local Republicans soon enough, don’t you worry.

I’m not, but since Stefan’s can’t be bothered with anything as trivial as facts, I have no choice but to humor him. Stefan was hired as a poll worker, which means Dean Logan … ahem, me … is his supervisor. Therefore, it’s my duty to check up on him periodically.

Let’s see. Stefan is bitching tonight about a misspelling in the Oath of Voter printed on the absentee ballot, to wit: “Perjury” is spelled “purjury.”

Interesting complaint, coming from a guy who can’t spell his own name right. So what do y’wanna do about it, Steffie babe? Throw ‘em all out and spend taxpayer money to reprint them? Ya, I thought so.

Hey Stefan, how’s your beer … er, legal fundraising going? Do you have $2.75 yet? When are we going to see you at Montlake Ale House? How much have you recovered from King County Records and Elections in public disclosure penalties to date? Are you above $0.00 yet? Hey Stefan, how come you never answer my questions?

You’ll never get such a recognition from Mark LeRedneck. He thinks “guvmint” is unremittingly evil and constantly complains about “guvmint” sticking its hand in his pocket. Mark LeRedneck is a champion of self-sufficiency and rugged individualism … you know, the kind of self-sufficient individualism currently being exercised by the armed gangs roaming what’s left of New Orleans looking for people to kill and property to steal.

I have an idea — let’s take up a collection to buy Mark LeRedneck a one-way bus ticket to NOLA. It’s just the kind of place he’s always dreamed of living in. No government, no rules, no taxes.

What plan did St. Bernard Parish and the State of Louisiana have to evacuate the nursing homes in case of this VERY PREDICTABLE huricane. That is, everyone with half a brain KNEW Katrina would happen some day. In fact, they were lucky that they, the governments of Louisiana, had DAYS of warning in order to evacuate the elderly and infirm.

Were they expecting the the federal government to be their first responders? FEMA to prepare their evacuation plan?

As far as I can tell, the governments of Louisiana are right up to third world standards. What an embarrassment!

Why is it that Houston can host 25,000 refugees in the Astrodome with food, water, toilets, cots and SHOWERS! And New Orleans had made NO similar preparations to use the Superdome.

The morons are people like you who want to make excuses for the GROSS INCOMPETENCE of the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana. And I am not sure that the governments in Mississippi and Alabama are very far behind.

It appears that the old saying that half of Louisiana is covered in water and the other half in graft and corruption are more true than not.

This is just too fishy. I know this has been a horrible experience for all involved and I’ve made considerable contributiions to organizations I trust to help. But, this sounds like a Larry King story all the way and if it is disproven, we will never hear it getting this type of coverage.

Lefties have again reverted to the “anybody who posts comments disagreeable to me is a nazi, etc.” mode. When will you losers wake up and get a life? Seriously tell me there are “nazis” in our midst you ….ing idiots!

You see we are Christians. Do unto others as we would have them do unto you. We would rather send the money to NO than spend it on ourselves with people hurting there. How about some lefties putting their muscles and $$$ where their keyboards are? Or spending their own money instead of tiefing someone elses? I have been to New Orleans. It is a dirt poor place. The infrastructure is in bad shape, the schools are falling apart, but I guess the taxes are low. Louisiana as a whole does not have a lot of money. This is probably part of the problem here.

But to defend the Federal response by simply blaming the local and state officials is asinine. No one did a good job here. This is about people’s lives, not partisan politics.

The Culture of Blame—on assigning blame for Hurricane Katrina:

“Let me make this clear: Everything which has happened as the result of Hurricane Katrina is my fault.

    No one else’s.
Stop wasting energy pointing fingers and put your hands to work helping out.
    It was me.
    Got it?

I was a United States Senator from Louisiana in 2001 when the levee at Lake Pontchartrain was declared unsafe and I didn’t have enough clout with my Senatorial brethren to get sufficient money appropriated to fix it. It was my fault.

    I almost forgot.

I was the Commander-in-Chief of all United States Armed Forces in the 1960s which includes the Corps of Engineers. The cost-benefit analysis?
    My fault.

It is my fault that, as the Governor of Louisiana, I didn’t foresee the need to have enough Louisiana National Guard troops—the vast majority of whom are NOT currently in Iraq, or Afghanistan or, for that matter, Indiana—pre-positioned and ready to preserve order. I, frankly, forgot that there is a portion of the population which will steal anything from anyone given any opportunity and then will blame it on me because I didn’t—in spite of ample warnings by sociologists from large Eastern Universities—foresee the need to have 27″ flat-screen television sets available to every family in the New Orleans city limits as soon as the electricity went out.
    That one WAS my bad.

It is my fault that, as Mayor of New Orleans, I was boogying down Bourbon Street the night before the hurricane hit rather than being where I should have been—on the roof of the Superdome pounding in extra nails to hold the roof on.

As the architect of the Superdome, it was my fault for claiming
that the Dome could survive 200 mile-per-hour winds. It couldn’t
even handle a relatively gentle 160 mile-per-hour zephyr.
Strap me to my drafting table and set me adrift.

Global warming? My fault. Despite the fact that nearly every serious climatologist in America has stated over and over again that there is no clear evidence tying human-generated greenhouse gasses to global warming, and even if there were, there is no evidence tying global warming to hurricanes in the Atlantic basin, I was opposed to the Kyoto treaty and so it is my fault.

It is also my fault that during the administration of Bill Clinton the U.S. Senate rejected the terms of the Kyoto protocols by a vote of 95-0.
That would be zero, zilch, nada, nil, bupkis.

As the Grand Poohbah in Charge of all TV Coverage, it is my fault that there is constant video of looters and almost none of humanitarian activities. I am the person who issued the statement: ‘No more rescue footage UNLESS the person rescued complains about how long they had to wait or, if he shoots at the rescuers.’

And, finally, as Chairman of the National Association of Gasoline Producers it is my fault that I had the bad judgment to put so much of my drilling, refining and transportation assets in a hurricane-prone area like the Caribbean basin. What…was…I…thinking? If I could re-do that whole thing, I would have put all that equipment in Lake Erie and Lake Michigan. There may not be any oil there, but hurricanes are very rare.

    There you have it.
Everything that has happened is my fault.

Shut up and help.” —Rich Galen, “The Federalist Patriot (FederalistPatriot.US)”

But your larger point is a fair one. President Bush announced a “no tolerance” policy with respect to “looting.” Scott McClellan was asked if any provision was made for people taking food and water to avoid dying, and McClellan coldly said they should wait for the authorized relief supplies to arrive. People who took the initiative in surviving, when that meant stealing, ran a risk of prosecution or worse (an overzealous guardsman, for instance – unlikely, but possible).

That’s similar to a point I’ve made many times in private. It seems to me that many right-wing Christians have a very twisted view of Christ. They seem to see only Christ at his angriest – throwing the money-changers from the temple – while disregarding much of the rest of the New Testament, which tends to focus on that crazy liberal stuff like clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, etc.

It really is too bad there are so many “cafeteria Christians” on this board and in right-wing politics generally.

    torrid joe Re: 96

I’ll give ya credit on that. I see a formal request was made on the 26th prior to the executive order being issued on the 27th. ( http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=18447 )

But, that seems to compound the fatal inaction of the Governor and Mayor in not following their own emergency action plan. FEMA, not a first responder as much as a remediation force, that is the local government’s responsibility. FEMA is not expected to send people in harm’s way to risk their lives battling the elements and those who refuse to obey evac orders or those who were stranded by the Mayor’s incompetence in not using the 571 busses at his disposal to evacuate people. That incompetence, BTW, has now resulted in those busses being ruined in the flood and needing to be rebuilt or replaced.

Like I said; I hope the sniping subsides at some point soon and valuable lessons can be learned beyond trying to “blame somebody”.

    Baynative spews:

    joe –

“Behind the scenes, a power struggle emerged, as federal officials tried to wrest authority from Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D). Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source within the state’s emergency operations center said Saturday.

The administration sought unified control over all local police and state National Guard units reporting to the governor. Louisiana officials rejected the request after talks throughout the night, concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law. Some officials in the state suspected a political motive behind the request. “Quite frankly, if they’d been able to pull off taking it away from the locals, they then could have blamed everything on the locals,” said the source, who does not have the authority to speak publicly.”

In other words; the Governor chose to play politics with her own constituents for fear of being shown in an unfavorable light – which is how it’s ended up anyway.
