Washington state opens doors to Katrina refugees
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
OLYMPIA, Wash. — The state of Washington is making plans to host up to 2,000 hurricane refugees, Gov. Christine Gregoire announced Sunday.
“We don’t know at this point how many people will be coming, but we are making plans based on an initial estimate of up to 2,000 people,” Gregoire said in a statement. “We don’t know the exact timing for their arrival, but expect it will be within the next few days.”
Assisting with the plan to host Hurricane Katrina refugees are state officials, representatives from the city of Seattle, King Pierce and Snohomish Counties, the American Red Cross and many other organizations.
The state of Washington is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide assistance including shelter, food and medicine to people displaced by the hurricane.

Admitedly a minor example, but when the Nisqually quake hit, I was at the King County emergency ops center. I and many others went to the EOC rather than our families. The people there were all long term county employees. We did not work in our assigned areas. We did what was needed, but because of our tenure, we knew other agencies and their key staff. (For you anti-Sims trolls, we were all there before him, and most of us will be there after him) YOU NEED A PROFESSIONAL GOVERNMENT. The last I heard, thousands of people were at the convention centre in New Orleans, shipped over from the superdome, but they have bee left alone there, with no food or water, no police or Guard anywhere. Does anybody know if they are still abandoned?
What plan did St. Bernard Parish and the State of Louisiana have to evacuate the nursing homes in case of this VERY PREDICTABLE huricane. That is, everyone with half a brain KNEW Katrina would happen some day. In fact, they were lucky that they, the governments of Louisiana, had DAYS of warning in order to evacuate the elderly and infirm.
Were they expecting the the federal government to be their first responders? FEMA to prepare their evacuation plan?
As far as I can tell, the governments of Louisiana are right up to third world standards. What an embarrassment!

I have been to New Orleans. It is a dirt poor place. The infrastructure is in bad shape, the schools are falling apart, but I guess the taxes are low. Louisiana as a whole does not have a lot of money. This is probably part of the problem here.
But to defend the Federal response by simply blaming the local and state officials is asinine. No one did a good job here. This is about people’s lives, not partisan politics.

It is my fault that, as the Governor of Louisiana, I didn’t foresee the need to have enough Louisiana National Guard troops—the vast majority of whom are NOT currently in Iraq, or Afghanistan or, for that matter, Indiana—pre-positioned and ready to preserve order. I, frankly, forgot that there is a portion of the population which will steal anything from anyone given any opportunity and then will blame it on me because I didn’t—in spite of ample warnings by sociologists from large Eastern Universities—foresee the need to have 27” flat-screen television sets available to every family in the New Orleans city limits as soon as the electricity went out.
That one WAS my bad.
It is my fault that, as Mayor of New Orleans, I was boogying down Bourbon Street the night before the hurricane hit rather than being where I should have been—on the roof of the Superdome pounding in extra nails to hold the roof on.
As the architect of the Superdome, it was my fault for claiming
that the Dome could survive 200 mile-per-hour winds. It couldn’t
even handle a relatively gentle 160 mile-per-hour zephyr.
Strap me to my drafting table and set me adrift.
Global warming? My fault. Despite the fact that nearly every serious climatologist in America has stated over and over again that there is no clear evidence tying human-generated greenhouse gasses to global warming, and even if there were, there is no evidence tying global warming to hurricanes in the Atlantic basin, I was opposed to the Kyoto treaty and so it is my fault.
It is also my fault that during the administration of Bill Clinton the U.S. Senate rejected the terms of the Kyoto protocols by a vote of 95-0.
That would be zero, zilch, nada, nil, bupkis.
As the Grand Poohbah in Charge of all TV Coverage, it is my fault that there is constant video of looters and almost none of humanitarian activities. I am the person who issued the statement: ‘No more rescue footage UNLESS the person rescued complains about how long they had to wait or, if he shoots at the rescuers.’
And, finally, as Chairman of the National Association of Gasoline Producers it is my fault that I had the bad judgment to put so much of my drilling, refining and transportation assets in a hurricane-prone area like the Caribbean basin. What…was…I…thinking? If I could re-do that whole thing, I would have put all that equipment in Lake Erie and Lake Michigan. There may not be any oil there, but hurricanes are very rare.

Actually, I don’t think they arrested him; they just threatened to do it. I may be mistaken, but I think his jeopardy ended when the story hit the wires and people saw how heroically he had behaved. Anyone who charges that kid with a crime will be in a world of political trouble.
But your larger point is a fair one. President Bush announced a “no tolerance” policy with respect to “looting.” Scott McClellan was asked if any provision was made for people taking food and water to avoid dying, and McClellan coldly said they should wait for the authorized relief supplies to arrive. People who took the initiative in surviving, when that meant stealing, ran a risk of prosecution or worse (an overzealous guardsman, for instance – unlikely, but possible).

That’s similar to a point I’ve made many times in private. It seems to me that many right-wing Christians have a very twisted view of Christ. They seem to see only Christ at his angriest – throwing the money-changers from the temple – while disregarding much of the rest of the New Testament, which tends to focus on that crazy liberal stuff like clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, etc.

I’ll give ya credit on that. I see a formal request was made on the 26th prior to the executive order being issued on the 27th. ( http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=18447 )
But, that seems to compound the fatal inaction of the Governor and Mayor in not following their own emergency action plan. FEMA, not a first responder as much as a remediation force, that is the local government’s responsibility. FEMA is not expected to send people in harm’s way to risk their lives battling the elements and those who refuse to obey evac orders or those who were stranded by the Mayor’s incompetence in not using the 571 busses at his disposal to evacuate people. That incompetence, BTW, has now resulted in those busses being ruined in the flood and needing to be rebuilt or replaced.
Like I said; I hope the sniping subsides at some point soon and valuable lessons can be learned beyond trying to “blame somebody”.
