New poll: most voters not stupid, but think most other voters are

From the latest NY Times/CBS News poll:

A majority of American voters say that the furor over the relationship between Senator Barack Obama and his former pastor has not affected their opinion of Mr. Obama, but a substantial number say that it could influence voters this fall should he be the Democratic presidential nominee, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

So the media’s incessant focus on Rev. Wright hasn’t changed voters’ opinion of Obama, merely their opinion of other people’s opinion. That must be very disappointing for the talking heads.

At the same time, an overwhelming majority of voters said candidates calling for the suspension of the federal gasoline tax this summer were acting to help themselves politically, rather than to help ordinary Americans.

Which I suppose in the eyes of Hillary Clinton makes the overwhelming majority of voters “elitists.”

Sounds like the average voter is pretty smart to me!

    Good night.

  2. 2

    Let’s hope.

I watched Clinton on O’Reilly and came away with a restored belief that she is smart enough to be President, maybe ot be a great President.

How can I reconcile that with her apparent absence of a sense of ethics? She and Billy O got along all to well. Maybe .. if she gets to be President, he can apply as her Press Secretary? Watching the toe of them chortle over vcampaign tactics was disgusting.

Have you read the essay at HP by7 Jo Andrew .. I posted the strongest part at SJ? She now scares me. I am confidant that she would be a very competent leader, if anything I would prefer her hard ass attitude over Barack’s .. until the time comes when she has to make an ethical decision.

Last week I got so down about this that I began looking into aliyah again.

I don’t care whether Obama or Clinton wins. Each has baggage. So does McCain. Now the media is 100% focused on the Dem’s baggage. But when it’s Dem v. GOP, the focus will shift. And people will start asking JohnBoy about the Keating Five again. And they’ll start wondering why he hasn’t honored his six-month old promise to release medical records. And why he only partially released his tax records. And why he works so hard to fight the release of POW records that might show he worked with the NVA to give up American lives so he could get better treatment in POW camp. And why he hangs out with beautiful lobbyists who don’t happen to be his wife. And why he stood on a stage and said he was proud to be endorsed by a man who called the Catholic Church the Great Whore. And why he takes money from lobbyists even though he says he doesn’t. And how will his famous temper factor into any potential Presidential administration. And why he wrote loopholes into the campaign finance laws that solely benefited him. And why he’s flip-flopped so hard on nearly every major position since he started running for President.

When people start to compare and contrast EITHER Dem against a known liar like McCain, Dems win. Dems win. Dems win. Dems win.

    @3 Bye Bye

Sentiments like yours make me want to vote for McCain.

The fusillade of meaningless, personal attacks vt Rovians means we selct candidates based on criteria that give us the likes of GW Bush and Ronald Reagan.

Real issues, real qulaifications do not get discussed.

As for John McCain, my guess is that if he and BHO run the campign will be straight. These two guys are pretty devoted to real issues. Obama does not play dirty pool so he will not rais the crap you spread. Obama himslef has been pretty much treated to amud bath by HRC already.

OTOH, Hillary has been given a free ticket by Obama’s honesty. While your McMud is mostly rumor or old news, Hillary has a number of Wrighyt level scanhdals waiting for exploitation.

    1. Reverand Bill … Howsabout his having to give a opseach explaining the 800,000 lobbying fee? the Cayman island accounts? His refusal to commit to stop lobbying if she is elected.

    2. Churchgate Her Church has divested itself of investments in Israel.

    4. Magazinergate The mna who killed Healthcare 1, he is stil a high level adviser.

    5. Communism .. Oh yhe, she worked for a Communist law firm.

I am NOT listing these to encourage anyne to spread mud, but to point out that she has benefited immensely from Obama’s ethical approach to campaigning. I do not think McCain will be as kind.

    Mr. Cynical spews:

    Here is today’s Rasmussen Poll–
How can you possibly spin that Wright hasn’t hurt O-blah-blah??
    I guess love is blind!

    “”Monday, May 05, 2008
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Hillary Clinton with a four-point advantage over John McCain, 47% to 43%. At the same time, McCain leads Barack Obama by an identical margin, 47% to 43% (see recent daily results). Tracking results are updated daily by 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. In these match-ups, Clinton is supported by 78% of Democrats, Obama by 67%. McCain leads both potential opponents by four percentage points among unaffiliated voters.

Clinton leads McCain by eleven among women but trails by three among men. Obama leads McCain by four among women but trails by thirteen among men.

Twenty-seven percent (27%) of White Democrats prefer McCain over Obama. Thirteen percent (13%) pick McCain over Clinton.

Recently, there has been much discussion of who white working class voters will support in Election 2008. Among White voters who earn less than $40,000 annually, Clinton currently leads McCain by ten percentage points while McCain leads Obama by seven. Among White voters who earn between $40,000 and $75,000 a year, McCain leads Clinton by five and Obama by sixteen.”

    O-blah-blah cannot win in November.
He has permanently alienating White working class voters.

  6. 6

Most voters ARE stupid, and this is why the Democrats need to worry in November. This is why I’m worrying.

  7. 7

    ByeByeGOP spews:

@4 Jew I don’t care who you vote for. Old rumors is what the GOP uses and if Dems are going to win they have to fight fire with fire. If you want to vote for a guy who stole money from Americans in the Keating Five scandal v. a guy who had a bad pastor…then you’re a fucking moron anyway.

Won’t matter. FlipFlop McCain won’t win. The country is tired of being raped by the GOP. My assumption is that if you are a GOP voter – you buy into the myth that America is somehow responsible for Israel’s security. If it were up to me, we’d leave them to fend for themselves. They have nothing to do with America. Leave the entire Middle East to blow itself up for all I care. They’ve been at war forever and will be. They deserve the result.

    Puddybud spews:

Since bybygoober and Pelletizer have short memories, let’s revisit the Keating Five investigation with another PuddyFact from PuddyHistory Lesson 347 –

You all know Robert Bennett, brother of Bill Bennet and big time Donkeycrat. In his book he wrote this:

“At the completion of my investigation, I filed my report with the committee. I recommended that no further action be taken against Senators McCain and Glenn principally because once they learned that there was a criminal referral, they stopped aggressively doing Keating’s bidding with the regulators. However, I also recommended that the committee proceed with ethics charges against Senators Cranston, DeConcini, and Reigle and hold a hearing to look into their conduct. I believed that the evidence showed clearly that these three had violated Senate Rules and should be held accountable. My recommendation that the only Republican in the group, John McCain, be exonerated caused a big political problem, but my recommendations were based on evidence and not politics. Perhaps those who knew me to be a Democrat thought I would act differently, but they did not know me very well.”

  9. 10

    @7 Bye Bye
It sis folks like you that make the title of this thread reasonable.

You do not give a damn about the country, you would rather wallow in the Star.

So, supposing you really want Team Blue to win, chew on what I wrote. HRC is VERY susceptible to a right wing attack. Unless there is something left that wasn’t in the kitchen sink, BHO is not. If she is the candidate, then McC will paint her as Bush III!

As for Israel, you white liberals are soooo Christian. Morality?? It does not matter, just convenience and forgiveness. Blacks .. fuck em unless thay agreee to do what WE say. Jews, fuck em too if we need more petro for our hybrids. The Chinks .. hay, fuck em too if they take American jobs.

The sad image you leave me is of a bunch of beer belllied babies, looking for someone willing t chnage their diapers for less than minimum wage while we watch dumbass TV.

I suppose I ma being t harsh? What DO you stand for? Legalize MJ? Free speech in grade school? Unionize the doctors?

  10. 12

    ByeByeGOP spews:

@10 Jew once again I think ANY Dem is better for America than ANY GOP asshole. HRC has been attacked non-stop for more than a decade and is still standing. Obama has been attacked his entire life and is still standing. Both can stand up to the right wing attack machine. It’s a question of WILL they?

Morality doesn’t matter. Katrina taught us that. The Bush regime taught us that. I am not responsible for the decisions made by your forefathers.

I don’t care one bit about the Middle East because it’s demonstrated it can’t function. Not my problem.

I believe in the Constitution asswipe. I believe in freedom of speech. I believe in the Bill of Rights. All things your pal Flip Flop McCain would destroy if he could.

PuddyFact #348 – Something else lost on bybygoober and Pelletizer – the truth of the Keating Five was known to the NY Times back in 1990 when they wrote about it but they tried to used it again 18 years later over the Vick Iseman non-affair. It was Common Cause who didn’t want McCain freed from the prsecution over Robert Bennett’s suggestion. Well who is Common Cause… look them up yourselves. Hint – here’s one of their blog lines: “Supreme Court ruling will disenfranchise Indiana primary voters”

    Typical liberal MSM….

I will vote for Gregoire this time, thiough not witht a lot of enthusiasm and at least as much as a vote against him as for her.

I wold love to vote for a Rep who would take what is good in the Rep party and a strong ethical, progressive (in a non liberal sense).

Rossi does not deliver any7 of that.

His cowardice in Clark Co, is worse than cowardice. I have zero tolerance for racism and there is no rational explanation other than that for how the CC event was treated.

As Goldy says, our tax system sucks. We are NOT overtaxed, we are taxed stupidly. A RESPONSIBLE Rep would enlist Eyman in a re4alistic tax reform system.

I fault CG for her lack of leadership in a wide range of issues. So far DR has not taken up nay of these banners.

Finally, CG is clearly competent as an administrator, whatever else I might think.

She can not close because she is offering nothing but Rovism. She has YET to offer a convincing reason tpo vote for her. Experience? Perhaps but that is overcome by her dreadful lack of judgment in how she has run this campaign.

I’m waiting with a mild degree of interest to see who ends up being McCain’s running mate. My guess it’s going to be some hard-core loyalist from the neocon camp.

My interest in mentioning it is to illustrate the calibre (or lack of) of the current administration and the blindness of the type of follower as represented by the jerk who calls himself Sam Adams.

    Roger Rabbit spews:

I’m disappointed by Hillary’s gas tax pandering — and glad to see that most people see through it. As I’ve explained many times on this blog, lowering gas taxes doesn’t lower pump prices. The only thing that can bring down gas prices is reduced demand. What discourages people from wasting fuel is higher, not lower, fuel taxes. We’d be paying $1 to $1.50 less for gas if Al Gore’s 50-cent gas tax had been enacted years ago. But rightwingers laughed at him, bought gas guzzlers, and are reaping what their ignorance and stupidity sowed. I have no sympathy for them — I’m too busy watching my oil stocks go up to feel sorry for the hicks who shot their own feet off.

  31. 34

    Roger Rabbit spews:

Maybe there’s still hope for the American voter. Maybe enough people now realize that what really matters is not whether Obama wears a flag pin or resides in the same neighborhood as an ex-60s radical, but the fact their wages have been falling for 35 years; their own government has given their jobs to foreigners; they’ve been robbed by dishonest banks, mortgage brokers, and credit card companies; and so on. A few greedy elitists who are already so obscenely rich they don’t know how to spend the money they already have are waging economic and class warfare against America’s workers and middle class. That’s what this election should be about, and whether ordinary Americans can have jobs, keep a roof over their heads, and feed their kids is what candidates should be talking about. But that’s exactly what Republicans — and not a few Democrats who have sold themselves to the greedy corporations — don’t want to talk about … because they’re the robbers, you see.

  32. 36

    Roger Rabbit spews:

Which is worse, a pastor who thinks the U.S. government’s behavior is sometimes evil, or a pastor who wants to start World War 3?

I’ll take Obama’s minister over McCain’s minister anyday. Don’t misinterpret that; I’m not endorsing Wright. He’s a nutjob. All I’m saying is he’s tame compared to Hagee, and McCain’s bad judgment in associating himself with Hagee disqualifies him from being president.

Obama has repudiated Wright; McCain not only refuses to disown Hagee but agrees with him. The DNC should resurrect LBJ’s countdown to nuclear war ad; McCain is Barry Goldwater all over again. And, not coincidentally, is from Goldwater’s state and occupies Goldwater’s former senate seat.

  33. 37

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@35 McCain endured hell as a POW, and I genuinely feel for him. There’s no question he should get government benefits, including veteran’s medical care, for the rest of his life. But he is running for president; he wants to be commander-in-chief; he wants authority to send other people’s children into harm’s way; and because of this, we can’t ignore the fact that he cooperated with the enemy while other captured pilots who went through the same thing didn’t. We can’t ignore the fact that his “breaking point,” as he puts it, was less than everyone else’s. The inescapable logical conclusion is that the wrong guy is running for president. The GOP’s candidate should be one of the other POWs, not the weakest one of the bunch.

  34. 38

    "Hannah" spews:

Roger, maybe I missed something, but is Hagee really McCain’s minister? Or just someone who supports his campaign for President?

    @24 in McCain’s own words…

McCain slowly wrote, “I am a black criminal and I have performed the deeds of an air pirate. I almost died and the Vietnamese people saved my life, thanks to the doctors.”

Now what we really want to know is what else has he done that he has NOT admitted to. We already know he gave aid and comfort to the enemy. What else? Why is he fighting so hard to keep the POW records sealed?

If you were a true patriot and not just GOP swill – you’d want these answers too. Asswipe!

McCain stood on a stage with this man Hagee. He said he welcomed his endorsement – sought it out in fact. Go to YouTube and search for the Hagee video where he in fact calls the Catholic Church the great whore. McCain’s got some splanin’ to do.

“Do not be deceived, the MAJORITY of people don’t have a scorecard when it comes to Barack Hussein Obama.

His associations are NOT the lead stories on the NBC Nightly News and the New York Times ISN’T stopping the presses to publish them.

Most people don’t know about Obama’s association with William Ayers. Most people don’t know that Ayers has given Obama money, that they socialized together and that they served on the board of a foundation together.

Moreover, the few snippets about Ayers that make the news usually contain qualifications and rationalizations regarding Ayers’ past.

It might be mentioned that despite the indiscretions of his youth he is now a “respected professor.”

You might hear that he was a “radical” (let’s make no mistake here… Ayers was more than just a radical… radicals do not necessarily advocate acts of violence…)

You may even hear that Ayers was never actually convicted.

But the media is in no rush to tell the American people that Ayers — and Bernadine Dohrn — actually advocated a dozen bombings; including the bombings of the U.S. Capitol building in 1971 and the Pentagon in 1972.

In fact, Ayers proudly told the New York Times; “I don’t regret setting bombs… I feel we didn’t do enough.”

According to Melanie Morgan, writing for

“Ayers and Obama are currently personal friends, and they etched their political alliance in stone when Obama visited the couple at their home in 1995, secured their support and received financial help for his political campaign.”

Is a longtime association with a man like Ayers simply a lapse in judgment? Or is it something much deeper?

Each of us should make our own conclusions but that can’t happen unless someone is willing to tell the unvarnished truth about Barack Hussein Obama!”

    More Associations…

Then there’s Jodie Evans. Here’s what Morgan writes about Evans in the same article:

” Barack Obama filed a report with the FEC revealing that one of his campaign finance bundlers is none other than Jodie Evans, a radical, anti-American activist who helped orchestrate a scheme that provided $600,000 in aid to Islamic terrorists in Iraq. When she wasn’t determinedly undermining U.S. troops in Iraq, Evans was working to help advance the anti-American Marxist regimes of Fidel Castro in Cuba and Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Evans isn’t just a Barack Obama fundraising bundler; she also put together Obama’s first Hollywood fundraiser and launched the Code Pink ‘Listen Hillary’ campaign against Obama’s chief Democratic opponent.”

Another Obama associate is Sam Graham-Felsen. Graham-Felsen is an “official blogger” for the Obama Campaign.

Felsen was also a staff writer for The Nation and one of his articles appeared in Socialist Viewpoint — an official publication of the Socialist Workers Organization.

Just in case there is any doubt where the Socialist Worker Organization stands, the following passage from the Socialist Viewpoint website should clarify matters:

“The Socialist Workers Organization was formed to advance the revolutionary Marxist political program in the United States. Our members are long time active participants in the socialist and labor movements. We agree with Karl Marx that society is divided into social classes whose interests are irreconcilable.”

Todd Warner Huston, writing for the Internet blog,, had this to say about Graham-Felsen:

“The list of Barack Obama associates that hold views that clash with mainstream America is getting longer every day and now we can add another notch in the ‘anti-American’ column of Obama campaign workers and supporters. This time we find that the Obama campaign’s official blogger, Sam Graham-Felsen, has spent time in France participating in labor riots, has written for a socialist magazine, hung a communist flag in his home, and was a fan of Marx while at Harvard.”

And while we’re on the subject of flags, how about this offering from the website

“Barack Obama has some ‘splainin’ to do. Fox News cameras captured a disturbing image in a campaign office in Houston: that of a Cuban flag with Communist mass murderer Che Guevara’s face printed on it. Naturally, Obama’s ‘explanation’ was that the volunteer office is independently run, so he has no control over what goes on there. And that’s supposed to make voters want him elected president?”

If voters aren’t asking questions about O-blah-blah’s affiliations, they are stupid.
We aren’t voting for the next American Idol..but for President of the USA!

Hannah@44: That’s because the liberal MSM like Frank Rich want you to believe Hagee is McCain’s spiritual advisor. But as we all know that ain’t the case.

But butt buddies bybygoober, clueless idiot, Peleltizer and others here will keep hope alive…

Hey bybygoober… where are the Keating Five comments? R U MIA? No? Just your single celled organism called a brain…

This time we find that the Obama campaign’s official blogger, Sam Graham-Felsen, has spent time in …. France

    The Horror!

re 38: McCain sought Haggee’s support, not the other way around.

And don’t you think that RNC point of yours is a little weak. McCain knows that Haggee is a dangerous crank, yet he still caters to the fat money-grubbing spawn of Satan: the NOT Reverend James Tecumseh Haggee.

re 53: Shut the fuck up, you blabbering, pusilannimous puke. You have nothing to say. You are irrelevant!

I never knew there was such hateful, twisting the truth, slanderous, let alone such childish people on left as I have seen here over time. Oh now don’t get me wrong, there are a couple on the right, but they don’t seem to sweat out hatred out of their pores. And yeah yeah yeah, I know the left response, well the right started it so we’re finishing it…childish! I am proud Obama AND McCain don’t stoop to that 5 year old level!

Hannah/Piddlydick – when you’re in the federal prison are you going to tell them you are a boy or a girl.

And provide links to threats I’ve made of violence against you Lil Bitch. Feel free to do that. Cause I did in fact report you to the proper authorities. You can bank on getting a phone call moron. My only regret is that I can’t be there to watch them arrest you.

And try that “he did it too shit” that you GOP asswipes always do. Won’t work this time cunt!

Gee – that expose Obama site – all they have is the weak association with ayers – a guy who served on the same board as Obama and was never convicted of anything – that is all they have? that and bunch of innuendo but no facts….gee I am really scared…slander politics with no facts – big deal. Old news and no facts…meanwhile, soldiers die in Iraq, the economy collapses and McCain will continue with things as they are – more corruption and more incompetence.

it’s no longer on topic, i guess, because i don’t want to fistfight anybody but goldy’s post reminded me of a great headline and story from The Onion along these lines. it was something like “eighty percent of voters think george bush has high approval ratings” but — surprise — very few of the eighty percent approved of bush. maybe we need to update an old phrase for this new era when everyone plays like they are strategist, advisor and pundit: perception of perception is reality. now that’s meta.

61 It’s a little like that famous quote from Casey Stengel:

“Nobody ever goes to Madison Square Garden. It’s too crowded.”

Or, on the other hand, this great pearl of wisdom from a UW Hub bathroom wall circa 1970:

“Eat shit…10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 flies can’t be wrong!”
