From the latest NY Times/CBS News poll:
A majority of American voters say that the furor over the relationship between Senator Barack Obama and his former pastor has not affected their opinion of Mr. Obama, but a substantial number say that it could influence voters this fall should he be the Democratic presidential nominee, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.
So the media’s incessant focus on Rev. Wright hasn’t changed voters’ opinion of Obama, merely their opinion of other people’s opinion. That must be very disappointing for the talking heads.
At the same time, an overwhelming majority of voters said candidates calling for the suspension of the federal gasoline tax this summer were acting to help themselves politically, rather than to help ordinary Americans.
Which I suppose in the eyes of Hillary Clinton makes the overwhelming majority of voters “elitists.”
Sounds like the average voter is pretty smart to me!

I watched Clinton on O’Reilly and came away with a restored belief that she is smart enough to be President, maybe ot be a great President.
How can I reconcile that with her apparent absence of a sense of ethics? She and Billy O got along all to well. Maybe .. if she gets to be President, he can apply as her Press Secretary? Watching the toe of them chortle over vcampaign tactics was disgusting.

Last week I got so down about this that I began looking into aliyah again.
I don’t care whether Obama or Clinton wins. Each has baggage. So does McCain. Now the media is 100% focused on the Dem’s baggage. But when it’s Dem v. GOP, the focus will shift. And people will start asking JohnBoy about the Keating Five again. And they’ll start wondering why he hasn’t honored his six-month old promise to release medical records. And why he only partially released his tax records. And why he works so hard to fight the release of POW records that might show he worked with the NVA to give up American lives so he could get better treatment in POW camp. And why he hangs out with beautiful lobbyists who don’t happen to be his wife. And why he stood on a stage and said he was proud to be endorsed by a man who called the Catholic Church the Great Whore. And why he takes money from lobbyists even though he says he doesn’t. And how will his famous temper factor into any potential Presidential administration. And why he wrote loopholes into the campaign finance laws that solely benefited him. And why he’s flip-flopped so hard on nearly every major position since he started running for President.
When people start to compare and contrast EITHER Dem against a known liar like McCain, Dems win. Dems win. Dems win. Dems win.

I’m disappointed by Hillary’s gas tax pandering — and glad to see that most people see through it. As I’ve explained many times on this blog, lowering gas taxes doesn’t lower pump prices. The only thing that can bring down gas prices is reduced demand. What discourages people from wasting fuel is higher, not lower, fuel taxes. We’d be paying $1 to $1.50 less for gas if Al Gore’s 50-cent gas tax had been enacted years ago. But rightwingers laughed at him, bought gas guzzlers, and are reaping what their ignorance and stupidity sowed. I have no sympathy for them — I’m too busy watching my oil stocks go up to feel sorry for the hicks who shot their own feet off.
Maybe there’s still hope for the American voter. Maybe enough people now realize that what really matters is not whether Obama wears a flag pin or resides in the same neighborhood as an ex-60s radical, but the fact their wages have been falling for 35 years; their own government has given their jobs to foreigners; they’ve been robbed by dishonest banks, mortgage brokers, and credit card companies; and so on. But he is running for president; he wants to be commander-in-chief; he wants authority to send other people’s children into harm’s way; and because of this, we can’t ignore the fact that he cooperated with the enemy while other captured pilots who went through the same thing didn’t. We can’t ignore the fact that his “breaking point,” as he puts it, was less than everyone else’s. The inescapable logical conclusion is that the wrong guy is running for president. The GOP’s candidate should be one of the other POWs, not the weakest one of the bunch.

it’s no longer on topic, i guess, because i don’t want to fistfight anybody but goldy’s post reminded me of a great headline and story from The Onion along these lines. it was something like “eighty percent of voters think george bush has high approval ratings” but — surprise — very few of the eighty percent approved of bush. maybe we need to update an old phrase for this new era when everyone plays like they are strategist, advisor and pundit: perception of perception is reality. now that’s meta.
