My bad

I’m man enough to admit when I am wrong.

Last week I told the story the Irons’ family wanted voters to hear… the long, sad tale of their son David Jr., and their heartfelt belief that he lacks the qualifications, intellect and temperament for high public office. In doing so, I also made a point of lambasting the MSM for not covering the details of the Irons family feud… details that I believe speak directly to his character.

In an era when pundits and reporters can soberly chronicle the impeachment of a president for lying about a blowjob, it seems inconceivable that our local media could ignore the character testimony of a candidate’s own parents. But that is exactly what the MSM has done for years, most recently with Joni Balter’s timid, almost-apologia of a column in the September 29 edition of the Seattle Times.

Well… apparently my Google skills aren’t what they should be, for in fact checking my reporting, Darryl at Hominid Views has uncovered a number of articles from 2003, covering various aspects of the troubles. So those reporters who have privately complained that they had previously covered this story, well… I guess you were sort of right. Sorry. My bad.

Of course, that was two years ago during a county council race, back when few voters were paying attention to David Irons. I still think it is relevant to raise these issues again in 2005, now that Irons is running for a much more high profile county-wide office. And I provided some necessary context by stringing all the various allegations together into a single, coherent narrative, so that voters could get a clearer picture of what the Irons family is actually alleging: not simply that he hit his mother, but that he is totally unfit for office.

So what did Darryl discover from these news accounts?

For the most part, Goldy’s story is corroborated. In fact, I am surprised at the consistency, given the way time tends to warp memories.

My point here is not to criticize Goldy for not knowing about these articles. In fact, I find it reassuring that Goldy rediscovered this story and documented it without use of previous media accounts. At the same time, Goldy’s account includes some new angles, eyewitnesses, and relevant new details.

Finally, Goldy did what the MSM did not do in 2003. He brought together many eyewitness stories to document larger patterns of dishonesty and voilence.

Darryl’s research kind of puts my harshest critics in a curious bind, as it’s tough to attack me as a lowlife slimeball for breaking a story that… um… apparently, I didn’t break. As to abusing me for rehashing the story just a few weeks before election day, hey… I’m just some blogger. I think the MSM did voters a public service by jumping all over this story on Friday… but it’s not like I held a gun to their head.

In any case, stay tuned, and keep looking for that other shoe.

David Irons pretty much cooked his own goose by his actions with his mother. The wacky thing is that some people are just mad that his mother is talking about it, live on Radio and on TV.

It looks like it’s all over for Irons at this point.

If the GOP had really thought they had a chance at the King County Executive seat, they would have run a more serious candidate that didn’t have his closet stuffed full of skeletons. The GOP knew full well of Iron’s “family issues” or could have found them out.

However, given no alternatives, the republicans were basically forced to take Irons as their candidate like they did when Will Baker ran on the GOP ticket for State Auditor.

    Eric @ 1

Indeed. But here is what I want to know. Why is it that the mother-beating, temper-tantrum stuff got covered by at least a couple of Seattle Times articles in 2003 when Irons was running for a lesser office, but in 2005, it takes a personally-financed investigation by a blogger to get a response from the MSM when Irons is running for King County Executive????

Secondly, where the fuck is the Seattle Times article on this? I mean, it looks like the Seattle Times covered a very similar story in 2003! Why is it that only the PI has the balls to pick it up two years later?

Hey, Seattle Times: GET SOME FUCKING SPINE!

    Erik spews:

It’s weird. There are always rumors going around about candidates at election time.

However, I can’t remember another where a candidate’s own family has come out so strong against a candidate and a mother accusing a candidate of hitting her.

How Irons got this far down the campaign trail without this being known much was really a failure of the MSM, until the last couple days at least.

King 5 News had a very good interview though that let Iron’s mother talk for herself when she said she was struck by him.

    No spin needed.

Your psychotic, low-level SHITSQUAD and SHITSQUADRON cannot deflect from the fact that Sims has a terrible track record on dealing with the issues that matter to voters starting with ELECTIONS, then PROPERTY RIGHTS (CAO), then NOISE POLLUTION (SWA…complete with “favors” for comrades) and a real major one that has been underplayed the PERPETUAL GRIDLOCK OF KINGCO TRAFFIC.
Sims is a failure. Irons will do much better…alleged temper and all. Sims is run around by the entrenched KingCo bureaucrats. BUREAUCRATS are running the show…Sims lets them because he is lazy, stupid and a major BULLSHITTER.

The posting about Goldy on SP is the only recent one that creates a number of comments on par with comments here.

The SP readers seem really bored (tuned out?) with all the typical SP stuff…it’s only Goldy’s story that gets them reacting.

Eyewitnesses? To what? Who are they?

David Irons Jr and his mother were the only ones in the room. Any account after that is told by one or the other. That is not an eyewitness.

Tantrums held in county offices told about by anonymous sources don’t count either. If you won’t put your name on it, I have no way to evaluate the motivation behind your allegation.

Don’t know who Darryl at Hominidviews is, but neither of you seem to have a working grasp of the English language. Corroboration does not mean hearsay, or passing along rumors and innuendo.

This is not a discussion about domestic violence – it is a discussion about an unstable woman (Irons’ mom) who is obviously deranged. She wants so much to destroy her son that SHE said on the radio on Friday that whether her son struck her is unimportant, rather his limited college education is more relevant. Say what? She is obviously bitter, vengeful and ridden by hate. The tone in her voice was hateful and mean….scary. When asked why she is attacking her son she said “because he keeps bringing the family into it by saying his father is his hero and he hopes we all reconcile.” Good reason for a mother to publically attack her child, don’t ya think? She is obviously a wack job and Irons has done the only decent thing he can do – ignore her and talk about the issues. Give it up, Goldy….your dive into slime just shows you’ll quote anybody as long as they serve your purpose, even if it uses an obviously ill woman as a pawn.

    RE 9 & 10

Yes, many of Stephans posts lately lack the drama of Goldy’s recent posts (is the Jerry Springer show still on the air?) When you post a story and only look for comments that support your adgenda it makes for a great food fight. If you were really looking for the complete and real story, would you be interested in knowing what type of relationsship Irons mother has with her extended family? I cannot confirm this but in one of the radio interviews last week I heard that 14 Aunts, Uncles and Cousins are supporting David Irons. Does this aspect fit Goldys adgenda? Would he enjoy posting the results?

Contrast this with many of Stephans latest posts, another double voter, another unregistered, another double voter and so on, not much juice there to discuss or refute, no drama nothing to argue about, overall very boring. Are you shocked, amazed or surprised that he keeps finding these problems?

Goldy and the Sims campaign are being smart in laying low and not trying to refute any of his claims.

Viscious Partisan – not sure what country you live in, but, yes – actual proof is needed to convict someone of a crime. Circumstantial evidence can be used, but it better be consistent. Otherwise, it just isn’t enough.

I repeat – there is no evidence of what happened between Irons and his mother other than what she has repeated. All the actions after the incident suggest that her version isn’t true.

We don’t live in a police state where anonymous charges are sufficient for throwing someone in jail, or from smearing those running for office. Too bad the left on this thread don’t get it.

I repeat – there is no proof, there are no witnesses, there is no corroboration.

    Janet S. @ 12

“…but neither of you seem to have a working grasp of the English language. Corroboration does not mean hearsay, or passing along rumors and innuendo.”

You are confusing two different things.

You seem to be reading the “corroborated” sentence as meaning that Janet C. Irons story is corroborated. That is not what that sentence says.

The corroboration of Goldy’s story arises because the major elements were carried by the press before. Indeed, if you actually read the Seattle Times articles cited, Goldy’s story is corroborated.

In other words, whether you believe Janet C. and Di Irons or not, you can no longer claim that Goldy made up things. Apparently Goldy has gotten the same story from Janet C. and Di Irons as the Seattle Times got from them two years ago.

That said, the Seattle Times article does provide additional details that supports Goldy’s version of Janet C.’s story. Even though Di did not witness Dave Jr. belting mum, she was a witness to the “crime scene.” Di has also witnessed other violent behavior by Dave Jr. (throwing wrenches and a radio) according to the Times article.

All of this seems to support the idea that Dave Jr. has an anger management problem.

Three of his family members say he lies, and Goldy has uncovered plenty of evidence to back that up.

Make up all the lame-ass excuses you wish, but the evidence is seriously stacked up against Jr.

In sum: someone with veracity issues, and who also has a bad temper (esp. in power situations) has NO PLACE in public office!

  37. 45

    dj spews:

    prr @ 32,

I understand that the only reason your accuser didn’t persue charges against you was that you threatened them.

    dj spews:

    yearight @ 28

“Barring other evidence neither can be proven guilty.”

You really have to READ the whole thing and try to understand the points.

Goldy’s “mistake,” in fact, strengthens the original point that Irons Jr. is seriously lacking in the integrety we want in politicians.

  40. 48

    prr spews:

    DJ @ 45

Okay, then along with the chain of thought.

Huh? The actions after the incident include Di walking into the room and finding her mother on the floor and needing help getting up.

“We don’t live in a police state where anonymous charges are sufficient for throwing someone in jail, or from smearing those running for office.”

    Anonymous charges???? What anonymous charges.

Y’all are missing an important point brought up by the discovery of additional stories. Several YEARS have passed and the story is still consistant. Wow, that’s a hell of a conspiracy. Bush/Rove/Libby et al couldn’t even keep thier story straight for a year or two, and they are supposedly the brain trust running this country. However, if we believe the detractors here, a three family memebers and a county councilman have all coluded and have successfully kept thier story straight for over 6 years! SPECTRUM and KAOS (fictional secret world domination organizations for all you non-trivia bufffs) better watch out!

    dj spews:

    prr @ 48

“You don’t suppose that posting an unfounded story, 2 weeks before an election, working in conjunction with the Simms campign, is beyond shady?”

Wouldn’t you have asked the same question if Goldy had posted his story 3 weeks before the election? One week before the election?

I am not sure why it is hard for you to believe that Goldy was following up on the intriguing Balder story on Sept 29th. For the most part, the timing of his post was constrained by how much investigation Goldy could do after this story piqued his interest and prior to the election.

I mean, given the number of people Goldy contacted, including interviewing Janet C. Irons in person, is it really surprising that it took Goldy 3 weeks to write-up the story? (And if you look at the post just prior to this story, Goldy was obviously struggling to finish the post by his self-imposed deadline.

Goldy was completely transparent about what date the story came out on (i.e. the day the ballots were mailed). If he had not targeted that day, the post might have shown up several days LATER, but probably not earlier.

Your suggestion that Goldy was working with the Sims campaign is unfounded. But, who cares??? Much of the stuff Goldy put together was previously documented in the Seattle Times. As far as I am concerned, the Sims campaign should have been giving out photocopies of the Times articles!

Domestic violence and anger management are serious issues that can prevent someone from being an effective leader, so voters have a right to know!

  45. 55

    prr spews:

Hooray for great minds like yours……lmao again @U

It was only years subsequent that (my mother) said anything. It wasn’t until my brother ran against Mr. Derdowski that my mother remembered lots of awful things about David.”

“Even after 1994, she said, their mother actively supported David’s two successful campaigns for the Issaquah School Board and never accused him of abusing her.”

“Janet A. Irons, a Bellevue lawyer, said that after her mother publicly said during the Irons-Derdowski campaign that David once had “abused” her, the older daughter asked her mother about it.”

“She said that she and David had gotten into a shouting match and that she ended up on the floor and that it was David’s fault,” Janet A. Irons said. “I asked her if she was having an insulin reaction at the time, and she said she was. She has never said to me that he hit her.”

The daughter added, “Someone hitting you could not bring on an insulin reaction. But having an insulin reaction can distort your perception. And I’m positive that if he had hit her, she would have told me.”

Like her brother, Janet A. Irons is estranged from their parents and their younger sister.”

Di Irons, 51, is a Democratic activist, serving on the state party central committee. She lives next door to her parents in Sammamish, in a house they own. Janet A. Irons also is an active Democrat, unlike their conservative Republican brother.

NO, no, no, no. The story of abuse was first aired by the mother only when her son ran against someone the mother endorsed. She hadn’t even mentioned it to her own daughter before that and she’d endorsed Irons in intervening elections! The mother’s allegation is the only first hand account of violence ever alleged against Irons – and the mom is a fruit loop. Did you listen to her? Geeeeeezzzz!!!! Thank god she isn’t my mother! She said her son was stupid, a liar, and then proceeded to attack the daughter too. Is there anything on God’s green earth that would get your mom to do that to you on the radio? Irons obviously has enormous fortitude that he didn’t let such a cancer in his life erode his self-confidence. As far as I’m concerned, the wild accusations from his nuts-oid mother are a reason to vote for him based on his strength of character, not a reason to vote against him.

I don’t recall any version of the story from Mom to include the fact that Di came in and rescued her from the evil son who was beating her. That is totally absent in the eleven years of retelling the story. She said she fled the location and hid.

On the other hand, Di continues to say that she picked her mom up off the floor.

These are two different stories. Go ahead and say they are consistent, but I don’t see it.

Sorry to keep going back to facts.

It’s interesting that you’re choosing this time to focus so much energy on what is effectively a non-issue. This 2-6 year old story isn’t going to have any bearing among the general populace for the November election. In fact, if Sims and his supporters here yammer enough, it will probably cause a backlash which will swing in Irons favor by one or two percentage point. Scandal for scandal’s sake doesn’t really sell anymore.

“The story of abuse was first aired by the mother only when her son ran against someone the mother endorsed.”

Yes. Janet A. said this, and the 2003 Seattle Times articles verify this as well.

“She hadn’t even mentioned it to her own daughter before that and she’d endorsed Irons in intervening elections!”

Janet A has said her mother did not mention it to her or come out with the story until 5 year later.

However, if you read the fucking links that Goldy gave, you would see from the Seattle Times, Oct 30 1993, “Di Irons said she entered the office after the incident and found her mother on the floor, unable to get up on her own.”

That is a direct quote from Di Irons published in the Seattle Times.

“The mother’s allegation is the only first hand account of violence ever alleged against Irons – and the mom is a fruit loop.”

    Nope. Sister Di (same article):

Di Irons said that when she and her brother worked in the family’s cable-TV business, she saw an angry David Irons Jr. throw objects such as wrenches and hand-held radios at their father.

She said she never saw him hit their father but said “I’ve seen him back my dad into a corner, yelling and pointing a finger into his chest.”

    And, from Goldy’s original story:

But the Irons’ family has many tales of David Jr.’s “violent temper” and his abusive, cuss-filled rages in which he would push his father and poke him in the chest, and occasionally fling objects in blind anger.

And then there are a bunch of second-hand accounts:

In one such fit he threw a wrench at his nephew, Di’s son Chris, who afterwards went to his grandfather and refused to ever work with his uncle again. Even the hard-nosed crews who laid cable for the family business complained of working with David Jr., finding it unsettling to have the boss’s son indiscriminately toss obscenities and tools in their direction.

Well… many who have worked with him apparently do know. At Brigadoon.com, a former officer tells me that Irons had a reputation as a “bully” who many colleagues avoided entirely. According to council scuttlebutt, Irons has a similar reputation for bullying staffers – particularly women – several of whom reportedly played for colleagues recordings of abusive voicemail messages left for them by the choleric councilman. Derdowski says an unnamed council staffer complained to him that Irons was “abusive and rude”, while another former staffer recalled to me a copy machine mishap that ended in a door-slamming screaming fit.

Per prr’s request (and your desire for more first-hand descriptions), more firsthand accounts will be forthcoming.

“Did you listen to her? Geeeeeezzzz!!!! Thank god she isn’t my mother! She said her son was stupid, a liar, and then proceeded to attack the daughter too. Is there anything on God’s green earth that would get your mom to do that to you on the radio?”

Ummm … I suppose if one is a pathological liar, potentially elected to a powerful office, mom might be put in a position to do that.

“Irons obviously has enormous fortitude that he didn’t let such a cancer in his life erode his self-confidence. As far as I’m concerned, the wild accusations from his nuts-oid mother are a reason to vote for him based on his strength of character, not a reason to vote against him.”

No…both individuals made affirmative statements about what happened. The statements are not mutually exclusive. Neither has denied the other’s account.

“It’s interesting that you’re choosing this time to focus so much energy on what is effectively a non-issue. This 2-6 year old story isn’t going to have any bearing among the general populace for the November election.”

I believe it is the apologists who are trying to defend the motherbeating incident. I have, all along been focusing on the big picture–the overall pattern of David jr., a man who appears to have an anger management problem and a “veracity” problem.

Both problems disqualify him from this office—big time.

Goldy’s story is, in part, based on interviews with people who have worked with him more recently. Perhaps some of these people will “go public” as save us from a shipwreck.

  71. 86

    Janet S spews:

Throwing things at his father is not the same as beating his mother. And, there is no account of this happening from anyone except Di and a bunch of anonymous sources. It isn’t clear in the episode with Chris if this is a retelling by Di, or a response from Chris himself. So we have “cable crews” and “council staffers” and “colleagues”. None of these people have names? None are willing to go on record?

The beating incident still isn’t clear. Was she beaten so badly that she was left in a heap on the floor, for her daughter to come to the rescue, or did she flea from the scene and hide? This is a basic point, where both can’t be true.

Di’s account of finding her mother on the floor seems much more consistent with Irons’ story, of this being a diabetic episode. There is no evidence that he ever hit anyone, and yet he beat his mother into a heap on the floor? Not plausible.

Too bad none of this skepticism is present in any of this. Maybe it is why the MSM never published the story.

  72. 88

    dj spews:

    Janet S,

“Throwing things at his father is not the same as beating his mother.”

Seriously Janet, think about what you just said! The whole point here is not that he will beat-up mothers if elected to King County Executive. The point is, the man has an anger management problem. People with such problems cannot manage a large staff, let alone lead a large, complex county government.

“So we have “cable crews” and “council staffers” and “colleagues”. None of these people have names? None are willing to go on record?”

That remains to be seen. But, since he is a council member for several more months, and potentially the KC Exec, it is a little much to expect council staff to come forward, isn’t it?

“The beating incident still isn’t clear. Was she beaten so badly that she was left in a heap on the floor, for her daughter to come to the rescue, or did she flea from the scene and hide? This is a basic point, where both can’t be true.”

From the accounts by mom and Di, there is no contradiction.

“There is no evidence that he ever hit anyone, and yet he beat his mother into a heap on the floor? Not plausible.”

False. There is evidence that he has a violent temper (or “billows up easily” as mom Irons says).

“Too bad none of this skepticism is present in any of this. Maybe it is why the MSM never published the story.”

The MSM never published the story?????? What the fuck?

dj – too bad you didn’t actually refute any of my points.

All those “cable crews” and “colleagues” could come forward at any time, with no risk of reprisal. If the council staffers had any integrity, they would come forward as well. But, none have. Either they are all scared of Irons, or none of it is true.

Mom said she ran from the scene, and hid. How is this consistent with being in a heap on the floor at the scene? I am truly puzzled.

Ummmm…good point, Janet. They might be afraid of getting the shit kicked out of them if they talk. (Irons is a blackbelt in Judo–no kidding). I think the issue here is simply time. Give it a few days….

But, for the record, do you think Goldy is lying when he says, “while another former staffer recalled to me a copy machine mishap that ended in a door-slamming screaming fit?” I mean, seriously, you may not like what Goldy writes, but he doesn’t lie.

“Mom said she ran from the scene, and hid. How is this consistent with being in a heap on the floor at the scene? I am truly puzzled.”

Di helped her back up, and a freightened mother grabbed her purse and fled in the car.

As I said before, there is nothing contradictory about what each witness said had happened.

But, you might be right, Janet. I mean, mothers and sisters are so prone to making up shit like this about their brothers….

IRONS CAMPAIGN RESPONDS TO NEGATIVE ATTACKS

Having responded in the past to media stories and inquiries about personal family differences, the David Irons campaign will not respond further. Mr. Irons notes that Ron Sims’ campaign manager stated their plan to begin ‘mudslinging’ this week and what’s being seen now is result of this plan. David Irons further notes that it is apparent that as Ron Sims continues to slip in voter polls, he appears less willing to discuss the issues of concern to voters. “I want to talk about finding real solutions to King County congestion relief, activating measurable changes within the Elections Office and regaining public trust in county government. Mr. Sims prefers the game of smoke and mirrors, instead,” states Irons.

Questioning the timing of the fabrications just as the absentee ballots are in the mail, Irons further states, “If you talk with other members of my family and the people I’ve been working with for years, you’ll find that my reputation is intact.”

Fellow County Councilmember Kathy Lambert had this to say of the recent developments: “I’ve worked with David Irons, side-by-side, for over four years now and I know that he’s the same person today that he’s always been … respectful, considerate of others and a good friend.”

Note the person who called him, “respectful, considerate of others and a good friend” happens to be:

    *Mom
    *Coworker
