Good luck to the family of Manuel Ellis. Their lawsuit won’t bring him back. But it is the closest thing to justice they can get.

Justice would have been him still being alive. It would have meant he wasn’t detained for no reason. It would have meant no officers kneeling on his neck.

Perhaps it means that the next cop doesn’t do those things. That we never see the need for another lawsuit.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated if you haven’t yet.

Carl, what you and anyone who reads the report needs to understand is that the chances of this lawsuit going to trial are very, very low. Even the chances of gaining murder convictions against these three police are very low.

And because of that, the chances that the Tacoma Police Department will be compelled to enact meaningful changes to the way they train, command, and supervise police to murder unarmed citizens are also very, very low. Remember, these kinds of violent arrests and murders by police are nothing new. And people have been suing police officers and police departments to try and stop it for decades. It hasn’t gotten any better.

And since police often weaponize these kinds of reports and stories to promote the general idea that “the streets are a jungle” it usually only leads to putting more of the same kinds of police on those streets. So more people get attacked, beat up, and occasionally murdered.

We all need to stop thinking that the civil court system is any part of a solution to the problem of lawless, violent, unaccountable sport-killing police in our communities.
We have to elect new leaders, change the laws, change the funding, and dismantle traditional policing if we really want to never see the need for another lawsuit.

When the headline doesn’t match the fact, dKos version.

    Headline:

Border Patrol on horseback whipping Haitian refugees: “Go back to Mexico”

    Text:

As the Haitians tried to climb onto the U.S. side of the river Sunday afternoon, the agent shouted: “Let’s go! Get out now! Back to Mexico!”

The agent swung his whip menacingly, charging his horse toward the men in the river who were trying to return to an encampment under the international bridge in Del Rio after buying food and water in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico.

Swinging a whip is to whipping someone as drawing a firearm is to shooting someone. You swing a whip while it is still coiled, by the way. A more menacing, non-injurious method of using a whip would be to crack it.

To be fair, dKos disclaims as such:

    2, cont.
Actually Carl, I was previously familiar with the case. But now having read a few of media reports and the AG’s PC statement I think it offers all of us a very useful illustration into why lawsuits just can’t fix this.

Your state law requires independent, third party investigations of police involved killings. So the Pierce County Sheriff took over the investigation of the killing. And they did so under false pretenses, concealing from the public and the Attorney General the fact that one of their own Deputies took part in the arrest that resulted in Ellis’ killing. They violated the law and committed criminal obstruction of justice. And the Detective who participated in that fraud is now the Pierce County Sheriff.

These violent, unprovoked attacks and murders, and the obstruction of justice that normally and very casually follows are entirely systemic to modern policing. A money award to grieving family won’t change any of that.

Freshman US senator knows a weak president when she sees one.

POLITICO Playbook: Scoop: Sinema issues ultimatum to Biden

Sen. KYRSTEN SINEMA (D-Ariz.) delivered a tough message to President JOE BIDEN at a private meeting Wednesday, we’re told: If the House delays its scheduled Sept. 27 vote on the bipartisan infrastructure plan — or if the vote fails — she won’t be backing a reconciliation bill.

    And that’s not all.

In another sign of trouble for Democrats, our Laura Barrón-López scooped Sunday night that Sinema has also told the White House she opposes the Democrats’ prescription drug plan — a critical source of funding for the reconciliation package.

Over on Goldy’s Twitter sidebar, an increasingly shrill David Goldstein implores y’all not to consider Sinema a “centrist”.

    Four years ago.

Start at the link and just scroll down.

Wall Street is pressuring GE to cut its dividend to free up cash to invest in its businesses. We’ll find out on Nov. 13 what the company decides. If you buy the stock today, you’re getting a yield on cost over 4%, and if they cut the dividend by a third, you’ll still get a dividend yield at about the S&P 500 average. You could also expect the cut to eventually be restored as cash flow and earnings improve.

I think the changes will be good for the stock long-term. Other investors apparently agree, because the stock rose $1.73 today from its opening price of $22.10 to close at $23.83. GE actually posted a gain today after releasing its shitty earnings report. That’s a sign of investor confidence in the company’s long-term prospects.

GE is one of my larger positions, and I’m comfortable with the idea of holding onto it. If you presently own it, you shouldn’t panic and sell it, and I think the current share price is a buying opportunity if you have the patience to wait 2 or 3 years for returns to materialize. It’s a solid company today and I think it will emerge from this transition as a stronger company down the road.

    You’re welcome.

(That “buying opportunity was at $23.81/share, on 10/20/17. Share price today, reverse split-adjusted, is $12.34. IOW had you listened to Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit you’d be in the hole more than 10 bucks per share today.)

    A crisis of competence.

Chuck Todd: Biden Facing “Credibility Issues On The World Stage” Ahead Of UN Speech

CHUCK TODD: I think he’s got a pretty big credibility crisis on his hands. Because all of these problems, in some ways, showed up after he said something basically the exact opposite.

    – Afghanistan withdrawal wasn’t going to be messy. This wasn’t going to look like Saigon.

    – The booster shots, he came out and essentially said eight months, and even indicated maybe we should start it as soon as five months. Now we’re not sure if anybody under 65 is going to get a booster shot.

    – Of course, the border has been, whether this is — we can talk about the border problems and say they are years in the making, but it’s pretty clear we have a bigger problem now than we’ve had in years, and these policies have turned into becoming a magnet.

He’s got a lot of work to do.

He’s nowhere near up to the challenge. Calling lids at 1 p.m. doesn’t get the work done. It does get First Vegetable Joe Biden an ice cream cone, though. Everyone’s got their priorities.

Now tell us why you didn’t short it…

Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, you seem to think that the only way I could have “won” our little argument was to actively bet against the shares by selling GE short.

There are two problem with that perspective.

    1. There are more ways to bet against GE than selling the shares short. One can merely get the hell out of the position, as I did months before our online argument, and reinvest in something that looks more appealing, which for me was Honeywell. Another is to sell naked calls against the shares and book the gain when the position expires, worthless. Yet a third is to buy puts, although that involves risking capital up front.

    2. My point was never that GE was going to tank. My point was to criticize your incredibly foolish advice to Newt. You then gave me the opportunity to criticize your defense of GE because it paid a dividend, and then to criticize your objection to holding shares that do not. BTW check out the shares of Berkshire Hathaway nowadays, compared with the examples I gave on 10/20/17. BRKA and BRKB still do not pay dividends.

Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, you are a foolish investor and you have harmed your family because of your foolishness. It is incredibly simple for me to point that out, with substantial documented support, as I did in that 2017 thread.

You misunderstood, and therefore discounted, GE’s woes and you paid a price for it, both financially and reputationally. I’m just fine having pointed it out contemporaneously, and have very much enjoyed the opportunity to gloat about it afterward. It’s been especially fun because the hole you dug for yourself was so incredibly deep, and you had absolutely no idea what you were doing.

Options on GE since the shares hit bottom have been very lucrative. Selling naked puts with a strike price of 11 (pre-split) and selling naked calls with a strike price of 16 (pre-split) paid very, very well. I didn’t have to own the shares. I needed only to risk having to own the shares had my trades gone south.

Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, NOW is a time to be somewhat positive about the prospects of GE shares over the next 3-5 years. October 2017 was a very stupid time to be so positive.

You realize that, of course. Now you do.

After Afghanistan Pullout, US Seeks NATO Basing, Intel Pacts

Milley, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and American intelligence officials have warned that al-Qaida or the Islamic State group could regenerate in Afghanistan and pose a threat to the United States in one year to two years.

The U.S. military has said it can conduct counterterrorism surveillance and, if necessary, strikes in Afghanistan from “over the horizon” — meaning from assets based in other countries. But they have made it clear that surveillance flights from bases in the Persian Gulf are long and provide limited time in the air over Afghanistan. So they have talked about seeking basing agreements, overflight rights and increased intelligence-sharing with nations closer to Afghanistan, including some neighbors.

In recent months, however, U.S. officials have reported little progress in any negotiations on any basing agreements.

It’s really not going to get any better now that Biden has shown that there is no good reason to trust anything his overlords tell him to say.

“Paul Hodgkins of Florida … was one of the few dozen rioters who breached the Senate floor shortly after it was evacuated. He pleaded guilty … and was sentenced to eight months in prison.

“But as his surrender date drew closer, Hodgkins fired his veteran attorney, hired a new one who only passed the bar last year and launched an effort to unwind his guilty plea ….

“Even though the federal guidelines called for roughly one to two years behind bars, District Judge Randolph Moss settled at eight months, in part because Hodgkins ‘accepted responsibility and pled guilty exceptionally early,’ he said. …

“Last month, with Hodgkins’ surrender date quickly approaching, he switched up his lawyers. He abruptly fired Leduc — who has nearly 30 years of experience in federal litigation and as a JAG officer — and retained Stewart, a novice who only passed the Florida bar exam last November. Stewart soon told the judge that she would challenge Hodgkins’ sentence by claiming Leduc was an ineffective lawyer.”

When he isn’t busy making up fake friends in far away places, like every other Republican you know Burka Bob would tell still tell you the Trump/Russia investigation was fake and produced nothing.

But that’s not what the still ongoing indictments previously slow-walked by Barr & Co. would tell you. Two top Republican Super PAC operators from McConnell, Bush 41, Ron Paul, and Trump campaigns indicted last week for moving hundreds of thousands from Putin into Trump’s campaign and trying to hide it through straw donors in the senior ranks of the party.

It’s worthwhile to read the indictment, since it makes clear that the only reason this was caught and prosecuted was due to the brazen, and frankly lazy manner in which the Trump foreign campaign financial fraud was carried out. The Trump PAC director sold access to Putin’s Russian operative in exchange for Putin’s money transfers. Then as future opportunities arose, purchased access to Trump for the Russian operative on Putin’s behalf with money from the PAC. Only after the fact did they bother to paper over the original source of the funds.

It appears clear that this process was ongoing and common operating procedure for many of Trump’s aligned dark money PACs and was the standard way of bringing very large donor money directly into the Trump campaign. They were just sloppy on this one occasion and failed to properly conceal the origin of the funds coming into the Super PAC. Barr slow walked this one to make sure it was not filed before the 2020 election.

Putin was elbow deep in Trump from the very beginning.

A six point plan for insurrection coming directly from the Oval Office via the GOP “Election Security” team:

    https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/21066248/eastman-memo.pdf

Amy Kremer and Ali Alexander did their part. Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Roger Marshall, John Kennedy, and Cindy Hyde-Smith did their part. Putin did his part. Proud Boys and Oath Keepers did their part. Even Ashli did her part.

But Mike Pence refused to go along.

Trump, Meadows, and Giuliani circulated this plan among senior Senators in the GOP alerting them to their intentions and seeking their assistance. Obviously they got that assistance from a significant number. Cruz and Hawley all played their assigned roles. But Pence was a no-show.

You never once heard of this particular six point plan memo until today. Because every single one of those Senate Republicans has been lying about it ever since, claiming that the right wing terrorist attack on the Congress was “just some excited tourists” and that they were “just asking questions” about the electoral vote count.

The Des Moines Register has a poll out, and it’s not good news for America’s First Vegetable.

Fewer than one third of Iowans approve of the job Joe Biden is doing as president, a steep drop from earlier this year.

Thirty-one percent of Iowans approve of how Biden is handling his job, while 62% disapprove and 7% are not sure, according to the latest Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll.

That’s a 12 percentage point drop in approval from June, the last time the question was asked. Biden’s disapproval numbers jumped by 10 points during the same period. In June, 43% approved and 52% disapproved.

Biden’s job approval has not been in net positive territory in Iowa since March, when 47% of Iowans approved of his performance and 44% disapproved.

“This is a bad poll for Joe Biden, and it’s playing out in everything that he touches right now,” said pollster J. Ann Selzer.

Biden was fourth in the Iowa caucuses in 2020.

It’s a good thing the poll didn’t ask for approval of the “Biden-Harris Administration”, or the approval result would have been single-digits.

    93,
Fundamentally I think Pence is a guy who really doesn’t comprehend the business he’s in and the partners he’s gone into business with.

I reckon Pence figured he was doing “the right thing” politically. That Trump had lost. That upon leaving office Trump would fade. And that if he hoped for future promotion within the organization he needed to be on “the right side” of that inevitable outcome. As he saw it, Trump was going down and had become irrational and desperate. Trump, Giuliani, Meadows, etc. may have claimed all sorts of things about their plan and who was on board. But Pence had no way to confirm any of that and no reason to trust or believe any of it. So he turned on them, assuming that within a few months he’d be the presumptive leader in the race for the 2024 nomination.

Obviously he was and is completely wrong about that.

Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
