I don’t know the law well enough to guess how the judge will rule on allowing the Seattle Police Department to be added as a defendant in a sex trafficking case. But damn. There should be mechanisms to hold SPD accountable, even if a lawsuit isn’t it.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now and get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Nation’s report card: Massive drop in math scores, slide in reading linked to COVID disruption

Students in fourth and eighth grade saw unprecedented declines in math and significant dips in reading achievement between 2019 and 2022, according to the results of national exams given last school year and released Monday. The declines were broad-based — affecting students in every state and every region of the country.
“The results point out and confirm that this is a pretty massive hit to student achievement in our country,” said Scott Marion, a testing expert and member of the board that oversees the tests.
Other researchhas already shown that academic progress was derailed during this period. But the results from the closely watched National Assessment of Educational Progress provide the most detailed and authoritative accounting yet, with data coming from a representative set of students nationwide and allowing for comparisons across states and some cities.

Teachers made a shit-ton of money while abandoning students. Lots of “free” $1400 checks and other goodies, summers off…

The GOP has two weeks to ram this down Democrats’ throats.

Democrats fucked America’s kids. Voters should fuck Democrats for doing it.

Your unimaginative and lame attempt to smear teachers and Biden’s Covid-19 relief checks* overlooked a real opportunity.

    @1

One might also notice that the Educational system was totally unprepared to deal with something they should have been thinking about for a long long time. Like what happens when a mass shooting happens in a 20,000 student mega high school? How do you complete the school year in a building no one is going to re-enter. Shuttle them to other campuses? What if it’s the 45,000 student school in PA? How do we deal with a large population of students that literally will not attend their school due to trauma, natural disaster or plague?

And never mind the logical fallacy. “Math scores plummet after lockdowns” It must be this reason…because we want it to be…even though….we can’t show it….in fact it’s probably something else….because….evidence….WE KNOW IT CAUSE WE FEEL IT!

Literally for this theory to be true States that did zero statewide lockdowns at all should have stayed constant or increased….but:
    Arkansas: Scores dropped
    Iowa: No change
    North Dakota: Scores dropped
    South Dakota: Scores dropped*
    Utah: Scores dropped
    Wyoming: Scores dropped

Huh…let’s go back to “after school lockdowns”. How can this be? If they didn’t lockdown….how did the lockdown decrease the scores? So very logical, Captain.

“Hi we’re the republican party. And even when there is absolutely no evidence to support our claims, even claims that can be easily proven false, we’re going to run with our claims. We have no evidence and no solutions but…..the Democrats are sheep!”

*worth noting that not only did South Dakota keep schools open but also emphatically rejected the idea of any restrictions on activity at all. Yet their scores dropped.

With fifteen days left in the 2022 mid-term elections, the DCCC has still not reserved any television time and has spent relatively little money to protect Malinowski, a party loyalist who got the short end of the straw in a new congressional map drawn by Democrats.

I see the same block figure, which for those interested is here.

Scores dropped in 43 states or possessions, and stayed in the same range in only 10.

Rather than looking at absolute scores relative to the prior year (2019) for the states, it’s instructive to instead look at how the states performed relative to the national average. You can find that here.

Specifically, let’s look at the four largest states – CA, TX, FL, NY.

    Math grade 4:

CA and NY performed below the national average, with NY 7th from the bottom.
TX and FL performed above the national average, with FL # 4 in the nation. (Since you pointed out SD, I’ll point out that both Dakota states were in the above average group, and ND was # 6.)

    Math grade 8:

CA performed below the national average.
TX, FL, NY performed at the national average.
(ND, SD performed above the national average; SD was 4th in the nation.)

    Reading grade 4:

FL was 3rd in the nation.
CA, TX, NY performed at the national average, all with the same score. (Dakotas average, too.)

    Reading grade 8:

CA, FL, NY performed at the national average.
    TX below the national average.
(SD performed above the national average.)

Overall there’s a trend to better performance by TX and FL, and worse performance by CA and NY, over those four parameters I listed.

And there is definitely evidence that SD did better than the other states. Open schools and emphatic rejection of restrictions, perhaps.

“Bush’s approach in most situations seemed a reactive combination of calculations to avoid his father’s mistakes and to reject Clinton’s policies. This was especially clear in international affairs: in his first nine months he reversed Clinton’s policy toward China, proclaiming it no longer a ‘strategic partner’ but a ‘strategic competitor’; in the Middle East, by withdrawing U.S. involvement in the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians; toward Korea, by abandoning the negotiated accord that had frozen the North’s nuclear program and by humiliating President Kim of South Korea, who was promoting North-South reconciliation, during his March 2001 visit to the White House, contributing to a wave of anti-Americanism in a country that was among the staunchest American allies; by withdrawing U.S. support from the Kyoto treaty on global warming; and by forsaking Clinton’s efforts to address the dangers of international terrorism.

“During the transition between administrations, National Security Adviser Sandy Berger arranged several extensive briefings on this last subject for Bush’s incoming national security adviser, Condoleeza Rice, and others on the Bush team, including Vice President Cheney. One briefing lasted half a day. Berger told them that Osama bin Laden was an ‘existential threat’ and told them that he wanted ‘to underscore how important this issue is.’ In another briefing, Richard Clarke, head of counterterrorism in the NSC, the single most knowledgeable expert in the government, gave them a complete tutorial on the subject. In yet another briefing, CIA officials were brought in to go over all the intelligence available on terrorism.

“Don Kerrick, a three-star general and outgoing deputy national security adviser, overlapped for four months with the new Bush people. He submitted a memo for the new National Security Council warning of the danger of terrorism. ‘We are going to be struck again,’ he wrote. But as Kerrick explained to me, he received no answer to his memo. ‘They didn’t respond,’ he said. ‘They never responded. It was not high on their priority list. I was never invited to one meeting. They never asked me to do anything. They were not focusing. They didn’t see terrorism as the big megaissue that the Clinton administration saw it as. They were concentrated on what they thought were higher priorities than terrorism.’ The Principals meeting of national security officials took up terrorism only once, after constant pressure from Clarke, on September 4, 2001, and at that meeting they discussed using unmanned Predator drone spy aircraft, but no decision was made. ‘Unfortunately,’ said Kerrick, ‘September 11 gave them something to focus on.’”

If you Cherry pick data the argument still doesn’t hold.

Let’s look at the four largest states.

    At the 4th grade level:
In Math CA performed 4 pts below the national average….same as in 2019 (5 point drop)
TX performed 4 points above the national average…same as in 2019 (5 point drop)
FL performed 6 points above the National Average…same as in 2019 (5 point drop)
Only NY performed worse over the period 7 points under from 3. (10 point drop)

    In Reading
CA performed 2 points below the national average, up from three in 2019 (2 point drop)
NY preformed 2 points below, down from one (5 point drop)
Texas performed 2 points below, up from three (2 point drop)
Florida perfomed 9 points above, up from 6 (no change)

    At the 8th grade level
    In reading
CA performed 3 points below, up from five (6 point drop)
TX performed at the average, down from up one (7 point drop)
NY performed 1 point below, same as 2019 (7 point drop)
FL performed 2 points under, same as 2019 (8 point drop)

    Math
CA performed 3 points below, up from 5 (6 point drop)
NY performed 1 point below, no change (7 point drop)
TX performed at the average, up 1 (7 point drop)
FL performed 2 points below, unchanged (8 point drop)

So there is little to differentiate any of these large states statistically from pre to pandemic testing except 4th grade math just in NY and FL 4th grade reading.

How is it that TX and FL which did not shut down schools for a significant amount of time AND returned to in class school much earlier than CA and NY also tested worse in 2022 than in 2019 in general? If the cause is the fallacy of shutting down schools then clearly TX and FL would have performed at or near their 2019 levels.

This is not what happened. An overall drop in scores between 4-7 points was nearly universal in schools that did and did not shut down. So the cause must lie elsewhere.

Must be the gays and the CRT distracting all those kids. Or maybe declining funding and demonizing teachers and the well reported mass teacher shortage in many states is starting to show up in test scores. I can’t authoritatively say but we can demonstrate with the data that it wasn’t simply Covid shut downs.

(just for fun SD, math 4th grade 5 point drop, 8th 8 point drop.

Two hours ago @ 55 I wondered why the NRSC pulled the plug on Bolduc in NH.

Apparently some of the GOP were wondering as well. This posted a half-hour ago:

    35 mins ago – Politics & Policy
Scoop: National Republicans jump back into New Hampshire Senate race

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is recommitting resources into the New Hampshire Senate race, according to an NRSC official, just days after the Senate GOP’s top super PAC cancelled its spending on behalf of nominee Don Bolduc.

Why it matters: The strategic shift comes as new public polling shows Bolduc, a far-right, MAGA-aligned candidate, is within striking distance of Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) despite being dramatically outspent. An Emerson College poll released Monday showed Hassan leading Bolduc 48%-45% — within the margin of error.

Driving the news: The NRSC will be spending about $1 million on a new ad financed jointly between the committee and the Bolduc campaign. The spot will begin airing later this week.

Every stupid thing First Vegetable Joe Biden says or does helps flip NH to the GOP.

The big picture: Biden’s approval rating in the Emerson survey is a lowly 40%. The poll finds Biden and Trump statistically tied in a presidential campaign rematch — in a state Democrats have carried since 2004.
    …
What they’re saying: “Our polling, along with recent public polling, shows that this race is in the margin of error and winnable. The NRSC is proud to stand with General Bolduc. We’re going to win this race so Don Bolduc can bring real leadership back to this Senate seat,” NRSC chairman Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) tells Axios.

As residents of New Hampshire watch Fetterman disintegrate and watch the NY governor and a few NY House members crumble, they’ll have a front row seat when it happens to Hassan.

She’s One Of Congress’s Leading Progressives — Just Not In Her Own Office, Staffers Say
Former staffers who worked for Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a House Democrat who built her reputation on being a champion of workers, say her treatment of her staff was often inconsistent with her public image.

Despite the fact that Jayapal is one of the highest-profile progressives in DC and the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, 14 former staffers from throughout her nearly five years in Congress describe a dysfunctional and volatile workplace. There is, they said, a serious disconnect between how she talks about workers’ rights and how she treats her own staff.
    …
Since taking office, Jayapal has had one of the highest staff turnover rates in the House, due in large part, former employees said, to the unrealistic standards she sets. “It’s not sustainable to be able to stay for too long,” one said.

The resident of an Oklahoma City, Okla., home took action when an intruder allegedly forced his way inside on Sept. 30, 2022. Around 4 a.m., the resident was awakened by the sounds of movement inside the home, which he initially believed to be his niece. However, upon venturing out into the hallway to investigate, the resident discovered a stranger sitting quietly at the kitchen table. The stranger barely spoke for a while before, as the resident recalled, “He started walking around, mumbling, and went into my living room, knocked some pictures down, so I went into my bedroom and grabbed my gun.”
The resident then called to his niece as the stranger continued to stumble around, and his niece told him that she had no idea who the man was. As the intruder ran into a religious shrine and knocked it over, the resident pointed his firearm at the man. However, the intruder then began to advance on the resident. Hesitant, but fearing for his life in that instant, the resident fired on the man, wounding him. The stricken intruder was taken to a local hospital, where he was expected to recover from his injuries. (newson6.com, Oklahoma City, Okla., 08/01/2022)

Thomas Joyce of Randolph, Mass., became suspicious when he heard noises and observed a man walking up and down the back stairs to his house. Taking up his licensed firearms. HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
