With the discovery of Mike Webb’s badly decomposed body today, the mystery surrounding the former 710-KIRO host only deepens. His body was found under a tarp, stuffed in the crawl space of his Seattle home, weeks after being reported missing. The King County Medical Examiner’s office has determined that Webb died of multiple stab wounds. The talk-radio blog Blatherwatch is providing ongoing coverage.
I introduce each hour of my weekend show, proudly announcing that I am “bringing liberal political talk back to Newsradio 710-KIRO.” I always emphasize the word “back,” and in doing so, I’m always referring to Mike Webb, who sat in front of that very same microphone, infuriating local conservatives for nearly a decade.
But while I’m proud to carry on Webb’s legacy of speaking truth to power, I must confess that I rarely listened to his show. So Saturday night during the 8PM hour of my show, I’ll play a few clips of Webb at work, and unable to present a fitting tribute of my own, I’ll ask his friends and fans to call in with their own remembrances of Webb and his radio career.

I oftened listened to Mike Webb’s show when he was on Kiro. I am a straight, single female. In his early days, he infuriated me. Later, I found myself enjoying his nightly antics. He had a hard last few years with his conviction, the loss of his partner and the lost of his beloved dog. I lost track of Mike after he got fired from Kiro. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his demise. We all make mistakes. Whether or not you agree with his lifestyle or his politics, no one deserves to die like that. For those of you without a kind word to say….Have a heart, people. I can only hope your own demise is more sanitized.

It seems to me that one of the oddities of Mike’s program was that it was on at night, when most working people weren’t able to listen except in odd moments. Yet, in spite of people saying they didn’t listen to him, it seems to me that most people I knew caught his show whenever they could. Webb was not just an outspoken liberal in a liberal city awash with right wing talk, he was a liberal who said the things most of us cover up with “politeness.” What a pleasure it was to hear him lay it on the line. On top of it all, he was as smart as a whip and funny enough to make you laugh outloud. We don’t have anyone now as quick as he was. And when he wanted a light hour on rock music or some other hobby horse, the time was just as entrancing. He and Erin Hart made listening to KIRO worth the time. Their double loss hasn’t been recouped; his death is a tragedy, as is his troubled ending to his life. We still keep KIRO around for Dave Ross and Ron Reagan, but Dori is an off button for us, whereas we, like others, kept our hands on the on button for Mike Webb. RIP

#28 I understand you have been listening to the entire right wingnut radio world lie about the fairness doctrine’s re-introduction. No problem. You probably believe everything Rush says. You would have also believed everything Castro, Hitler, and Stalin said too. It is not your fault, you weren’t born with common sense, just anger.
The whole ideology the right winger radio liars support is a fraud at every single level. From spouting about being “conservative” when today’s Republicon Party is exactly the opposite, and they claim they support families, while doing everything in their power to impoverish 99% of America’s families. They have made the reality based community sick to their stomachs.
Rush Limpdik, and Hannjob have to lie on a minute by minute basis, and bring on guests to back up their lies, with their own lies just to keep the blatantly retarded anti democracy nazis that listen to their right wing radio shows full of hate, and anger.
By the way, there is no legislation to re-introduce the fairness doctrine. It is 100% a lie the rightie sleazebags made up to make their retarded nazi listeners angry. They do this all the time. Make a straw man argument, and scream in unison the GOP talking points memo script.
Lie, lie, lie, and lie some more is the regular right wing radio programming. The wingnuts eat it up like Ichiro bobblehead traitor dolls. Yep Ruuush, iz all dem immgrantz fawlt, yezitiz. Gotta keep dem gayz from gettin married tooo. Drooooool.
From listening to Hannity claims we found WMD’s in Iraq, to hearing Ollie North call Kerry a war criminal (when Ollie was the one convicted), the bile that is pumped out of these Benedict Arnold’s right winger radio sleazebags mouths is sickening to anyone that has half a clue, much less can accept reality.
What irks me the most is how you right wing retards screamed at the top of your lungs we had to hold Clinton accountable, because no one, not even the president is above the law. Then Bush, the pathetic lying bloodthirsty dirtbag commits felony, after felony, after felony, and tells blatant lie, after blatant lie, and you support him like he is your fuc*ing mommie.
I urinate on anyone that calls themselves a Republican these days. I just tell them it is rain. They deserve far worse. Far, far worse for what they have done to our country, and our constitution.
Got a question for the righties.
Can any of you morons explain what habeas corpus was?
And you are worried about the fairness doctrine. Every time a right wing hate merchant told a lie, they should be thrown in prison for propaganda, and spreading their pathetic lies. Then we wouldn’t need a fairness doctrine.
Just keep in mind. If too many radio stations run Schultz, and Air America, too many Americans will begin to understand how much damage today’s Republican Party, with the help of a handful of Democrats have done to our once great nation.
No one will buy the lies of the Right Wingers any more, and the corporate dirtbags that own the media corporations will not be able to sell their propoganda any more, and that will cost them dearly!
I say break up the monopolies, and to hell with the fairness doctrine. Having dirtbags like Murdoch in control of the media is insanely bad for our country.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Ms. Wilkerson is full of shit, and she knows it. She’s being paid to put a happy face on a fucking disaster! Regardless of whether Sen. Clinton or someone else is the Democratic nominee, polls clearly show the American public is now massively rejecting the lies, chicanery, fairytales, partisan manipulation, incompetence, and outright thievery of the hopelessly corrupt and inept Republican Party. She is also right about the federal government needing a top-to-bottom housecleaning to eject the thousands of unqualified Bush lackeys warming seats in federal agencies. The entire government is broken; absolutely nothing works in our country anymore. Air travel is a mess; our food isn’t safe; the economy is mismanaged; and, of course, the military is being sorely misused and ground into the dirt. It’s ludicrous for GOP shills to call Democrats “surrender monkeys” while Bush is getting his ass kicked in Iraq and Afghanistan, and coffins of American soldiers stream home in ever growing numbers with nothing to show for their valiant sacrifices. It’s not enough to say Bush appointees are unqualified; they are opposed to the very government and its principles which they are charged to manage, and their management reflects it. There’s a good reason why they operate in secrecy, hide documents, and refuse to testify under oath: Because their management of our government is not only negligent and ineffective, but also, in many instances, criminal in nature — and they, understandably, would rather enjoy the fruits of their corruption in Belize or Switzerland than languish in federal prisons.
One of the first things the new president has to do is replace the current crop of election fraudsters with an ENERGETIC crew of FEDERAL PROSECUTORS because the new U.S. Attorneys and their new staffs are going to be very busy.

Republicans Hate Libraries
Republicans tried to strip $150,000 from the Interior appropriations bill for renovation of Bremerton’s library, an FDR-era art deco building. http://tinyurl.com/28d4ql Never mind THEY passed 13,000 earmarks last year; the fucking cheapskates are jerking around the library for no better reason than it’s because it’s in a Democratic district. Republicans even play politics with libraries!

Roger at 11:53 PM
No, Roger, they don’t actually hate libraries. They just have no idea of what they’re for.
From their perspective, a big bonfire is so much more effective a way of dealing with books, and they can make smores and sing campfire songs about war heroes like George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, and pass around nude photos of Ann Coulter.
The problem with libraries is that sometimes we let folks go into them and actually read the books, which encourages independent thought, research on the facts surrounding the neo-con talking points and other dangerous and un Amurikun activities.
Geez, Roger. Some of those libraries actually contain copies of the Constitution. The last thing any of the neo-cons want is for people to start reading subversive material like that.

Newsweek Columnist: Cheney Manipulated Bush, Wrecked GOP
In a remarkable column in this week’s Newsweek magazine, Eleanor Clift writes:
“Pushed forward by George and Barbara Bush, who had no confidence in their eldest son, Cheney was supposed to serve as the ghost of Bush Senior hovering around the White House. Cheney took on the job and with, George W.’s acquiescence, made himself the locus of power. What nobody anticipated is the extent to [Cheney] would insinuate himself into everything–and the devastating consequences of his influence, particularly the Iraq War.”
Clift quotes long-time Cheney confidante Vic Gold as describing Cheney as a “mega-maniacal paranoid” who “captured the Bush presidency and helped bring the Republican Party to the brink of ruin.”
Vic Gold, according to Clift, “doesn’t really think” Bush is “dumb,” but says Bush “can be manipulated” and calls him “the weakest president in my memory.”
Quoted under Fair Use; to read the entire remarkable article you should buy the magazine and support its advertisers, but you Republican freeloaders can read it free on Newsweek’s web site here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19.....ek/page/0/
Roger Rabbit spews:
It never ceases to amaze me how rightys think they can get roads and bridges without paying for them. The only logical explanation is they hope someone else will pay for them so they can use them free.
Republicans = freeloaders
Roger Rabbit spews:
One of the most amazing spectacles in Washington politics is listening to eastern Washington Republicans bleating about paying taxes for Seattle infrastructure.
The reverse is true. Those counties are too lightly populated to pay enough taxes for the infrastructure THEY have. Their roads and schools are heavily subsidized by urban taxpayers. King County not only pays for its own infrastructure but IN ADDITION exports over $125 million a year of gas taxes to other counties.
Virtually every Republican county in the state is a net importer of gas tax revenue — and full of whiny people bitching about the taxes OTHER PEOPLE pay for THEIR roads and schools!
Republicans = 2 year olds
Roger Rabbit spews:
Union Fireman knows nothing about the gasoline market. A lower gas tax would NOT result in lower pump prices. If Democrats hadn’t raised the gas tax to pay for badly needed roads and bridges, that money would simply go to the oil companies as profit. That’s because pump prices are set by supply and demand. Lowering the gas tax by 9 cents would push up demand, which would push up prices to equal today’s pump price, or possibly even higher.
Raising the gas tax is justified from another standpoint. The gas tax is not indexed for inflation, so it has to be raised periodically simply to maintain existing purchasing power. The price of everything else rises with inflation, so why shouldn’t gas taxes rise to keep up with inflation, too?
In addition, the population of our state is expanding, and the old level of taxation — even if raised to adjust for inflation and the reduced purchasing power of a penny — would only maintain existing roads and would not expand our road system to accomodation the growing population. That money has to come from somewhere, and it obviously should come from those using the roads.
Union Fireman is a sophomoric dolt who thinks with his dick instead of the brain God gave him.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Many people don’t realize improved vehicle fuel efficiency is a major threat to state transportation revenues. Let’s say people switched from SUVs to high-mileage hybrids that get twice the mileage. You still have the same number of vehicles on the road, and still need the same amount of roads, but now you’re collecting only half as much gas tax. What the state obviously will have to do is make up for the loss of gas tax revenues from decreased gasoline sales by either raising the gas tax or some other vehicle tax, such as license fees. Roads and bridges don’t cost less simply because the vehicles using them burn less fuel and therefore pay less fuel tax.

You are right to a point; however, it seems that vehicles with improved mileage are likely to be smaller and lighter than traditional vehicles, so there will be a bit less stress on the roads than there is with today’s vehicles. Still, I think the best we could hope for from a tax standpoint is that tax revenues vs. maintenance stays flat, or maybe maintenance doesn’t fall behind as quickly.

If Republicans had their way there would be no libraries. In fact they would like for you to buy a new copy of every book you want to read every time you want to read it, and make it a Federal crime to share books.

My husband and I often listened to Mike’s show on KIRO after we went to bed at night, plus we heard him in person at several of the KIRO town meetings. He always said that he loved the freedom afforded being on the air late at night, after the kids were asleep. While we did not agree with everything he said, he was always entertaining and worth listening to. What a passionate guy! We loved that he made us think and brought up topics not covered by the mainstream media. Since KIRO fired him and let Erin Hart and the “Professor” go, we no longer listen to that station.
Spent the last half hour surfing blog responses to Mike’s death. Was shocked to find so many people spewing hatred towards him even though he was brutally murdered! His death sure aroused intense emotions, even from people who had never heard him on the air and profess to be religious…must be the Christian way. (I was brought up not malign the departed but apparently it’s ok if the recently deceased is a cursed liberal). Just hope his family isn’t too unset by all the mean-spirited dribble.
We are sure that a person as caring and concerned as Mike will forgive those who speak poorly of him, as he is now in a better place.

Tangled Webb spews:
On Saturday I caught the end of Al ‘Goldy’ Goldstein’s act on KIRO. Screw, baby.
Goldy was in full First Amendment free screech mode, ranting that the half-vast right wing conspiracy has taken over Kos & Arianna’s Huff’n’Puffington Post, leaving Goldy as the only unabashed liberal left unbashed. Then he shrieked about the half-vast mad bomber conspiracy, Bush in a burqa pretending to blow up Britain so he can turn Gordon Brown into a melamine poodle. Then, using her “own words,” he shrieked some more about Ann Coulter.
Caller Andy tried helpfully to set Goldstein, um, straight … that Ann’s own words were taken almost word-for-word from left-wing plutocrat Bill Maher (a point carefully made on this blog last week). So Goldy went into a full-blown half-mad rant about killing the conservative Supreme Court. Which unjust justice should we poison first? Ann Coulter, after all, wrote about spicing up John Paul Steven’s entree with Chinese toothpaste, and why should only the Right get away with killer invective?
(But sane listeners surely remember that, more than ten years ago, sensitive compassionate leftist Julianne Malveaux called for the poisoning of Clarence Thomas. Coulter was using Malveaux’s own words, changing only the punchline, so Goldy’s way late to the party. He’s clueless as usual. Oy, and by the way, remember when Tom DeLay questioned unhinged judicial activism? The left went wild, accusing conservatives of attacking the independence of the courts. So it was, like, so droll when Goldy started screaming about the Supremes destroying America’s diversity and wrecking Seattle’s schools.)
All things considered (and I’m sure that Goldy, who counts neo-socialist Dave Ross as a centrist also counts the left’s subsidized NPR as centrist) it was a wild ride. My oh my.
It was Al ‘Goldy’ Goldstein’s homage to Mike Webb. And Goldy’s unhinged hysteria and paranoia were surely a right-on relevant eulogy. Unlike Shiers’ sickly gig on Friday, where the “nice” “kind” “helpful” Webb was extolled because Shiers said in almost so many words that honest callers would be cut off, Goldy’s was a nut-case tribute to the truth: Webb, rest in peace, was a lost violent soul. He was cattle-mutilation dreamland from the left’s farthest fringe of nightmare lunacy. And, with a 50-50 chance of being right, he was right about Iraq being wrong.
(Back to Shiers, uber geek. Imagine if the same sacharine sanitized standard had been applied to, say, Falwell. If only polite things could be said. The compassionate left, who for days danced, in public and in print on Falwell’s corpse, would have been uncharacteristically speechless. Or imagine if Shiers had applied the Falwell standard to Webb, allowing somebody to channel leftist invective by saying, say, that Webb had stabbed himself to death to collect the insurance, a big pile of money from Geico.)
Which brings us back to Coulter. Surely it’s now obvious even to the oblivious left that Coulter’s ugly act is to use your own unhinged hatred against you. I mean, why should only Mike Webb or Mike Malloy or Al ‘Goldy’ Goldstein have all the ugly fun? Why would Falwell, who every few years would say something stupid, be pilloried in public while Webb or Malloy, sayiing something stupid every minute the Mike mics were on, got paychecks from corporate America? Of course nobody gets Coulter’s jokes — sort of like Stephanie MIller calling Rush a racist because he repeated and replayed Teddy Kennedy’s drunken laff-riot rant about “Osama Obama” — so she keeps shooting herself in the foot. And selling books.
Which brings us back to Webb. He made me nervous to be a Bill of Rights absolutist. No, not the First Amendment; the Second. Although I thank mean-spirited Webb for making me a mean-spirited conservative, it’s still troubling for us proponents of a living, breathing Constitution thatsomebody like Webb could read Second Amendment language about a well-regulated militia, and think that he was one. America’s worst nightmare: an America-hating leftist with a gun.
Apres Goldy, Saturday nite, there was Turi. In her muddled maundering way she slapped Goldy down, I think, for his shrieked assertions that gasoline, propane, and a few thousand nails are no big deal, except for the fact that Cheney’s to blame. Then Turi, in her muddled maudering way, talked about Mike Webb’s private life. Why didn’t the media let him have one? Why didn’t they let him be privately crazy?
Aside from the fact that Seattle’s poodle press accorded Webb every courtesy that they never gave to Mike Siegel, Mr. Webb chose not to have privacy. He rubbed our noses in his private life. He rammed it down our throats. And he got a gun.
