KING5/SurveyUSA: Sen. Maria Cantwell 56%, Mike!™ McGavick 39%. Check out the crosstabs. Just a robo-poll, but nothing for the McGavick folks to cheer about.
Oh, and on a somewhat related topic, TPMmuckraker reports that the US Senator who put a secret hold on a bill that would have created a public, searchable database of all federal grants and contracts (you know, making it easier for taxpayers to figure out how their money is being spent,) turns out to be none other than Mike!™’s good friend, Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska.
Hmm.
Just this past week Mike!™ wrote on his own campaign blog:
This is a sad state of affairs when a senator (or senators) secretly prevent legislation to remove secrecy. The American people have a right to know how their money is being spent. We need senators who are willing to hold their colleagues accountable for this sort of thing, regardless of party.
So… the best way to hold Sen. Stevens accountable is to, um, elect his friend Mike!™ to the Senate?

Sen. Frist: “Mike? Mike who?”
Mike: “Mike McGavick. You know. Mike! The Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Washington Sate.”
Sen. Frist: “We have a Senate candidate in Washington State?”
Mike: “Uh, Yes Sir, we do. It’s me.”
Sen. Frist: “Isn’t that Cantwell’s seat?”
Mike: “Correct, Sir.”
Sen. Frist: “Oh, sorry, buddy. I didn’t realize we had found a sacrificial lamb, err, stooge, err, candidate to run for that seat.”
Mike: “Well, yes Sir, we did, and its me.
Sen. Frist: “Oh, I remember now. You’re the guy that got all the Safeco money. It took Rove and a team of lawyers a month to figure out how to turn that campaign contribution into a ‘bonus’. “
Mike: “Yes, Sir, that’s me. And I intend to earn the money when I get to the Senate, Sir.”
Sen. Frist: “Well, Mike, that’s what was intended. Make sure Safeco gets it’s money worth. Now, what can I do for you? Make it quick. We’re going out to dinner, and I intend to stiff the waitress on the tip….”
Mike: “Well, Sen. Frist, that’s kind of what I was going to call you about. “
Sen. Frist: “Oh?”
Mike: “Well, you see, I was making the whole minimum wage/sales tax deduction/estate tax repeal a campaign issue against Cantwell. You know, telling voters that she voted against the sales tax deduction bill, and it will cost them money.”
Sen. Frist: “Well, that’s why we did it! It’s a win-win proposition for us. We knew that there was no way in hell the minimum wage bill would pass with the estate tax repeal added to it, so it gave us a free pass to toss in a few more “hand grenades” while we are at it. This one was aimed right at Cantwell. We already had the ads scripted before the bill even made it out of the house”.
Mike: “Yes Sir, and I appreciate it. But see, now I’m in a bit of a bind.
Sen. Frist: “How can you be in a bind? We gave it to you on a silver platter! What could be easier?!”
Mike: “Well, see, when I was working for Slade Gorton, I was his campaign manager, and I made this misleading negative ad about his opponent….”
Sen. Frist: “So? That’s what you were expected to do!”
Mike: “Well, I kind of apologize for it….”
Sen. Frist: “YOU WHAT???!!!!! WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO A STUPID THING LIKE THAT????!!!!!”
Mike: “Well, they told me that I needed to be “more human”, and that if I apologized for some minor things, it would make it more difficult for my opponent to criticize me for it….”
Sen. Frist: “Well, I hope you didn’t do something stupid and apologize for anything else, like getting arrested for drunk driving in another state where nobody knows about it…”
Mike: “Well, Sir, I know you are busy so I’d better get right to the point.
Sen. Frist: “Please do (getting impatient).”
Mike: “Well, it seems that since I apologized for one misleading ad, I’m getting a lot of heat from the papers about running the current misleading ad. What with Cantwell being the main sponsor of the legislation to continue the State Sales Tax Deduction and all, it IS kind of misleading to argue that she voted against it in the bill we loaded up with poison pills….”
Sen. Frist: “Well, screw the papers! Most of our voters don’t read anyway. Just keep hammering away with those ads!”
Mike: “Well, its been pointed out pretty clearly that if I really wanted the State Sales Tax Deduction, all I had to do was ask you to have the Republicans in the House vote for Cantwell’s bill.”
Sen. Frist: “So? I’m not sure I like the way this conversation is heading….”
Mike: “ So, if I ask you to have the Republicans approve the Senate bill, and they do it, then I can take credit for saving the Sales Tax Deduction!”
Sen. Frist: “You IDIOT! We don’t give a rat’s ass about the sales tax deduction! It doesn’t really affect our base anyway, it’s pocket change to them. The income tax is the only thing that concerns them! If we extend the sales tax deduction, then it might make it harder to get more income tax cuts for our rich contributors! Hell, even my own state is going to be hurt by the expiration of the state sales tax deduction, but you don’t see me trying to save it, do you????”
Mike: “But, I don’t think I can win if we don’t do it….”
Sen. Frist: “Look, Mike, I thought you were smarter than that. There is no way in hell you are going to win anyway. I’m surprised you even took the job. But just keep hammering away with those ads. Like I said, most of our supporters can’t read newspapers anyway, so it is bound to have some effect. Even though it won’t get you elected, it might bring in more contributors from Washington state we can add to our database for national fund-raising.
Just like that election challenge to your governor’s race. We knew it was all bogus, but we got our folks so riled up by blaming the Democrats for vote-stealing, the money is just pouring in! It was well worth the money we spent on it. Puddybud at 44: In the spirit of detant, I’ll be gentle also.
Sure the Democrats attacked the President in the 2004 primaries. But there IS an important distinction. Their donars were all restricted in the amount they could donate to their campaigns by the Federal Campaign Limits. In that respect they, and the President, were on an equal playing field (at least legally).
But the “millionaires exemption” takes into account that a candidate is not restricted in putting his own money into a campaign. When that happens, the other candidates are allowed to increase the limits their donars are allowed to give accordingly. It is designed to create a more level playing field, and avoid giving the rich an undue advantage.
In this election, McGavick has already put 2 million dollars of his own money into the campaign. Now for the moment, lets ignore the issue of whether this is his money, or a Safeco campaign contribution. Instead, lets concentrate on the fact that a 2 million dollar contribution would trigger the “millionaire amendment”, allowing his opponants donars to give larger amounts to the opponant’s campaign. Cantwell’s campaign sought a ruling from the FEC to that effect, which would have allowed her individual donars to give a greater amount to her campaign (I think the increased limit would be $4,200 each).
But here is where McGavick took the following position with the FEC: Since McGavick is only running in the primary so far, his only opponants are his three Republican challengers. Therefore, the only ones able to take advantage of the increased donation limits are his Republican challengers and himself, not Cantwell.
The FEC is apparantly issuing a ruling which will agree with McGavick’s position, saying that only if he uses the money AFTER the primary will the Millionaire’s Amendment apply to the Cantwell campaign.
The result is that McGavick, and his Republican challengers, can all raise much more money from individual donars than Cantwell, but they can all use that money to attack Cantwell. Indeed, there is an incentive for them to spend all that money before the primary.
But if McGavick’s attack ads are all directed at Cantwell, and none against his Republican opponants, doesn’t that reveal that his position before the FEC was a lie? Doesn’t the fact that Laura Bush came out to raise money for McGavick, and not for his primary opponants, show that the Primary is a mere formality, with no real substance?
So the situation is completely different, because of the position Mike McGavick has taken regarding the Millionaire’s Amendment.
That’s what gets me about McGavick. He tries to come across as a “nice guy”, and I expect he really believe he is a “nice guy”, a “straight shooter”. But then he takes conflicting positions depending upon what position benefits him most at the time, and makes conflicting statements to different people, and expects not to be called on it, and is suprised when people do. To him, that is “uncivil”. For the rest of us, it is honesty.

August 24, 2006:
“ Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll in Washington shows Senator Maria Cantwell (D) leading challenger Mike McGavick (R) 46% to 40% (see crosstabs). “
“ As a result of this poll, Rasmussen Reports is shifting the Washington Senate race from Democrat to Leans Democrat in our Balance of Power summary. A month ago, the seat was more solidly in the Democratic column as Cantwell enjoyed an 11-point lead to six. “
“ While the incumbent Senator can take some comfort from the general Democratic leanings of the state, it should also be noted that Cantwell has not reached the 50% level of voter support since February. Support below that level is a concern for any incumbent and suggests that McGavick is not out of the running yet. “
Our July survey was conducted following a Cantwell ad blitz. At that time, she enjoyed 88% support from Democrats in the state. In the current survey, that support has slipped back to 82% of Democrats (that’s back to where she was in June). The Senator’s position on Iraq has caused some discontent among the left wing of her party. Meanwhile, McGavick has made gains among GOP voters with 84% saying they’ll support his campaign. The previous two polls showed that number holding steady at 80%.
rhp6033 spews:
PuddyBud at 55: You’ll get no argument from me that “the standard was set long ago”. The rich have always had an advantage in running for office.
Cantwell did loan a large amount of her own money to fund her 2000 campaign, but also rejected PAC money, so it was a bit of an offset. The Millionaire Amendment was not in effect at that time – it was signed into law March 27, 2006.
Source: http://www.fec.gov/pages/broch.....troduction
And Kerry and Dean certainly had the option of choosing not to accept federal money for their 2004 campaign, and thereby avoid any spending limits. Again, it is a bit of an offset – refuse federal money but get to raise more in contributions, or accept federal money and be limited in contributions? I’m sure they penciled it out in advance and determined which was most adventagious to them, but at least they chose one, and didn’t try to get the benefit of both positions. They couldn’t outright limit contributions, because the U.S. Supreme Court said it is part of our First Amendment rights to contribute any amount we want to a political candidate. The government can only make it adventagious for a politician to limit the amount they will accept.
My problem with McCain is that he is not making a choice. He is trying for the best of all worlds, by taking one position with the FEC (that he is only running against his Republican opponants), another with the public (by advertising only against Cantwell), while still remaining “eligible” for federal funding, but keeping Cantwell’s contributions limited to a lower amount than his own – all at the same time.
Certainly some of the fault might be found in the wording of the law, which perhaps should have been more tightly drafted. But my problem is with a candidate for public office who is, in effect, being two-faced: saying to the FEC one thing, and then acting completely differently.

The following is a repost. I think it’s appropriate here based on the tag line I copied above.
“The Democrat Party died yesterday in Hartford, Connecticut. Present when this venerable institution breathed its last were a minority of the Democrats in the Nutmeg State. The Party was the child of the Republican-Democrat Party, and the Anti-Federalist Party. It leaves no known descendants. However, political parties sometimes spawn children many years after their deaths.
Is that verdict too harsh? The leaders of the Democrat Party in Washington, New York, and elsewhere, are not admitting even to a serious illness. It’s difficult to conduct a proper Irish wake when on-lookers insist on prodding the deceased to sing and dance.
These major political parties have held great power – usually including the Presidency and control of one or both Houses of Congress – only to disappear from the political stage, remembered in history books that no one reads any more: The Federalists, the Anti-Federalists, the Republican-Democrats….
Let’s review. The Democrats hold Jefferson-Jackson Dinners annually, claiming Jefferson as their progenitor. Crack open a history book. Read Jefferson’s First Inaugural Address. He founded the Republican-Democrat Party, which existed only during his two terms as President. Not only was he not a Democrat, he would have run screaming into the night rather than accept the levels of national power and taxation that modern Democrat espouse.
The Whigs, the Union Democrats, and the Liberal Republican Parties are also in the political graveyard, along with lesser-known cousins like the Anti-Masonic Party (held the first national political convention), the Know-Nothings, and the Progressives (the actual party which ran Teddy Roosevelt in 1912).
Since most reporters are grossly ignorant of American political history, they are unaware that political parties have often died, and others were born in their place. Not knowing that, they’re also unaware of the common cause of such political death. It happens when any party gets permanently crosswise from the American people on a critical issue. The Democrat Party has just crossed that divide.
Mind you, I am not making a brief for Joe Lieberman, personally. I liked and respected him when we were classmates at Yale, and when we worked together on The Yale Daily News. I supported him financially when he ran defeated Lowell Weicker for Senate. I lost all respect for Joe when he chose his party over his country, backing away from the Clinton Impeachment. (Because I thought Joe thoroughly honest, I’d written six months prior that I expected him to be the “honest Senator” as Goldwater was concerning President Nixon a quarter century before.)
But, when Joe came to that unique point where he alone could influence American history, for better or worse, Joe chose worse. No, I am not saying that the Democrat Party is dead because it failed to renominate Joe Lieberman for Senate from Connecticut. I’m saying the Party is dead because of who it did nominate, and how, for that slot.
Ned Lamont was the choice of the Connecticut Democrats. He’s a wealthy man who bought his nomination. This is a sad but spreading phenomenon in both parties. One reason I tend to distrust filthy-rich people who buy their way into office – regardless of their politics or party – is that they are disconnected from real life.
For instance, Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey simply forgave a half-million dollar mortgage on a house he bought for a lady friend. Since time immemorial, men have given gifts to women And it is true that Governor Corzine’s one-time bed mate had the additional advantage of being head of a large public service union. Still, anyone who can drop half a million dollars without blinking, for sex, politics, or both, is not living in the same world as I, or almost anyone I know.
Such people simply are not touched by worry about paying taxes, putting up with government regulation, or facing the myriad of real issues of real people. That brings us back to Ned Lamont. A prime mover in putting him into office was MoveOn.org. Rather than describe that outfit, I encourage every reader to go to their website. Read a sample of their policies; decide for yourself whether they are barking mad moonbats. While you’re at it, read up on George Soros, the eminence grise behind MoveOn, and various other financial puppet masters.
On foreign policy, Lamont follows former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, who in turn is Neville Chamberlain in drag. We are in a war. The war will to continue – and perhaps get worse – until America takes the lead worldwide, and does what is necessary to win that war. We can only hope the price for Lamont’s politics will be lower than the 50 million who died for Neville Chamberlain’s politics.
Does this assessment change, if Joe Lieberman gets elected as an “independent” come November? Not in the least. The mere nomination of Lamont shows the cut-and-run Murtha disease has now infected more than half of the Democrat Party. The only remaining questions are, how much time will it take, and how many tens of thousands, or millions of Americans, most of them civilians, will have to die before the Democrat Party as it now exists is actually buried in the history books. Only then can a more honest and competent party take its place – as has happened so often before in American history.

Something’s wrong with immigration protests
BY BRIDGET JOHNSON, Columnist
THE city of Maywood – a 1.2-square-mile town with an official population of just over 28,000 about eight miles south of downtown Los Angeles – is a pocket for illegal immigrants, lauded by immigrant advocates and decried by detractors. In this 96 percent Hispanic town, signs advising pedestrians to use crosswalks are printed in Spanish and English, and many storefronts’ signs are in Spanish as well. The last census says 55 percent of residents are foreign-born, and 92 percent speak a language other than English at home.
Earlier this year, the Maywood City Council passed a resolution opposing the Sensenbrenner immigration bill after it passed in the House, and the town was designated the first “sanctuary city” in the state. The city also nixed police checkpoints so as not to net illegal immigrants without driver’s licenses, and disbanded its traffic division for the same reason.
On Saturday, Save Our State showed up to protest that policy in front of Maywood City Hall, numbering several dozen with “Don’t tread on me” and American flags. “Not anti-Hispanic, anti-illegal alien,” read one sign; “Maywood is part of the U.S. and its elected officials need to act accordingly,” read another. One man held a small sign that read “traitors,” and the group was fronted by a banner championing Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo for president. (“Tancredo? Who’s that?” a confused counter-demonstrator asked me.)
Police in riot gear manned a buffer zone on blocked-off Slauson Avenue, surrounding the anti-illegal-immigration demonstrators who were being faced down by a few hundred counter-protesters and neighboring residents who pulled out Mexican flags and joined the event. I had gotten wind of a socialist organization calling people out for the demonstration, hence showed up to find the counter-protest to be an eclectic mix of white guys in Che T-shirts and Latinos – wearing shirts ordering people to not call them Latino or Hispanic (too European), but Mexican – denouncing white people.
And if immigration proponents have been trying to pass off reconquista claims – the belief that immigrants want to take back “Aztlan” – as paranoid, these protesters weren’t helping. One sign proclaimed “Stolen continent” – yet displayed two continents, North and South America. “White racists this is our continent” read one sign. Another said, “We will never live in peace until we get the European squatters off our lands.”
I squatted in the middle of the counter-protesters for a couple

of hours, reading their literature, listening to them talk, trotting next to protesters trying to circumvent police lines and confronting a fleet of motorcycle cops on the next side street over.
And if what I witnessed is what the immigration debate has come down to, it’s nothing less than vicious and hate-filled. This is where intelligent discourse flies out the window, and people start drawing territorial lines within communities.
A couple of times, unwelcome people came into the counter-protesting crowd to take photos or video, and were quickly surrounded by an angry crowd and pelted with water bottles and debris. Shouts of “you little white b-” were directed at a blond woman; a man yelled “Get out of here, this is our town” through a bullhorn to others.
Some wearing lucha libre masks and some with bandannas obscuring their faces, counter-protesters tried to get close to the SOS demonstrators by cutting down side streets leading to Slauson, and were angry when the cops were already there. Others manned the front lines with signs depicting Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Nazi, chanting “Minutemen! Resist! They’re the real terrorists.”
Toward the end of the counter-demonstration, those protesters raised the Mexican flag on the pole in front of the U.S. Post Office. Don Silva of SOS said one woman with his group was assaulted while trying to move through the opposition crowd, and some of their cars had tires slashed and were vandalized.
Maywood, regardless of its demographics, is still within the United States of America, and still falls under the laws of this country. Lobby against those laws if you feel they’re unfair; that’s the beauty of our system.
But when you have virulent protests that include a pre-teen boy yelling “f- that white b-” at a passing fair-skinned woman – me – something is seriously wrong. Especially when it comes from the side holding a banner that proclaimed “Say NO to racism.”

Continuation of 61: Here we get into my main objection to McGavick: He is two-faced. I’m sure he will think this is being too personal, or too critical, or whatever, but consider the evidence:
(1) He tells the FEC he is only running against his Republican primary opponants, but all his money and effort is directed against Cantwell, and none at his opponants.
(2) He says he is running for “civility” in politics, and that he is sorry for a misleading add he ran a decade ago, but he continues to run an add which is blatantly misleading in the current campaign.
(3) For now, we won’t even discuss the 28 million from Safeco – its just too big a subject for me to get involved in right now.

Where is Green Aaron Dixon?
Where is Libertarian Bruce Guthrie?
There is so much dissatisfaction with the D’s and R’s these days, that third party candidates are going to take a bigger chunk of the vote.
These two candidates together might account for 10% of the final vote.
Without taking this effect into account, these polls are useless.

I think we need to set up to “challenge” voters in the republican-controlled areas like the righties did to Dems last time around. We should adopt the same tactics that Steffy did and file the challenges right before the election so people in the republican counties don’t have time to respond. I also believe we should get groups together to go through the voter registrations in the eastern counties to look for dupes, dead people, etc. Since the right wing counties never had to undergo that kind of scrutiny I am betting we could find lots of fraud over there and perhaps enough to help Peter win.

Threaten litigation over Christian Cross on county seal”
“by

La Voz de Aztlan”
“Los Angeles, Alta California – May 27, 2004 – (ACN) Those nefarious Jews are at it again! The same clique of Talmudic Jews who want to remove ““One Nation Under God”” from the Pledge of Allegiance now have targeted the Christian Cross that is part of the ““Official Seal of the County of Los Angeles. The Jewess Ramona Riptson, wife of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals judge that voted to remove God from the pledge, and who is also Director of the Jewish ACLU of Southern California has just given the County Board of Supervisors an ultimatum to ““REMOVE”” the cross from its seal or face a massive suit in the Jewish dominated judicial system of California.”
“If the Jews are successful in forcing the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to remove the Christian Cross from the county seal, a consortium of Jewish businesses are already at the ready to profit from it. It will take millions of dollars to change the stationary, business cards, the logos on buildings and vehicles and on many other items. They will be ready to siphon even more dollars from unsuspecting taxpayers. This is one reason why people around the world are becoming increasingly impatient with the Jews and probably one reason why Adolf Hitler acted the way he did.”

Yeah, Daddy, we shouldn’t jump to any conclusions. Moslem immigration has worked out well in Europe, and diversity is a nation’s greatest strength. Just ask the former USSR, the former Czechoslovakia, and the former Yugoslavia. We probably need more Moslems here, particularly those from progressive places like Afghanistan. I’ll bet the French are glad they took in a few million multi-culturals, and if they start burning cars here like they did in France at least traffic won’t be so bad.
