As has long been the norm in Seattle, whenever a local elected official has a big-vision issue to promote, the first constituency he must sell it to are the ornery, partisan drunks. But since the county council wasn’t available last night, King County Executive Ron Sims dropped by Drinking Liberally instead, and eloquently pitched his vision of a re-imagined Seattle Center.
Ron worked the appreciative crowd with his personal mix of schmoozing, hugging, and bully pulpit thumping, and then set the standard for all savvy politicians by joining us for our weekly podcast… now available for your listening pleasure.
It’s not quite our usual freewheeling conversation — we stuck mostly to local issues — but neither is it your typical interview with an elected official… and I’m guessing Ron had a lot more fun (and a couple more drinks) then he usually has with KUOW’s Steve Scher.

You can say that again! To prevent the GOP liars from misleading anyone, here once again are the FACTS about King County’s military/overseas ballots:
1. King County mailed ALL military ballots on or before the federal deadline of October 8, which was 3 1/2 weeks before the election.
2. If this wasn’t enough time for some voters, the fault lies with timing of the primary, not King County Elections, because the ballots couldn’t be printed until the September primary returns were counted and certified.
3. Efforts by Democratic legislators in the 2005 legislative sessions to move the primary to an earlier date were defeated by Republicans.
4. Of 15,829 military/overseas ballots issued, 12,694 were returned.
5. In addition, 1,342 Federal Write In Ballots were received.
6. The military/overseas turnout was nearly identical to the civilian turnout (81.7% vs. 82.9%).
7. Of the regular military/overseas ballots received, all but 220 were counted, and of these, only 16 weren’t counted because they were received too late.
8. 1,031 of the Federal Write In Ballots were validated and counted.
9. Total number of disqualified military/overseas ballots: 550
10. Because King County doesn’t differentiate between military and civilian overseas ballots, it is possible that NONE of the 16 late ballots were military.

Two former aides to Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) have alleged that he repeatedly violated House ethics rules.

When it comes to polling, the devil is in the detail:
In its classic “fair and balanced” tradition, CBS slanted in favor of Democrats its poll that found Bush has a 34 percent approval rating and a 59 percent disapproval rating, an all-time high for a CBS poll.
On the bottom of the PDF version of the poll (page 18) it says how many Democrats versus Republicans were contacted.
“Total Republicans” contacted: 272 unweighted and 289 weighted.
“Total Democrats” contacted: 409 unweighted and 381 weighted.
“Total Independents” contacted: 337 unweighted and 348 weighted.
Brent Baker also noted how CBS failed to highlight a key portion of its poll on the Feb. 27 “CBS Evening News.” 66 percent of respondents thought the media devoted “too much time” to Cheney’s hunting accident.
I have little faith in any polls these days….
Just tell me what you want the outcome to be and a poll can be designed to create that outcome. It’s all about the assumptions, polling criteria and HOW the questions are asked.

Let’s look at voter registration numbers then.
2000 estimates (most recent I could find)
204 million eligible voters
63 million registered Democrats
47 million registered Republicans
32 million registered as independents or with minor party
62 million not registered
So, nationally in 2000, Democrats comprised 44.4% of registered voters while they only comprise 37.4% of CBS polling sample.
I suppose you could chalk up the difference to 9/11 but traditionally, there have always been more self-identified Democrats than Republicans.

I thing Ron made some good points about the Seattle Center, and it’s not a bad idea to look it more than just Key Arena. A great deal of public bile has no doubt been raised about how those blankety-blank Sonics are trying to extort more money from Seattle to further expand an arena that they aren’t going to fill anyway unless they win some games. The Center as a whole is pretty shabby, although the Key really ain’t bad now (at least you don’t need an umbrella inside) and we’ve spiffed up the Opera House a bit–not that it was such a bad room before. Meanwhile, the surrounding neighborhood has re-invented itself several times over since 1962.
At the same time, people in these parts don’t like something too big and costly shoved at them at once, and the Disney episode referenced above demonstrated the risk of “not invented here” syndrome. There’s no reason it has to be done all at once, and it would be nice not to throw out all the baby with the bathwater. I’ll bet some of those groups that rent the northwest meeting rooms have real merit, just not a lot of money. Proposing the transformation of that corner into “Convention Center 2” would leave the question of where those folks would go, not to mention the inevitable political collision with the downtown proponents of Convention Center 1.
