Why are so many Michigan cities and towns in fiscal trouble?
“The Republican run state of Michigan is busy taking over towns and cities, disbanding the mayors and city councils, and installing their own chosen dictators.
“First, they cut taxes for the corporations and wealthy, and this loss of revenue forces towns into fiscal collapse. Then this economic desperation allows Governor Snyder to institute a sort of financial martial law.
“Michigan Republicans have given themselves the unilateral authority to replace locally elected officials with ’emergency financial managers’. EMFs have complete authority to fire elected officials, close schools, void union contracts and even sell public property.”
And what’s their motive?
“Benton Harbor was the first to be seized, and the town’s beach front park was sold to a corporate crony who plans to develop it into a ritzy golf course.
“Flint has been taken over, and it looks like Detroit is next. Other governors in Republican states such as Wisconsin are pushing for similar measures. This isn’t democracy — it’s Republican totalitarianism.”

If anything McKenna will cut services to the wet side and increase handouts to the Republican base. Perhaps he has this in mind for his education agenda.

If after watching the way Republicans have acted when in power (War Crimes, Warrant-less Ass Searches, Michigan dictatorship, etc, etc, etc…) and don’t understand that to save the nation of the people, for the people and by the people “requires first the complete destruction of today’s Republican Party”, you’re not paying attention.

I guess the conservatives should have chose their enemies better. “1984” and “None Dare Call It Conspiracy” were required reading in HS English. Conservatives have become the kind of totalitarian dictatorship organization I remember the conservatives of my youth warning us about. The titles of the organizations are different, but the actions are the same. The actions of the Michigan Republicans display this.

The change is not in them, but in us.
For the past 30 or more years we’ve allowed those who would do us harm for their own reasons to do what they want. We’ve forgotten that that their interests and our interests are not only dissimilar, but diametrically opposed.

re 10: The principle of political jiu jitsu for today’s Democrats would be to enter ‘bi-partisan’ agreements with Republicans with no more intention of holding up their end of the bargain than the Republicans have.
The only advantage that Republicans have at this point in dealing with Democrats is the expectation that Democrats will try to fulfill their bi-partisan promises.
Speaking of wingnuttia, Walker signed a repeal of Wisconsin’s Equal Pay Enforcement Act. Wingnuts also announced today that there’s no Republican War on Women. If that’s the case, perhaps it’s a war on everybody but themselves.

Yes–McKenna needs to straightly answer whether he supports his party’s fascist, and I’m not using that word carelessly, doings in Michigan. Why in the hell is not everyone in that state totally up in arms?
