Being upset sells. Hate sells. Love is great but it doesn’t seem to motivate people like hate and being upset motivates people.
Without hate and being upset at someone would only leave us pretty much lonely. You might have your significant other and offspring to love and keep you company but even the most loving pretty much gets tired or takes for granted thier company.
Sure everyone needs some loving to survive, but it’s the hate that drives us to battle and interact with each other, at least that’s what it seems.
Without your advisories you pretty much don’t exist.
For instance, take this blog, the number of comments in a thread contrastly differ if the trolls are around. Without them it gets pretty quite here. Was or is that the problem at Sound Politics blog that everyone here talks about (I’ve only visited once and don’t remember if that is the right name of the blog). Over there, with every liberal banned, there isn’t much interaction or activity.
Seems like with Boob hiding in a cave, and the Ape waiting for the Boob to return, the comments here have gone down. Is it because of the holidays! Or did everyone decide they better start working before they get fired from thier jobs?
Fear and fight – it keeps us going. Love? Ehh, not really do we have to love. I think the only reason one man and one woman marries is so they can procreate, people are nothing more than a piece of equipment in a manufacturing facility.
Thank God for Rabbits.

@1,
I look at it a bit differently. Love and hate, or positive vs. negative, is all the same. The point is these are emotions.
Liberals in the 20th century came to emphasize rationalism over emotionalism in our political rhetoric. Developments in the study of psychology and cognitive science in the early and middle parts of the century gave rise to this. But it many ways this was a mistake.
People don’t actually form judgments or reach decisions in the ways we supposed they did. We are essentially emotional animals who then recruit rational reasons to support our emotional decisions. Liberals have to rediscover the positive emotional basis for our political philosophy, rediscover how to “sell” that, and then follow up with the rational support. Conservatives have kicked our asses in this area for decades. But their underlying flaw has been that the rational support has been almost entirely false. That is now catching up to them. Liberals have a way to go still. But since the rational support for our agenda is actually based in reality, we have a substantial long term advantage.

@1 A brief history of Sound Politics, commonly abbreviated on HA as “(u)SP,” which stands for “unSound Politics”:
Back in 2004, when Republicans lost a governor’s race by 133 votes, (u)SP was the most widely-read conservative blog in Washington. Republicans hurled all sorts of never-proven charges about the election, such as King County election officials were corrupt, their candidate “won” because he had more votes in the first two of three vote tallies (under law, only the final recount counts), etc. The GOP sued to overturn the result under Washington’s election contest law, and after spending more than $2 million on legal fees, their handpicked Republican judge in a forum-shopped Republican county awarded them 4 less votes than the final recount, increasing the Democratic victory margin from 129 to 133. Meanwhile, (u)SP’s proprietor, Stefan Sharansky (he spells it Sharkansky, and likes to be called “The Shark”), forced King County taxpayers to pay him $225,000 for minor technical violations of the Public Records Act, in connection with his demand for 600,000 pages of records from the King County Elections Office in connection with the disputed 2004 governor’s election. After Shark got his money, he faded into the background, and his blog, (u)SP, withered on the vine. Now, it’s essentially defunct.
Sharansky is some sort of IT guy, and his wife is a highly paid corporate lawyer. The two of them acquired notoriety for an incident at a restaurant. Their kid was running wild through the restaurant, making noise and disturbing other patrons, and a waitress did something the kid’s lousy parents failed to do: She told the little monster to be quiet. So The Shark complained to the manager, and the waitress — a single mom working two jobs to make ends meet — was fired. Well, that’s conservative jackassery for you; it’s exactly what you’d expect from a rightwing thug who lined his own pockets with taxpayers’ money. After that, The Shark and his Missus became permanently branded as waitress-hating assholes.
By the way, before he received the $225,000 settlement from the county, The Shark solicited donations for his legal expenses on (u)SP, and there’s no evidence he ever shared any of the $225,000 with his generous donors.
After The Shark essentially abandoned his own blog — after he got his payday, he didn’t really need it for anything — a few hangers-on and loiterers tried to pick up the slack, mostly by reposting stuff from their own individual blogs, but after a year or two the rightwing whining about the allegedly “stolen” governor’s election faded away after the local rightwing radio talk shows moved on to ranting about other topics, and with both The Shark and the election out of the picture, and nobody posting original material on (u)SP anymore, it just sort of died. It didn’t help that the little cowards still reposting articles there suppressed dissent and banned liberal commenters from the comment threads, because that policy reduced what was left of (u)SP to nothing more than a circle jerk in which a handful of regular commenters merely told each other how great they were.
So there you have it, a succinct autopsy of what was once Washington’s most influential conservative blog, and now nothing more than a corpse. Meanwhile, HA, whose existence closely tracked (u)SP’s, but with much shallower pockets, continues to thrive.

for the first ten or so years after their invention practically every single integrated circuit we produced was gobbled up the the nuclear weapons industry. And, of course, we wouldn’t have the intertubes if not for the efforts to make a nuclear command and control infrastructure that could withstand a massive nuclear attack.
But now consider the cost. Due to a massive lie about Soviet nuclear capabilities, we mostly squandered the post-WWII economic dividend producing enough nuclear weapons and delivery systems to wipe out the USSR and China four or five times over. In the process we almost blew ourselves up at least a dozen times (we got really fucking lucky). By diving down that nuclear rabbit hole (apologies RR) we breathed life into a corrupt and failing Soviet system and prolonged it well past its natural shelf-life.
Ted Cruz wants us to do the same thing with ISIS. I suppose the big tech dividend will be better artificial limbs. Neato.

@15,
Well, fear works too much of the time and it’s cheap and easy.
All sides rely on it too much. It’s become a big part of what passes for news media today. The point of which is that once we become “scared” the way our brains work changes. We actually become more susceptible to suggestion and we lose the capacity to carry out complex reasoning. But the effect is short term.
Positive emotions like sympathy, empathy, cathexis, etc. engage and activate the prefrontal cortex enhancing executive function. Decisions thus rendered are longer lasting and become features of our personalities.
Consider the typical liberal empathy for the disadvantaged. Liberal political philosophy emphasizes government establish and maintain some basic provision of needs at public expense for those unable to provide for themselves. The emotional basis for this is empathy. Liberals put themselves in that position. And they view the failure to provide as a moral failure. We can then go on to examine rationally how society benefits greatly from this kind of policy. But it starts from the emotional rendering of the circumstances and positioning in terms of moral judgement.
Contrast that with conservative political philosophy that emphasizes self-reliance and minimal government intrusion into affairs of personal finance. The emotional basis for this is resentment. Conservatives resent the burden created by the failure of others. And they view that as a moral failure on the part of those unable to provide for themselves. They can then proceed to explore in rational terms how society benefits from policies that emphasize personal responsibility and self reliance while punishing the moral failure of need. Or they can seek rational support from exploring how policies that provide for the needy contribute to moral decay among the needy, while punishing the morally upright. But again it all starts from the emotional rendering of the circumstances and positioning in terms of moral judgement.
On many important issues liberals have big potential advantages over conservatives because liberal political objectives permit rendering the circumstances through positive emotions. We just have to decide to do it and not be embarrassed about it. Resentment is not ethically or morally superior to empathy. It’s just easier.

BTW, Stanford 21-0 after 1 quarter, 35 nothing at half, 45-16 final and one of the smart kids from Carly’s alma mater set a pretty impressive record with 368 total yards.
But then Carly was never going to be president. She can now occupy herself with being rich, just like Dr. Ben can go back to being rich now that all those donors are backing a loser. Dr. Ben has sunk to 4th nationally, 4th in Iowa, 7th in New Hampshire, 4th in SC, 4th in Nevada, while Carly? Seventh or Eight mostly. Hell even Kasich is ahead of her in a few. 150 Somali Workers At Meat Factory Quit Because Not Allowed To Pray
Well, lookee what we have here: Cargill doesn’t know how to respect other people’s religious beliefs and practices, so now they’re minus an entire workforce.
The company said it fired the workers, in line with company policy, because they didn’t show up for work for 3 days after the company refused their religious accommodation request. Fair enough, they were fired for unauthorized absence, not because of religious discrimination; if the company discriminated against Muslims per se, they wouldn’t have been hired in the first place.
The company also said it fired them because their absence disrupted production. Fair enough; Cargill has a legitimate business interest at stake here. But doesn’t firing 120 workers disrupt their production even more?
Slaughterhouse work is physically hard, nasty, minimum-wage work. That’s why so many Somali immigrants were working there; you can’t get Americans to do this work on the terms offered by companies like Cargill. So now where is Cargill going to get 150 replacement workers from? Sneak them across the Mexico border? Bring them in on a boat from Syria?
I’m sure either of those options would be perfectly acceptable to this company, as long as they can get their production line running again. I doubt that Cargill gives much of a damn what Donald Trump thinks of Muslims, Mexicans, or Syrians, no matter how much dark money they contribute to GOP candidates and causes. All they want is cheap labor, and they’ll take it anywhere they can get it from.

An unannounced change of who was President of an organization. He’s still out there but I don’t know if he’s still working in the King county auditors/election office.

If I were working in a place where workers get 2 breaks and a lunch hour, but the company gave a certain bunch of other workers another 3 breaks a day so they could pray, I’d be pretty pissed off. That’s flat-out discrimination.
