I read a fascinating article by Howard Morland, who became famous in 1979 as the author of a Progressive Magazine article that purported to reveal H-bomb secrets. The government tried to prevent its publication, but lost in court because the “secrets” it was trying to protect were already in the public domain. The article I read isn’t new; he originally posted it in 1999 and updated it in 2007; I just happened to stumble across it. A few salient points:
1) H-bombs aren’t fusion bombs. There’s very little fusion. Nearly all their power comes from fission. This, Morland says, was the “big secret” of the H-bomb: They’re actually just two-stage A-bombs. The true H-bomb design was abandoned in the 1940s and was never built or tested.
2) Warhead design was optimized in the 1970s, and design work ended then; all existing designs are over 40 years old.
3) The U.S. tested “clean” warheads for P.R. purposes, but all the deployed warheads are in fact “dirty” bombs (i.e., they produce vast amounts of radioactive fallout), because that’s what the military wants because dirty bombs pack a bigger punch.

However, Mrs. Rabbit did get a new stove for T’giving. (We were down to one burner and no oven on the old one, which probably was at least 40 years old, as it came with the burrow when we moved into this hole 25 years ago). After reading countless reviews, she decided simple is better, and the model she chose cost me only $359 from Home Depot with free delivery and disposal of the old one.
I considered getting her a recycled 55-gallon steel barrel to cook on (you knock a few holes in it, turn it upside down, and build a fire inside it), which you can get free if you know where to look, but I caved in and bought a real stove because this one was such a good deal.

Our extended clan sat down last night to break bread and give thanks, and a rather strange thing happened–or rather didn’t happen.

Police press conference under way: Police confirm 4 cops and 3 civilians shot; they don’t know how many more casualties are inside, but apparently expect to find more. So 7 people confirmed shot and there may be many more.
Planned Parenthood statement:
“We don’t yet know the full circumstances and motives behind this criminal action, and we don’t yet know if Planned Parenthood was in fact the target of this attack,” Vicki Cowart, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said in a written statement. “We share the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating a poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism in this country. We will never back away from providing care in a safe, supportive environment that millions of people rely on and trust.”
Update on Colorado Springs
The CSPD information officer wrapped up a press briefing at 3:17 pm Seattle time, and here’s a summary:
1) Scene still active; police still encountering gunfire within last few minutes
2) Lone unidentified gunman is armed with a “long gun”
3) Gunman also brought duffel bags containing “items” (possibly propane tanks) which he placed inside and outside the building
4) Police have had no voice contact with gunman, and no demands have been received; possibly some communication by hand signals
5) Police have evacuated “numerous” staff and patients from Planned Parenthood clinic; unknown if any still inside
6) Hundreds of people are still trapped in surrounding businesses, and aren’t being allowed to leave, as scene still active
7) 4, possibly 5, police officers injured; at least 4 civilians injured but there are likely “many more”; 9 people known to have been transported to hospitals
8) No fatalities reported yet
9) A witness described a man being shot in his car in the parking lot, backing up out of control, then falling out of his car
10) Numerous law enforcement agencies on scene, including FBI and ATF
I was very impressed by how CSPD Lt. Catherine Buckley, the PIO, maintained her composure when asked about police casualties and said the police are focused on “doing our job.”
A report on ThinkProgress says,
“The suspect is being described on emergency radio channels as a white man in his 40s wearing a long coat and a hunting-type hat. The weapon is reportedly an AK-47 automatic rifle ….
Local media reports indicate the shooter may have fired on passing cars.”

The Colorado Springs tv station reports from “very reliable sources” that “the suspect has been detained.” It’s apparently over.
Who’s To Blame?
Not the patients, or the staff, or Planned Parenthood. They didn’t ask for this. The primary fault, of course, belongs to the deranged individual who perpetrated this act of domestic terrorism. But there may be additional blame to go around. It’s too soon to lay this incident directly at the feet of the Republican Party, but that’s certainly something people should consider in the days ahead:

We need not mince words here. The individuals comprising the violent anti-abortion movement are terrorists. And while the Republican Party’s guerrilla tactics against Planned Parenthood may not be directly tied to these violent fringe individuals, it certainly has to be encouraging them by fostering an “anything goes” climate. Look to see how many prominent Republican leaders publicly condemn today’s assault against PP’s Colorado Springs clinic. We may hear nothing but crickets chirping. The perpetrators of these incidents think of themselves as heroes. Of course, they not, and they need to be told that by the leaders of the Republican Party. Anything less is an abrogation of the GOP’s responsibility to civilized society.
