Psalm 137:9
Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against the rocks!

    What spews:

There’s a paragraph in Blood Meridian that pretty graphically describes someone swinging two babies and smashing them against each other skull to skull.

    This reminds me of that.

  2. 2

    spews:

    Songs of Solomon 4?

This gave me a boner when, in a moment of boredom while listening to the Reverend Pastor Arthur R. Pyke, I found this passage while thumbing through the older parts of the Holy Book. I was still young enough to get embarrassed about boners. These days, I take out a full page advert to trumpet the fact.

Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes within thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead.
Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.
Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely: thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks.
Thy neck is like the tower of David builded for an armoury, whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies.

  3. 3

    Patty Wagon spews:

It’s obviously a reference to the Apoditic Law (Exodus 21:24) practices of the day, considering the Palmist was speaking of Babylonian Captivity in the rest of the passage.

I thought you were Jewish? Maybe you just claim that for the penultimate victim status trump card in your social justice crusade.

However, let’s look at it through the lense of a back asswards HA apologist. It’s ok for the Palestinians to fire rockets at the people of Israel in your eyes because they are supposedly occupied and murdered by Israelis.

Apparently the only difference is your political inconsistency. You hate Christians and you hate Jews, even though you are one.

Sounds like someone is off their self loathing meds again.

  4. 4

    spews:

What kind of meds do you take to get some self-loathing. I’m having a problem with that. I try to self-loathe, but it isn’t working for me. The self-help section at Borders doesn’t have a section for self-loathing. It is time for all of us who need to self-loathe to join together and get some representation.

  5. 6

Proud To Be An Ass spews:

“…because they are supposedly occupied and murdered by Israelis.”

Well, they are. There is no “supposedly” about this.

  6. 7

    spews:

Trying to put passages of the Bible into “context” is a secular humanist idea and as such has no place in the scholarly study of the Bible. God said it, I believe it, and that’s that.

  7. 8

Proud To Be An Ass spews:

@5: click on the link and expand the passage. Looks like a cry for brutal vengeance on Babylon for the destruction of Jerusalem and the captivity. What is “timeless” about this lament is beyond me (see comment #3).

  8. 9

Proud To Be An Ass spews:

@7: Secular humanists cannot have ideas. They are the spawn of those who have made a pact with the devil. This explains limousine liberals.

  9. 11

    spews:

Exactly. Secular humanists want to “analyze” everything, whatever that means. Basically, they want to say that God lied. Which cannot be true, because God, by definition, cannot lie. God said it, I believe it, and that’s that.

  10. 12

    The Centrist spews:

re 7: The European historical period generally known for it’s philosophy of secular humanism is called the Renaissance.

Ms. Wagon refers to the Dark Ages as her benchmark. The image that arose in my mind when she referred to the biblical ‘Palmist’ was indeed risible, secular, and humanist.

  11. 14

Proud To Be An Ass spews:

“….because God, by definition, cannot lie.”

Irrelevant. God can do whatever it wants. Assertions as to the truthiness of God cannot be validated since, by acclamation, we cannot “know” God….(you know, that “I AM THAT I AM” stuff).

It follows that ascribing anything you damnned well please to god is perfectly ok.

  12. 15

Proud To Be An Ass spews:

@13: you are confusing them with fortune tellers and street magicians.

    ps: the entry about CoTex…..priceless.

  13. 19

    spews:

I don’t know about snarky stuff, but is any good stuff in the Koran?

    Song of Solomon 7:

How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince’s daughter! the joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman.
Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor: thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies.

Right off hand, I think that finding a woman’s belly set about with dark and curly lilies would prompt me to politely suggest a little trim.

  14. 20

    Michael spews:

Yeah, that election was a big win for the tea-bagging-bible-thumping-baby-smashers.

    http://voices.washingtonpost.c.....t-gop.html
Brown, a socially moderate Republican in an age where the national party is nearly unified on opposition to abortion rights and same-sex marriage, said states should be allowed to make their own decisions on marriage rights. He said while he is pro-choice, he is against partial- birth abortions, federal funding of abortions and believes in strong parental consent notification laws.

“I feel this issue is best handled between a woman and her doctor and her family,” he said.

The big takeaway is that a moderate Republican who campaigns hard can win an election. We already knew that.

I’m not sure what the takeaway for this weeks bible study is.

  15. 21

    Roger Rabbit spews:

“Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against the rocks!”

Did someone come up with a genetic test to identify future Republicans?

  16. 24

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@4 The best thing to do about self-loathing is be an activist! Don’t just stand there, buy stocks! I’ve got some I want to sell, but I need more self-loathing Republicans who hate their money to take them off my hands.

  17. 25

    Roger Rabbit spews:

    Outperform

The standard measure of investor performance is to compare one’s results with market indexes. CNN reports the S & P 500 lost 3.7% in January. My portfolio is up 1.3% this month. That means I beat the market by 5% in one month! Now all I need to repeat in February is some self-loathing Republican suckers who hate their money.

  18. 26

    Roger Rabbit spews:

    Underperform

The Republicans, on pretty much everything.

You name it — health care, the economy, foreign policy — they underperformed during Obama’s first year in office.

As Paul Krugman put it, the Republican minority in the Senate is making the country ungovernable. They only thing they vote for is “No.”

I call it “the tyranny of the minority exercised by the tyrants of the minority party.”

  19. 27

    Roger Rabbit spews:

How many babies have been murdered in the name of Christianity over the last 2000 years? Way more than the number of abortion doctors murdered in the name of Christianity over the last 20 years.

What is the context of this passage?

    I think it’s about revenge.

    Psalm 137:6 (New Living Translation)

6 May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth
if I fail to remember you,
if I don’t make Jerusalem my greatest joy.

    Psalm 137:7 (New Living Translation)

7 O Lord, remember what the Edomites did
on the day the armies of Babylon captured Jerusalem.
    “Destroy it!” they yelled.
    “Level it to the ground!”

    Psalm 137:8 (New Living Translation)

8 O Babylon, you will be destroyed.
Happy is the one who pays you back
for what you have done to us.

    Psalm 137:9 (New Living Translation)

9 Happy is the one who takes your babies

@18 How about if we post snarky stuff from the RNC? There’s no much difference between the RNC and the Quran.

  24. 33

my point on the Koran is you all are cowards. Afraid or so loyal to PCness that whether its a Army guy spewing venom, or Muhammed traveling w/ no luggage, or tarring Jews and Christians in this fake Bible study, you don’t touch Islam and therefore have elevated our collective risk.

Goldie should publish the Muhammed image that the Dane’s published. Of course he won’t.

  27. 36

    Mr. Cynical spews:

Let’s put this whole discussion in the context of an even more unpopular concept—JUDGMENT.

Atheist Progressives say there is no God and certainly no Judgment.
Some Conservatives will preach Judgment and somehow think their conduct is good enough to get by.
    Neither Works–

Many of you pride yourselves as deep-thinkers.
    Think about this…
What is the point of life without a Judge?
Don’t we need a Judge and Judgment Day to really have any Hope??
Without belief in God’s Judgment, what is to keep us from utter despair?

I don’t believe you can avoid Judgment Day and certainly none of us can stand up to Judgment Day. Jesus judges our heart in context with what we know. Judgment is proportional to what you know. You can deny it….but you cannot avoid it. Christ is our ONLY way out of the rath of God’s Judgment. Reject Christ means to reject God….as Christ took our place in God’s Judgment. The good news is that by turning to Christ, you’ve already had Judgment Day as it happened…on the Cross.

One of my favorite Bible verses are found in
    John 12:37-51:

The Jews Continue in Their Unbelief

37Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:
“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”[g]
39For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
    40″He has blinded their eyes
    and deadened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
    nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”[h] 41Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.

42Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

44Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. 45When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. 46I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

47″As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. 48There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. 49For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. 50I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”

I encourage all to study this and consider especially V.44 and what follows as Jesus CRIES out…
And he CRIED out because He is our only way out.

Use your deep-thinking skills and put away your harshness and anger.
If you want any meaning in your life, there must be a Judge and Judgment…otherwise, why does it matter?

  28. 37

    Mr. Cynical spews:

    Goldy–
I see once again you found yet another verse that the Daily Kos has used as attempt to mock and minimize Christ.
Can’t you find something on your own??

    Mr. Cynical spews:

    From Heidelberg’s Catechism #52–

    Q. How does Christ’s return
“to judge the living and the dead”
    comfort you?

    A. In all my distress and persecution
I turn my eyes to the heavens
and confidently await as judge the very One
who has already stood trial in my place before God
and so has removed the whole curse from me.^1
    All his enemies and mine
he will condemn to everlasting punishment:
but me and all his chosen ones
he will take along with him
into the joy and the glory of heaven.^2

    ^1 Luke 21:28; Rom. 8:22-25; Phil. 3:20-21; Tit. 2:13-14
    ^2 Matt. 25:31-46; 2 Thess. 1:6-10

    And

    Isaiah 53:5 (New International Version)

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

@35 Point? You don’t have any points. You only have fantasies. It wasn’t Democrats who were sleeping on the job prior to 9/11. It wasn’t Democrats who attacked Iraq when al Qaeda was in Afghanistan. It wasn’t Democrats who refused to protect our ports or fund security at home. By voting for Republicans, you put America at greater risk.

Kemper Freeman Jr. doesn’t want light rail in downtown Bellevue. He wants it to parallel I-405 instead. But some people living along that route don’t want it next door to their homes and condos. Now we’ve got a look at what the Kemper Freeman Alternative Route actually looks like.

It slices the Mercer Slough Park wetland right in two.

But hey, what the hell, ruining a pristine nature preserve and popular recreation area is a small price to pay for keeping Kemper Freeman Jr. happy.

  38. 54

    passionateJus spews:

    @35

Actually I care more about the religious nuts in this country because this is my country and they influence my life a lot more than the religious nuts in other countries. I have more power over the fools here than the fools over there. Almost all of the religious zealots (or at lease the religious zealots with power) in the US are Christians. I do not know of any religious zealots in this country who are powerful (ie influence public policy) and are not Christian, with the exception of the Moonies and Scientologists.

Plus I was raised a Christian (not anymore). The only people who have ever harassed me have been Christians. The only people who have banned books in the communities I have lived in were Christian. The only people who ever told me I was going to Hell were Christian.

So, highlighting the hypocrisy and grotesque nature of the “Bible” is more important to me than the “Koran”.

  39. 56

    God spews:

    Mr. Cynical

Why is it that you freely quote a book I never claimed as my own and reject those I myself wrote?

    Huh??
The term atheism originated from the Greek ἄθεος (atheos), meaning “without gods”.
You seem to be confused….and certainly haven’t read the Atheist rhetoric here at HA where Jesus is portrayed as a “fairy” or worse.
Denying God is part of the Atheist Progressive schtick…and now you are saying you don’t??

Do you believe in God? Explain your belief if you dare.

    Faith is a watershed issue.
    It’s either Yes or No.

When I said not to use My name in vain, do you think I meant not to say for Me what I would not say Myself?

I do not judge, I do not need to.

  42. 61

    Mr. Cynical spews:

    52. my ancestors came from Europe spews:

What is the point of life without a Judge?

Sounds like a free way to live.. Especially from fear. Doesn’t mean there’s there’s no consequences for one’s decisions, no escape from responsibility.

But if you die and that’s it, what are the real consequences?? I agree some folks have used Judgment to promote fear. However, when you Study and submit to the Gospel, you realize Faith is the only real freedom.

Is No God & No Judgment really a “free” way to live? What does “free” really mean in your context? We all have a built-in conscience that is at it’s core a knowledge of God.
Some choose to suppress it. That doesn’t mean you will escape Judgment though.

None of us can ever do enough to earn our way into Heaven. That is why God sent his Son to live among us and die on the cross. Christ took our place in God’s Judgment. That is freedom friend.
You can deny it…but you cannot avoid it.

Keep thinking deeply about this and keep struggling with the fundamental question…
Without God’s Judgment, why does anything matter?

Priding themselves on being deep thinkers allows them to remain terminal adolescents. That is the unspoken aim of all progressive thought, the avoidance of mature acceptance of responsibility.

They hate God because a deity assumes some standard of behavior for which non-compliance has a cost.

They hate free markets because they are unable to compete in them as adults, so they’d rather destroy them.

They hate any philosophy which requires accountability of any kind.

I don’t use the word hate lightly. The clinical fear liberals feel toward anything that asks for a mature response is frightening, but well documented.

  46. 65

    Hometown Spun spews:

Sure it sounds crazy, but this isn’t some vague “philosophy” or just random pile of rules from some culture 3,000 years ago. This is the rules directly from GOD, word for word, exact, never changing and NOT up for interpretation or “liberal” reading to try to put it in nice modern terms. So I’ve heard with regards to reading the vague poorly translated passages regarding gays, so counts here too. When GOD said to kill your kids, take slaves, murder the daughters of the nations around you, you MUST. Otherwise SHUT THE F**K UP about what the Old Testament says about ANYTHING including gays. It’s either ALL TRUE, every single crazy nutball passage, or it’s JUST RANDOM CULTURAL crap from the middle east 3000 years ago, in which case I could case less.

In my experience, deep thinkers are not eternal adolescents. Quite the contrary. You might try thinking some time instead of regurgitating nonsense that was instilled in you when you were 6. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you politically does not mean that person is an immature, irresponsible, hater who is headed for Hell. If you are trying to speak for Christians, you are not doing a very good job of it.

That aside, I can only comment the extent to which so-called christians can commit egregious sins repeatedly sure in the belief they can ‘repent’ and get back in god’s graces. That’s ok with me, but don’t spout off about ‘accountability—you don’t believe in it.

    Couple of corrections-

I didn’t say liberals were deep thinkers, but that they thought themselves to be so.

I don’t and didn’t claim to speak for all Christians, all Republicans, all golfers or all of any groups in which I could be classed. I don’t and didn’t say that a persons’ political leanings define their religion or lack of it. What I will write is that the extreme hatred of Christianity is almost exclusively a left wing expression.

You guys can like it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but the Christian influence on Western society is profound. Railing against it like the 10 year old in post 65 is just silly and culturally illiterate.

So when your jesus guy said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter heaven–was it YES or NO?

When HE said throw off ALL worldly things and follow HIM–did you do it? YES OR NO?

If the god you say you believe in exists, by His very WORDS, you are fucked for all eternity.

Sad..but so true. They seem so frustrated & angry…I think it’s because God gave all of us a conscience and free will to deny Him and Judgment. The frustration is the knowledge at some level that DENIAL does not mean avoidance.

    2. A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.

Calling me a narcissist is quite a psychological determination to make based on simple surety in my political convictions. I mean, you don’t know anything more about me than that I lean right in the political spectrum and that automatically makes me a narcissist?

And yet more unfounded assumptions- I like Ayn Rand and Nietzsche, even though I’ve never mentioned the latter, and often expressed a lack of admiration for the former right here.

34″Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37″Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40″The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

41″Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44″They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45″He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46″Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

The ‘least of these”? They are whomever YOU perceive as the least. According to Jesus’ own words, if you treat the people you consider to be the worthless least badly, you are going to have a rude awakening come Judgment day.

Apart from the condemning of Republicans that begins at 41, one of my favorite Scriptural passages. Republicans do not care about “the least of these.” Tax cuts for the wealthy, capital punishment, no extension of unemployment taxes, imprison teens caught with pot, launch wars against poor nations, no healthcare, the list goes on. Really Christian, isn’t it?

In responding to Proud to be an Ass, I inadvertently made it sound like I was making a jab at you. Sorry.

Having said that I don’t vote Republican on the basis of my faith, or in spite of it. I try to let the values of that faith guide my actions (unfortunately failing as often as succeeding) but frankly imagine God to be amused by politics.

If I were to sum up my general location in the political spectrum I’d have to to resort to Thomas Paine. “Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.” We need government, but we don’t have to like it.

    Re 79

Compassion can take the form of teaching to fish, rather than giving someone a fish.

To condemn all Republicans because you don’t agree with their method of bringing out the best in this country and it’s people is ignorant.

As ignorant as I was at 64 in denigrating the honest intent of those with whom I disagree. Mea Culpa.

Most conservatives I know honestly believe the policies they endorse are compassionate in result and in the end. They honestly believe that government is generally a poor solution to social problems. They aren’t out to ruin lives but to better them. I get that liberals disagree with this, but I can disagree with the liberal point of view while recognizing good intent.

In the meantime, people are starving. Wars rage, rain forests are razed, and we have orphans. I understand that there are some Christians who think that, in the long run, everyone would be better off if they learned how to fish (actually, as an angler, I believe that, but that is beside the point). The problem is that we really don’t have the long run in which to address social inequities. We only have the now. And, for better or worse, government has the resources, if we permit it, to jump in and take care of things in the short run. I really don’t like to watch children starve while we wait for some sort of sea change in human beings deciding that they want to take care of each other when government can jump in now and, however inefficiently, do the job.

    nar·cis·sism (närs-szm) also nar·cism (-szm)
    n.
    1. Excessive love or admiration of oneself. See Synonyms at conceit.
    2. A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.

Calling me a narcissist is quite a psychological determination to make based on simple surety in my political convictions.

All Proud Loser can do is name-call…meaning he has lost an valid arguments.
His obsession with calling anyone who disagrees with his far-left lunatics politics a narcissist is…kind of narcissistic!!

    I am a liberal because I am a Christian.

Only Liberals are Christians and all Christians are Liberal in his alleged mind.
Hard to believe this KLOWN’s claim that his dad was a Lutheran Minister, isn’t it?
Sigh…he must of been sleeping during Daddy’s messages about Judgment and only listened to the Social Gospel which has been bastardized by Proud Leftist to mean it’s the Guv’mints job to take care of everyone…not PL’s!

    Thanks for being honest finally.
BTW,,I have lots of Liberal Christian Friends and Conservative Christian Friends.
You might try a little diversity and get out of the HA cluster sometime.
It’s a great world with varying opinions.
    Where is your tolerance PL??

The Bible leans toward less intrusive government and more personal responsibility.

    So true…
It’s difficult to get too worked up over Goldy and his Atheist Progressive ilk pulling Scripture out of context and bastardizing it…or even suggesting that we are meant to totally understand all Scripture.
All Goldy is doing is digging stuff up that was discussed on the Daily Kos.

Goldy fears an indepth discussion of his own lack of Faith….or addressing this–
WHY DOES ANYTHING MATTER IF THERE IS NO JUDGE AND NO JUDGMENT?

It’s a great question that deep-thinkers have pondered since Adam & Eve.
Goldy at al can deny Judgment, but they cannot avoid it.
The ONLY WAY to the Father is thru Christ the Son. That’s why is John 12:44, Jesus CRIED OUT. He didn’t simply speak. WHY? Because Christ was to take our place in God’s Judgment. If we reject Christ, we reject God.
If you turn to Christ, you have already had your Judgment Day…it happened on the Cross.
    No one escapes Judgment.
May feel Liberating to say their is no Judgment…but you cannot avoid it.

Oh and Goldy…where did you conscience come from?? Random atoms banging around in your head??

    God to Mr. C spews:

    Mr. Cynical

You fail to respond to Me.

Do not take My Name in vain.

What a small God I would be if I insisted that you call me by My “real” name. As I told Moses, “I am that I am.” I am called by many names but have no name other than the Names you call me by.

Not all people hear me in the same way. But the law is My voice. The make as law for you, I make for you to give to others as a gift. To do else is to take MY name in vain.

You say you have read My word. but perhaps you read only a corrupted text. Here are My words again, in American … no need for translation into your tongue.

    First,
you shall not make wrongful use of My name, for the I will not acquit anyone who misuses My name for ends not of My law. Do not take My Name in vain.

Second, My law is the only Name you need. Show love to the thousandth generation of those who love Me and keep My commandments. strong> To do else is to take My Name in vain.

    Third
Do not have any other gods before me. I say “before” because the only worship I need is your love for each other. That is My law. My law is as simple as this: do unto others as you would have them to do unto you. To do else is to take My name in vain.

This simple law has many forms:

    Fourth,
Ninth Do not worship a statue or a name but honor your father and your mother, your teachers and benefactors. They do my will. To do else is to take my name in vain.

Fifth, do not murder. To do else is to take MY name in vain.

Sixth, do not not steal what belongs to others,To do else is to take MY name in vain.

Seventh Do not steal the love of those in love with each other or trespass between the commitments of those who have committed to each other. To do else is to take My Name in vain,

    Eighth
Do not bear false witness against your neighbor. To do else is to take MY name in vain.

Ninth, Preserve and better My creation. For six days you shall labor and do all your work. To waste what I made is to take My Name in vain.

Tenth On the seventh day, My Sabbath, I have told one of My chosen people, the Jews, not do any work nor impose work on their children, their employees or slaves, their livestock, or the alien resident in their towns. This is mM gift to the Jews, it is a gift you should treasure. To do else is to take My name in vain.

Nor have I given special access to some who claim to know My Name. That is your choice, not Mine. Do not call unto Me through the glare of your hatred of your fellows. To do else is to take MY name in vain.

Beware .. some of what is written IS not of My law:

I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,
