Sounds a great deal like a “Final Solution”, apologies to Godwin.
Given the great deal of both time and distance from Jesus’ actual existence that John was written, it’s hard to take any of his quotes too seriously. However this may be one of the few quotes put into his mouth that would be consistent with the teachings of the apocalyptic Jew that he was.
Obviously, the writer of John, who is by no means anyone who ever actually knew Jesus in person, is responding to the many doctrinal disputes that are arising between those followers who now see the church as a means of social control here on earth in the second century. And he is doing so with the well established line of attempted to clarify exactly what Jesus said, and what he meant when he said it.
John presents a much more ephemeral Jesus, who transcends his Judaism to the point of saying he existed as part of the Godhead from the beginning of time. Jesus existence on earth is now a “way” for mortal humans to reconnect with the Godhead and become immortal. In short, it is a short step from John to the Gnostic tradition.
Somewhere in there is supposed to be Jesus’ message of brotherly love and compassion.
That part always gets left out when the Gospels are read. We can understand why though. When you’re trying to control the masses, dictate human behavior and establish dogma; the whole ‘Love thy Neighbor’ thing becomes rather inconvenient.
Best to gloss over it and get right to the ‘since you’re going to burn in Hell anyway, I can kill you’ part.

Yet, ideas as radical as his are accepted in many countries .. including most Arab countries as well as now being discussed openly by Holland and even Sweden!

I do not mean to cast aspersions but as a non Christian, it seems to came that almost all Europeans, even those who claim to have forsworn Christianity, believe that all religions share Christian properties ..
1. belief in a universal truth
2. obligation to spread that truth by evangelism or other more drastic means.
3. the distinction between monotheistic, esp Abrahamic religions .. as if monotheism somehow was superior to paganism.
4. The concept of forgiveness .. that is Christians assert that they can make amends for past evils by apologizing or blaming those evils on their ancestors. One reason I admire modern Germans and modern liberal Americans is a shared ability to accept responsibility for past deeds of our cultures .. a very NON christian thing to do!
There is more, Europeans all grow up in the Christian tradition. This even true of Jews, Reform Judaism especially is very much influenced by Christianity and a lot of Ashkenazi Judaism is a reaction to Christianity.

However, you are right about Puddy not recognizing when he has been totally refuted. Puddy will simply change the topic or run away when confornted with facts that refute his weak assertions.

Puddy and I are just having fun. We play a very rough and tumble game here – no holds barred and we give no quarter. But when the chips are down, say like when I experienced a deep loss, he comes through as the friend he truly is. I wouldn’t hesitate to do the same. As for B-ball, the guy has a bum knee, so I’d understand if he’s limited to a game of horse, which he’d lose. I’m not into drinking or going to bars so I’d rather he and I hooked up elsewhere. If he hasn’t realized it yet, he has an open invite to contact me through Goldy so we can get together. I think I’d enjoy that very much.
Puddy and I are both Christians. I make fun of his “cult”, but to be fair, I do the same with my own. Beyond the humorous aspects of our religions, I see in Puddy a man of deep faith and kind generosity. I really do respect that. That said, I’m still going to make fun of him.
