Then Jesus said to him, “Put the sword back into its place. All those who use the sword will die by the sword.
Hmmmm….violence is not a cure, it is, rather, the disease.
Of course Jesus here is talking as an unarmed man, living under barbarians who would soon use the sword to destroy Jerusalem.
If the story is real, who would you propose he was talking with?
For your consideration
Our Moloch – by Gary Wills @the NYBR
Few crimes are more harshly forbidden in the Old Testament than sacrifice to the god Moloch (for which see Leviticus 18.21, 20.1-5). The sacrifice referred to was of living children consumed in the fires of offering to Moloch. Ever since then, worship of Moloch has been the sign of a deeply degraded culture. Ancient Romans justified the destruction of Carthage by noting that children were sacrificed to Moloch there.
Though LaPierre is the pope of this religion, its most successful Peter the Hermit, preaching the crusade for Moloch, was Charlton Heston, a symbol of the Americanism of loving guns. I have often thought that we should raise a statue of Heston at each of the many sites of multiple murders around our land. We would soon have armies of statues, whole droves of Heston acolytes standing sentry at the shrines of Moloch dotting the landscape. Molochism is the one religion that can never be separated from the state. The state itself bows down to Moloch, and protects the sacrifices made to him. So let us celebrate the falling bodies and rising statues as a demonstration of our fealty, our bondage, to the great god Gun.
Read the whole thing, and then find a way compatible with your beliefs to help us stop killing ourselves … now.
I thought this post @slog was especially poignant, given recent events:
I am Adam Lanza’s Mother
David Frum, writer for The Daily Beast and a former George W. Bush speechwriter, said the American people, not the president, should lead any potential debate over gun control.
The leader of our country, that people elected to lead, shouldn’t lead? Yeah, fuck you, David Frum.
@5 I wonder if all them conservatives would accept the results of a national referendum on gun control, sort of like how they like to put gay marriage up for a vote.
Only if they controlled it and it went how they wanted it to go.
@4 That guy who stabbed 22 people in China ain’t gonna do it again. Guaranteed. Back of head. Bang. Problem over. A few minutes of Wikipedia research reveals that mass killers, serial killers, and child killers don’t exist in PRC prisons. They’re usually dead within 2 weeks after being convicted. In China, killers get speedy trials; they rarely survive longer than 2 months after committing their crimes.
No further comment really needed.
Pro-gun rights politicians have gone to ground. NBC’s Meet the Press said it had invited the 31 senators, Republican and Democrat, who openly oppose stricter gun control laws to appear on the programme with Bloomberg and Feinstein. None accepted.
Guns Don’t Kill People Dep’t
Two cops were fatally shot Sunday while investigating a suspicious vehicle in Topeka, Kansas. Police are searching for the 22-year-old gunman.
Roger Rabbit Commentary: How obvious does it have to get that it’s too easy for guns to fall into the wrong hands before we finally do something? Amend the Second Amendment so that only the military, law enforcement, veterans, and rabbits can have guns.
Rabbits don’t shoot people; they disembowel them. Didn’t Mama Rabbit teach you anything???
