Over the weekend, the NYT had an article featuring Rep. Earl Blumenauer, the Portland congressman they hold up as a spokesman for the “Frustrated Left.”
Instead of forging ahead, Mr. Blumenauer, 61, finds himself fighting to retain one of the touchstones for liberals this year, a public insurance option in the health care overhaul, and is watching his hopes of curbing global warming grow cold in the Senate. Mr. Blumenauer, a seven-term congressman, is bracing for a tough vote on sending more troops to Afghanistan while he frets about the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay remaining open.
“It has been a hard landing for a lot of the people that I represent,” Mr. Blumenauer, referring to his largely liberal constituency, said as he assessed the first months of the Obama administration.
While Blumenauer is fairly diplomatic towards the administration, blaming circumstances rather than the president, it’s kind of hard to avoid coming to the obvious conclusion: this president is likely looking at one term only, and it ain’t because he’s “Jimmy Carter,” it’s because he’s Herbert Hoover. America didn’t elect a president of Goldmann Sachs, but that’s what we got. And when the next foreclosure crisis hits, and it’s coming, all hell is going to break lose.
The batshit insane right demands purity of their officials, who scramble over each other to genuflect in the directon of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck on a daily basis. It doesn’t matter how insane their base gets, they at least get that the base needs attention.
OTOH, we demand little to nothing of Democrats, being all pragmatic and stuff, and nothing is what we get, over and over and over and over. This administration thinks nothing of screwing over key constituent groups, it’s ready to expand a land war in Asia, and it just generally has its head up its ass. I guess tearing off people’s heads and shitting down their necks only works on HBO comedy shows, or when you shit down the necks of your enemies. What we didn’t grok is that in Rahm-world, we are the enemy.
Fuck, the administration should actually hire Jeremy Piven, at least he’s funny.
I guess I don’t know how to spell this out more clearly for the Democratic Party: stop fucking the regular people over, or you’re done. And don’t tell us you “don’t have the votes;” you had the votes for all sorts of dumb-ass shit like condemning Move On and declaring a brain dead woman alive, so I’m not buying it any more.
If you’re looking in the mirror and thinking about your next contributions from the financial “services” industry and the “health care” industry, I’m talking to you. Fight the stupid Blue Dogs and show the people you have a spine for once, on health care, on gay rights, on Afghanistan, on everything.
Or. You. Will. Lose. Big. And you can blame “liberal purists,” all you want, but the people who will be voting you out will be all the regular Americans who are fed up with weak-willed, sell-out shitheads who send their kids off to die and steal their tax money to give it banksters, health insurance executives and defense contractors.

#2 Yeah…bring back the founding fathers “freedom”! It’s time we get back to the basics. I agree Empty Suit! Tell the blacks to shut the F**K up and get back to the fields, like our founding fathers taught and expected. Tell Sarah Palin to shut the F**K up! You’re a woman! Our founding fathers didn’t WANT a woman to vote or ever be President. So Ms. Palin, back to the kitchen, make some more babies and keep out of men’s business you trouble maker. And if you live in an apartment, ALSO shut the F**K up because only land owners get to vote. And stop trying to elect Republican Senators for our state, Senators are appointed not elected. And for all you ‘founding fathers’ folks who are kiss ass to the military? STOP IT! The founding fathers did NOT want a standing permanent military. Unless Congress declares a war, the military should be disbanded.
Thanks for reminding us about the freedom our founding fathers gave us and their intentions and how the Constitution and reality should and do never change. Nothing like belief in a static universe! It’s comforting isn’t it? The idea that nothing ever changes, we never make mistakes (humans ARE perfect after all) and nothing ever needs to be fixed or updated. It’s comforting. Crazy, insane, non-sense, anti-reality…but comforting.
If only the “good old days” were really that. People have been pining for the “good old days” for thousands of years. It’s not a real solution, just a whining human trait of not wanting the world to change, and for the past thousands of years of our civilization (and for the next couple billion) it will continue to change. Sorry for the reality check.

Perhaps the Left needs their own version of the Club for Growth. You know an organization that recruits more ideologically “pure” candidates to run against moderates (or RINOs and DINOs if you prefer) and then helps fund their campaigns and runs IE advertising for them (or against their opponents).
It has worked remarkably well to drive most of the Republican moderates who represented safe districts and states out of Congress. More importantly sitting Republican members of the House and Senate do their best not to attract the ire of the Club for Growth lest they face a well funded primary challenge during the next election.
I really wish the Democrats had something similar.

A recent Harris Interactive Poll (full pdf results) has Barack Obama at 45% approval rating. In May 2009 Obama had a 59% – 41% approval ratings. Puddybud Remembers spews:
The Frustration as seen from Harris Directly…
President Obama may have won the Nobel Peace Prize, but unfortunately, he is not winning accolades from the American public as his job approval rating continues its downward slide. In September, U.S. adults were split almost evenly on the job the President has been doing – 49% gave him positive ratings and 51% gave him negative ratings. This month, the number giving him positive ratings drops to 45% while over half of Americans (55%) give him negative ratings.
The White House should also be concerned about weakness in some of President Obama’s strongest supporters. During the election, Echo Boomers (those aged 18-32) were the strongest age group supporting the president. Now they are of mixed minds on his performance as just over half (51%) give the president positive ratings and 49% give him negative ratings. The oldest generation, Matures (those aged 64 and older) are even more negative with just 39% giving President Obama positive marks and 61% giving him negative marks.

Name-calling and labeling. Very persuasive — if you are 9 years old.
Roger Rabbit spews:
I feel your pain, Jon, but I think your frustration is getting the best of you.
First of all, you’re forgetting what the alternative is — the choices right now are between Democrat-lite or batshit-crazy Hard Right. You don’t really want another Bush (or worse), do you?
Second, whatever Obama is, he’s no Hoover. If Hoover was managing this crisis there would be no bank bailout, no automaker bailout, no mortgage reworking — Hoover would let the “free market” take us all the way to the bottom, wherever that is, just as he did in 1930. Go ahead, hold your nose, but economists are in almost universal agreement that the combination of bank bailouts and federal stimuls was absolutely necessary to prevent a deflationary spiral and a much deeper collapse in the general economy. Starting the train of bailouts was one of the very few things Bush did right, and by continuing and expanding what Bush started, Obama literally saved the world.
Third, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Merely 2 1/2 years ago, we had a Hard Right president, congress, and supreme court. It was the election of Blue Dogs, generally by conservative voters in conservative-leaning districts, who flipped the House in 2006. That effectively killed Bush’s legislative agenda for the rest of his presidency and, among other things, made Social Security safe for senior citizens again just when it was looking like an endangered species. Obama isn’t against the public option; to the contrary, he clearly supports it. His pandering to powerful players in the health industry is distasteful, but by getting those interests on board, he’s making something possible whereas by butting heads with them the Clintons got nothing for health care consumers. Something is always better than nothing. Also, don’t underestimate the value of patience; you don’t get rich in the stock market overnight, it takes a while, and Obama’s legislation will get a foot in the door — always the hardest step. There will be opportunities to build on it and improve it in the future as voters grow more comfortable with it. Let the noisy opponents of health reform expend themselves, get tired, become muted, and go away. If we can’t get completely wholesome reform now, then we’ll finish the job later. But finish it we will, if we’re patient and go about it in a smart way. Obama is being smart.
There are new regulations on credit card companies in the hopper to protect consumers. In some fashion or other, the shadow banking system will be brought under government scrutiny and regulation, at least more than has existed until now, which is none. Even if you feel what’s done isn’t enough, remember, something is always more than nothing. Also, don’t forget that in politics, perfect is often the enemy of good. Taking what you can get while the getting’s good and biding your time and coming back for more later if/when the getting gets better is a good stock market strategy and it’s a good political strategy, too. Ya gotta think long-term, and often you’ve got to think incrementally.
Finally, the Obama administration did something to unshit on their liberal supporters today: It ended federal prosecution of medical marijuana users and suppliers.
“Pot-smoking patients or their sanctioned suppliers should not be targeted for federal prosecution in states that allow medical marijuana, prosecutors were told Monday in a new policy memo issued by the Justice Department. Under the policy spelled out in a three-page legal memo, federal prosecutors are being told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state law.”

So far, the only thing all of our politicians in DC seem to agree on is that there should be stiff fines for people who are too poor to afford insurance in the first place.
Does anyone remember in the 70’s when auto insurers claimed that the reason auto insurance was so expensive was because of people who did not have insurance. So, like the suckers that we are, we mandated auto insurance — after which the insurers cynically raised the price of insurance anyway.

Over the last 30 years wages have fallen and stagnated to replace that cheap credit and home equity loans were used to create the consumer demand that fuels the economy. All that’s gone now. All of the trillions of dollars of the Bush/Obama bailouts have gone to the super rich and they’ve used it to give themselves bigger bonuses and make the too big to fail banks bigger.

@47 Employment always lags other leading indicators in an economic recovery. The only way Obama could boost employment would be with a massive public works program similar to the CCC. But that would employ only people with construction skills or able to do physical labor, at relatively low wages, and at the cost of deepening deficits that would ignite inflation and set the stage for another deep recession later.
The fact is, we depend on private business — and primarily small businesses — for the bulk of employment in this country; and Obama can’t order businesses to hire. They’ll hire in their own good time, when they’re ready.
I feel fairly confident that employment eventually will surge. Businesses boosted their bottom lines — and the stock market — this year by cutting expenses. Many went too far in cutting inventory and production, and those who did will be forced to beef up staffing soon. In addition, cost-cutting isn’t a sustainable way to increase profits, so earnings-driven managements have no choice but to grow their sales and production, which means rehiring workers.
From an unemployed worker’s point of view, the best long-term strategy is to break your dependence on employers. After all, employers aren’t dependable — they’ve spent the last 30 years doing everything possible to prove they see workers as expendable commodities to be thrown away at the employer’s convenience, not valuable human resources to be nurtured, sustained, and retained through the hard times because they’ll be needed when good times return. No employer can be trusted anymore. So, workers have to learn to take care of themselves without employers.
In any case, the concept of making a living by going to a job is an illusion. There’s no respect or reward in working. In our capitalist system, you take care of yourself by owning income-producing assets, not by working your ass off to make your boss prosperous. Most jobs today are so lousy that losing a job isn’t much of a loss anymore. The fundamental rule is OWN NOT OWE — don’t forget that, ever. Live below your means, eschew expensive status symbols, pay off debt, stay out of debt, and use your money to build a capital base … a portfolio of assets that will take care of you when your boss won’t. All the tax advantages of our system go to those who own, not those who owe, and to those who tell others to work, not those who do the work.
Me, I don’t work! Why should I? I don’t have to. I never had to, and would have been just as well off, and probably much better off, if I had never worked. Because working doesn’t pay in this country. Not working pays! Not working gets the tax breaks! Working is punished by the system. Only fools work. I wish I had learned this when I was much younger, but better late than never.
In the future, all workers will have to be entrepreneurs, whether they want to or not, and regardless of whether they feel competent or comfortable in that role. That’s because we’re headed for an economy in which most companies exist for only a few years before they disappear, all jobs are temporary, and all employees are short-term temps. With the disappearance of employer-paid benefits like pensions and health insurance, everyone will become responsible for providing those things himself.
I think all American workers should convert themselves into small businesses. Instead of selling their labor for a few dollars an hour, they should sell a package of business services to other businesses at commercial rates. Everything should be B2B. Instead of waitresses taking minimum-wage jobs in restaurants, they should become Hospitality Consultants and sell a package of expertise and service to the restaurant industry at, say, $50 an hour. There’s a very reasonable price considering most car repair shop rates are $100 an hour or more, and you can’t get a home repairman or remodeler for less than $50 to $100 an hour. The last time I had a serviceman come to my burrow the effective shop rate was around $600 an hour ($150 for a refrigerator part replacement that took 15 minutes to perform).
You should do the same thing: Go into business for yourself (you’ll have to anyway) and charge the rates other businesses charge and get the tax credits and deductions they get. You can deduct your vehicle mileage, work clothes, tools, and computer if you’re in business for yourself. You can’t deduct squat if you’re an employee. Even newspaper reporters will become independent contractors in the future as traditional news organizations fade from the scene.
In short, work for yourself, not your boss, and get business tax breaks and put your profits to work by buying stocks and other income-producing assets. Then your ex-bosses will be working for you, not the other way around, and that’s the way it should be.

Puddy, an executive position is a bit different than a legislative one.
Hillary had a track record both as an attorney, in the non-profit world and as First Lady. Granted she didn’t have any prior elected experience, but she’s hardly the first person elected to the Senate without having held elected office previously.
Patty Murray before being elected to the Senate had been a state senator, a member of the Shoreline School Board, and a teacher. Murray had a long history of civic involvement prior to running for office.
Maria Cantwell before being elected to the Senate had been a Vice President of Marketing at Real Networks, a Congressional Representative, and a state legislator. She also has a history of civic involvement prior to her first run for office.
Frankly it is rather insulting to compare Susan Hutchison to any of these women.
Marvin Stamn spews:
You know things are getting frustrated for the obama when heleb=n thomas is telling you to stand down with his fights with fox news.
Veteran White House reporter Helen Thomas on Monday advised the Obama administration to stand down and avoid further fighting with Fox News and its correspondents.
In an interview with MSNBC, the columnist — who is promoting her new book on presidents and their campaigns — also stressed the White House ought to “stay out of these fights.”
It’s nice that she’s taking a stand on principle.
Forget the principled stance, she was giving tactical advice.

They have “opinions” about the racially charged hatred of President Obama fueled by Fox News and right-wing hate-talk radio and right-wing “Death Pastors” who advocate and actually pray with their congregations for the death of President Obama…but they have more of a vested interest in telling the corporate media what it wsants to hear.

I’m talking people like FDR, Adlai Stevenson, Robert Kennedy, Harry Truman, Hubert Humphrey, Frank Church, Paul Wellstone, Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, and Alan Grayson.
The Club for Growth has the power it has not by going after the Jim McDermott’s of the GOP but by going after the Adam Smith’s and Brian Baird’s of the party. Their point is why should you have a Chris Shays representing a seat a Michelle Bachmann can win? Similarly the Democrats have far too long tolerated moderates in seats a full-throated flaming liberal could hold.

My Problem with McDim is not that his heart is not in a good place (a bit to the left) but that he is effin ineffective in almost everything he stands for.
Worse, by sitting on his ass and strutting around like a rooster, he endangers his position.

Chris Stefan spews:
@108
SJ, I know what really being business friendly means. However in modern usage “business friendly democrat” generally means someone who is for reducing regulation on business and reducing business taxes. At worst it means someone who will support whatever rent-seeking scheme the lobby for a particular industry wants.
I want a group who takes on these DINOs and sell outs particularly when they happen to have seats in liberal leaning states or districts.
As for McDermott I generally agree about him being ineffective and a poor representative for Seattle. However I disagree a moderate Republican is the way to take him out. A Republican simply cannot get elected in the 7th district and isn’t likely to any time soon. Besides anyone who would willingly caucus with Boehner or Cantor is automatically suspect (not that Pelosi is much better but at least she isn’t crazy).
I’m much more in favor of finding a real fighting liberal for the 7th CD. Unfortunately most of the well known names won’t run against Jim for fear of pissing off the party powers that be. Though that may finally be changing. A lot of insiders seem to think McDermott needs to retire soon and are hoping Obama will appoint him to an ambassador post to get him out of the way. If McDermott runs again in 2012 I fully expect Ed Murray will mount a challenge.
