Friday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Friday, 7/18/25, 8:14 am

Hey, it’s under 80 degrees for a few days anyway.

– I don’t know if the US Attorney stepping down is related to the ICE related arrests but the timing is a lot.

– Good news if you feel like you need to protect dogs or kids in hot cars.

– After months in ICE detention, I can’t blame Alfredo Juarez Zeferino for accepting deportation, but dang.

– Ballots dropped this week. Get them postmarked or dropped off by August 5.

    Obliterated?

The United States has assessed that only one of Iran’s three principal nuclear facilities was destroyed in U.S. strikes last month

damage at the Fordow site have been the clearest to assess,

The objective to collapse the deeply buried infrastructure at Fordow “seems to have succeeded,”

But there are still significant unknowns, including whether the centrifuges at the deepest levels of Fordow were destroyed or rendered inoperable, or if they were moved before the bombing.

Much less is known about the efficacy of strikes at the other two facilities, the aide said.

The bunker-busting bombs were not used at the Isfahan site because the Pentagon had assessed it was “pretty much impenetrable,” the aide said. Isfahan, the country’s largest nuclear research complex, has bunkers that are even more deeply buried — and beneath harder rock — than the terrain at Fordow. Instead, a submarine fired a salvo of Tomahawk cruise missiles to destroy surface targets.

Iran’s program was degraded by “one to two years,” [Sean] Parnell told reporters earlier this month.

lmao.. let’s see that was April 24, 1980..

So not only did YOU vote for Carter after the real life “miracle on ice”, Feb 22, 1980..

You voted for Carter after the failed hostage rescue.. As your partner in slime liddle maxiwipe would bleat: Wow, just wow!

And are you equating the Iran bombing raid stunt that doesn’t stop the Iranian enrichment program, doesn’t result in regime change with the failed hostage rescue?

mmmm. it sure does seem that way..

I bet your frat bros made your ass pay during hell week.. No worries dumbfuck. you had your eyes on the prize – being able to at least try to notch one in the brother’s “body count” book.

Reading Fareed Zakaria is kinda cringey but there’s some ok troll triggering shit here:

Trump signals that his administration is fearlessly executing mass deportations. But the numbers reveal a different reality. Since February, his administration has deported 14,700 people per month on average, according to NBC News. That’s far below Obama’s peak in 2013, when he deported 36,000 per month. And it’s not even close to the Trump administration’s reported goal of deporting 1 million people in a year.

Trump’s deportation dragnet is less effective than those of his predecessors because it is chaotic, theatrical and detached from the systems that work.

Trump has prioritized optics over outcomes. What his administration lacks in strategy, it tries to compensate for with spectacle — sweeping up schoolchildren, targeting families, broadcasting raids on social media.

But this is a rare case of Trump’s Teflon wearing thin. Immigration was once his strongest issue politically. Today, it is fast becoming a vulnerability.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/07/18/trump-deportations-obama-cruel/

Then Zakaria cites some poll stuff which puts me to sleep. Ok if it is real I guess. I’m skeptical.

Most of the “legals” hate the “illegals” no matter if the “illegal” is a criminal or just a slob working at bottom of the barrel jobs. Been my experience my whole life. Even the repukes who line their pockets with their cheap labor hate them even as they’re carted away by ICE or Border Patrol leaving the greedee repuke fuckers in the lurch.
