“Why do politicians always lean into the camera to get their pictures taken?”
Because their photographers and handlers tell them to.
On the other hand, this is America, where every citizen is a politician, by design. So that’s a difference without a distinction.

Democrats must continue working to blow up the GOP-concocted myth that Palin is a “reformer.” She is the nation’s greediest governor in terms of seeking earmarks for her state. She not only supported the “bridge to nowhere” before opposing it, but kept the federal money after jumping aboard the opposition train (which she did only because the bridge was already dead). When she was mayor, Wasilli was one of only 8 of Alaska’s 149 incorporated municipalities that employed a Washington, D.C. lobbyist. As mayor, she not only raked in record amounts of federal largesse, but also ran the town (previously debt free) deep into deep. Reformer, your ass — this woman is a phony.

“Palin’s earmark requests: more per person than any other state
“GOP vice presidential candidate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin touts her record as a reformer who worked to end the ‘abuses of earmark spending in Congress.’ But Palin has embraced earmarks from early on in her career as a mayor of Wasilla to the governor’s mansion in Juneau. Just this year she sent to Sen. Ted. Stevens a proposal for 31 earmarks totaling $197 million — more, per person, than any other state.

“ANCHORAGE — As she introduced herself to the nation Friday as the Republican vice-presidential candidate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin touted her record as a reformer who worked to end the ‘abuses of earmark spending in Congress.’ But … Palin embraced [earmarks] from early on in her career as a mayor of Wasilla to the governor’s mansion in Juneau. Just this year, she sent to Sen. Ted. Stevens, R-Alaska, a proposal for 31 earmarks totaling $197 million — more, per person, than any other state. …
“Palin’s requests to Congress came at a time of huge federal deficits, while Alaska state revenue was soaring due to rising oil prices and a major tax increase on oil production that Palin signed into law in late 2007. … ‘She was hungry for earmarks just like everybody else,’ said Larry Persily, who worked at the Alaska state office in Washington, D.C., until earlier this year. …
“Before she left [the mayor’s] office, Wasilla … got $27 million in earmarks …. During her fall 2006 campaign for governor, Palin … said she would fight for the earmark to build the bridge. … A year later, as criticism of earmarks mounted, Palin began to speak out against earmarks … [but] took the federal money to fund Alaska earmarks ….
“Palin’s earmarks request came just days after President Bush promised in his State of the Union address to veto any spending bills from Congress unless lawmakers cut earmarks in half. … [D]ocuments Palin’s office released to The Seattle Times on Tuesday show her cuts in earmarks were far more modest than she claimed … only 22 percent, not the 63 percent she claimed.”

“Here’s a pretty comprehensive rundown of Palin’s documented record on requesting earmarks. In her second term as Wasilla mayor, she got a total of $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of fewer than 9,000 people.
“As governor, she requested $254 million in earmarks last year, and $197 million in earmarks this year. As the Seattle Times story notes, that’s more per capita than requested by any other state in the union ….

I just received a robo-call claiming to be from “Deb Saxton, Washington State Democrats, Campaign to Change America”.
While the call itself was only mildly annoying, it occurred to me that there was a distinct possibility that the call didn’t actually come from our party, but might have simply been one more attempt by the Republicans to discourage Democrats and annoy independents in our name.
Certainly, few organizations can match our Washington State Democratic Party in finding ways to annoy Democrats, but a robo-call campaign seems like a bad enough idea that even our party leadership should be able to recognize it as a really stupid plan.
Together with the fact that the call hung up within a couple of seconds of the ending line “press one to volunteer”, my thought is that it’s probably another “Speaker’s Roundtable” stunt.
At least I hope so. Please, someone, tell me that we aren’t actively trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
