SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Google has made an announcement that could help hundreds of homeless people in San Francisco get back on their feet.
Every single homeless person in the city will be given a life-long phone number and voicemail, should they choose to accept it, NBC11’s Lisa Bernard said.
Google is partnering with San Francisco to provide the service to homeless individuals and to shelters and agencies so they can distribute the numbers to their clients.
The announcement was made at a Project Homeless Connect event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium Wednesday.
A homeless person will be able to call in for his or her messages from any phone.
The move by the city and the company would allow someone to be able to fill out a job application, which asks for a call back number.
It will allow clinics to share test results.
Mayor Gavin Newsom and Google said they want to empower people.
“How do you communicate as a homeless individual? ” Newsom asked. “How do you expect your life to turn around if you can’t even get information or if someone can’t even get in touch with you?”
“It just seems exactly like any other voice mail,” said Craig Walker, senior project manager of Google. “There’s no stigma attached to it that ‘hey this is a temporary thing’ or ‘this is an 800 number.’ It’s really just a local number owned by the user.”
One man who used to be homeless said the right message can raise the spirit.
“Having your family, friends and loved ones being able to say ‘here I’m thinking about you, I love you, I want you to know you’re mine, and I miss you,’ can have a monumental change in one’s behavior.”
“Providing phone and messaging capabilities and access to vital health care is an extraordinary step forward in the city’s commitment to a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of this vulnerable community,” Newsom said.
“We’re firm believers in the power of technology to improve the daily lives of individuals and communities as a whole, and we recognize that access to phone and voicemail services is one way that Google can help San Francisco’s homeless stay connected with family, friends, social workers, health care providers, and potential employers,” Walker said.
Walker said the program was ready to start right away.
Users can record their own greetings, and no indication is given to callers that the service is different from any other voicemail system.
If the program is successful in San Francisco the plan is to offer it to homeless people in cities across the state and country.
Homeless clients received phone service as part of their Project CARE (Communications and Respect for Everybody) cases.
The California Pacific Medical Center also launched its pilot program that offered free mammograms to homeless women at the same event.
The outreach effort marked the 21st Project Homeless Connect event at the auditorium.”

Not really. $40 billion over 2 decades is $2 billion a year, which is less than 1% of Washington’s gross state product, and no Boeing workers will lose their jobs. In fact, the loss of this contract could be somewhat offset by using the 767 assembly line to increase production of commercial planes for which there is strong demand and a lengthy backlog. It’s a setback for Boeing, which invested $1 billion in developing its prototype, but it’s not a major blow to the state’s economy.

The evaluation team, made up of a broad spectrum of acquisition and operational professionals, is currently sequestered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, supporting a multi-month effort to carefully dissect and evaluate each proposal submitted in April 2007.
“I have an Air Force-wide, hand-picked team of more than 150 experts reviewing every aspect of these proposals,” said Terry Kasten, director of the 653rd Aeronautical Systems Squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB.
“When the dust settles, we’ll have spent many tens of thousands of man-hours scrubbing the content of these proposals, conducting a legal review and preparing summary information for both an independent advisory council assessment and ultimately a source selection authority decision,” Mr. Kasten said. “The depth and breadth of this team is very impressive. The executive branch submits budgets, makes procurement decisions, awards contracts, etc. Congress’s role is limited to appropriating money and public hearings.
Sure, Congress could refuse to appropriate the funding for the contract, thereby killing the deal. But they can’t, under any circumstances, award the contract or choose the winning bidder themselves. And, as a practical matter, they really don’t have any incentive to defund the program. The current tanker fleet dates from the 1950s, and apart from the fact they’re no longer mission-adequate, at some point the wings are going to fall off those old planes. Congress really doesn’t have any choice about approving this appropriation.

However, they can carry additional fuel in underbelly tanks located (like the cargo bay in a passenger jet) in the portion of the fuselage not usable by passengers or bulk cargo. In addition, because this 2-engine plane will use the wings of a 4-engine model, the wings come with 2 extra engine mounts that can be used as hard points to suspend underwing tanks from. It is this feature that will allow the plane to refuel two Navy or Marine fighters at the same time, a capability the Boeing design didn’t offer.

Both Boeing and Airbus proposals met these requirements, presumably one more than the other, in varying degrees & respects.
What I find interesting is the Air Force Press Release makes no mention at all of Airbus oor EADS.

But, doesn’t the argument that the AF changed the specs at the last minute to match the Airbus model make some sense? That will (should) come out at the hearings, if true. But even though it be the case, it probably wouldn’t change the outcome. It might be a blot on the integrity process of the Pentagon/Administration…if either had any integrity left.

They volunteered for military service, many because of the benefits it offers, but they were ordered to Iraq and not a few of them are quitting the service — and some are even deserting — because of the repeated and prolonged deployments. Obviously, this war isn’t what they signed up for.
