The revenue benefits of legalizing marijuana are minor. Projected revenues of $22 million amount to less than 1/1200th of the state’s revenue needs. The real story is on the spending side — enforcing the laws against marijuana are a huge drain on public resources. The question we should be asking is, Is it worth it?
I don’t know the answer to that. I’m not a medical expert. I haven’t studied the issue in depth. My personal experience with marijuana is slight; I’m not a user. But logic argues that unless it’s a very deleterious substance with a very destructive impact on society, suppressing it isn’t worth the resources we’re pouring into that effort.
But logic has nothing to do with it. The Right is implacably opposed to legalizing MJ, and their opposition has nothing to do with medical arguments, MJ’s impact on society, or facts or rationality. It’s a visceral knee-jerk reaction against “those dirty hippies” who protested the war in Vietnam. That’s what this is really all about.

@2 “I think most everything that is happening in society now can be traced to loving the hippies or hating the hippies.”
Have you ever wondered what happened to the hippies? A great many of them are rightwingers now, and some of today’s most vocal wingers are ex-hippies. So, their hatred of the hippies is really a hatred of themselves, and the drama you’re seeing acted out on the national political stage is a weird self-loathing psychosis. Too bad Freud isn’t here to enjoy this; he’d have a field day with it. He saw sexual undercurrents in all behavior, so he’d say “free love” caused all this, because it turned out to be neither “love” nor “free.”

The US currently has 1 in every one hundred of its citizens incarcerated (vastly more than any other country in the world). A vast majority of those in prison are there for drug-related charges. California is paying $69/day to private contractors for prisons, since that state well exceeds its occupancy limits. Michigan wanted some of CA’s prisoners for its state prison, but wanted $89/day and couldn’t get CA to pay that.
If we have roughly 3 million citizens in prison at any one time, and they cost (on average) $50/day, we can safely assume we spend $150 million each day on incarceration. Essentially, the tax revenue from legalization would pay for a whopping 6 days out of each year. We need to stop being the world’s greatest lock-em-up for everything society.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the hippies? A great many of them are rightwingers now, and some of today’s most vocal wingers are ex-hippies.
Got Proof? Oh wait for it… another “this is how it works” diatribe…
Foolish Dumb Bunny, hippies were anti-establishment, make love not war (anti-war), long haired, drug imbibing, free-loving peeps. Those are very progressive liberal positions. Most Dummocrapts are against the proposed Afghanistan buildup. That’s a progressive liberal position. Nancy Pelosi is of that ilk. She from San Francisco Dumb Bunny. San Francisco banned JROTC of all things Roger Dumb Bunny. If Gallup polled them you’d find they were 1960s hippies Dumb Bunny. Sounds like the big progressive Dummocraptic tent types of the new millenium.
Of course Roger Dumb Bunny skips over the Hippies who led the charge in the ACLU to have JROTC banned in high schools. Butt poor Dumb Bunny can’t rewrite history because federal law enstates JROTC into all high schools that are federally funded, and no local laws can override the federal laws. Isn’t that the same problem ex-mayor Greg 2 Nickels had with his “gun bans”? You can review JROTC in the 1995 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the 1996 NDAA, and the Wee Willy Clinton approved 1997 Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act (OCAA).
Some hippies still live in Berkeley & San Francisco CA, Boulder CO, and Eugene, OR to name a few places run by Dummocrapts. If they could have put tracking chips into the 1969 Woodstock generation, you’d probably see some of those types begat the HA Libtardos of today.
Look at places where ROTC is banned and you’ll find progressives er… grown up Hippies in the government or academia. Some of these bans are over 30 years old, a few 40 years old. Hippies who became professors at Columbia, Harvard, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Chicago, Wellesley, Tufts, Gordon, Endicott, Salem State, Yale, City University of NY all banned ROTC. Retired General Colin Powell was a CUNY product and was an ROTC graduate. He’s still a great man irrespective of what ylb arschloch calls him. The program is gone at CUNY
Remember when Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm “called” for the Columbia University ban to be removed in 2008
“I recognize that there are students here who have differences in terms of military policy, but the notion that young people here at Columbia or anywhere, in any university, aren’t offered the choice, the option of participating in military service, I think is a mistake.” Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm
Columbia president Lee Bottinger said no!
Puddy would ask Roger Dumb Bunny to read this but it would explode his poorly postulated putrid positions. My three nephews went through negative student academic issues when they were identified with Gulf and Iraq War experiences. All three now have advanced degrees. Why? Hippies man… Hippies.

Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forgetspews:
Hey correctnotright, what do you think about this on ClimateGate?
What has been noticeably absent so far in the ClimateGate discussion [by correctnotright, Daddy Love and other HA Libtardos] is a public reaffirmation by climate researchers of our basic research values: the rigors of the scientific method (including reproducibility), research integrity and ethics, open minds, and critical thinking. Under no circumstances should we ever sacrifice any of these values; the CRU emails, however, appear to violate them.
Why are you quiet correctnotright? Is “Peer Reviewed” a sham?
This will blow its course soon in the conventional media without making too much difference to Copenhagen — after all, COP15 is about raw politics, not about the politics of science. But in the Internet worlds of deliberation and in the ‘mood’ of public debate about the trustworthiness of climate science, the reverberations of this episode will live on long beyond COP15. Climate scientists will have to work harder to earn the warranted trust of the public – and maybe that is no bad thing…
But this episode might signify something more in the unfolding story of climate change. This event might signal a crack that allows for processes of re-structuring scientific knowledge about climate change. It is possible that some areas of climate science has become sclerotic. It is possible that climate science has become too partisan, too centralized. The tribalism that some of the leaked emails display is something more usually associated with social organization within primitive cultures; it is not attractive when we find it at work inside science…
It is also possible that the institutional innovation that has been the I.P.C.C. has run its course. Yes, there will be an AR5 but for what purpose? The I.P.C.C. itself, through its structural tendency to politicize climate change science, has perhaps helped to foster a more authoritarian and exclusive form of knowledge production – just at a time when a globalizing and wired cosmopolitan culture is demanding of science something much more open and inclusive…
There is much more correctnotright. Have you read his blog before correctnotright? No? Is that because he was “Peer Reviewed”?

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 26% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (41%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -15. This is the second straight day at -15, the lowest Approval Index rating yet measured for President Obama. Seventy-four percent (74%) of African-Americans Strongly Approve along with just 19% of white voters.
Among all voters, just 34% now give the President good or excellent marks on his handling of the economy while 47% say he is doing a poor job in that arena. The eco charts are good backgroud but to really communicate you gotta boil it down way more than that and tell a story like this.
“This year, Washington state is cutting basichealth, but providing free health care in prison to XXX XX offenders who violated drug laws. The amount spend housing and caring for these offenders would more than pay for the basic health program. We think our children’s health comes before that of pot smokers and those participating in the distribution of cocaine to consumers of that drug. Why is Governor Gregoire putting drug consumers in front of little kids?”
“Those drug consumers are making bad choices, but we need to stop providing them with free housing, food, protection and health care in our state prisons. We need the space for violent criminals and we need the money for basic health.”

It’s interesting to watch the technology revolution (unending it seems), and the economic evolution (I wish that would stop!), but the 60’s and 70’s, the best so far. So why do we still arrest and imprison folks for possession something that grows wild in eastern Washington? Seriously, why? Someone tell Gregoire that she could grow, control quality and purity, package, sell and tax this stuff….and probably have a better chance at keeping it out of the hands of mind-still-forming 18 year olds and younger.
But, I guess she and her group of last century thinkers would have to look out through the windows and do something different. Something radical, like try to generate some revenue instead of just take it, in the form of her yet another round of tax increases. We need new people and new ideas. It would be nice to have a governor who has done more in their life than pick up a government check.

Marijuana is not “going away.” It will be here decades from now as a substance people choose to enjoy for its intoxicating effects or for the relief of their suffering. The government might as well get used to this and come to terms with the rest of society. Legalize, regulate and tax – Prohibition ain’t workin’!
The real “drug” problem we should be concentrating on is the level of debt in our economy. Debt can be likened to chemotherapy drugs: they help, in small, controlled amounts, to kill cancer cells, but are, in fact, simply poisons. Debt is an economic poison that, when used sparingly, can lead to a better standard of living or growth in the economy. Too much debt, however, and the whole system implodes, like we’re seeing now.
Take my advice – pay off all debt as soon as possible and limit your use of other people’s money!

Emmanuel Goldstein spews:
Mr. Rabbit,
As usual I agree with you. I think most everything that is happening in society now can be traced to loving the hippies or hating the hippies. Just ask someone from back then, the polarization still exists.

He saw sexual undercurrents in all behavior, so he’d say “free love” caused all this, because it turned out to be neither “love” nor “free.”

spyder spews:

Remember when Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm “called” for the Columbia University ban to be removed in 2008
Columbia president Lee Bottinger said no!
Puddy would ask Roger Dumb Bunny to read this but it would explode his poorly postulated putrid positions. My three nephews went through negative student academic issues when they were identified with Gulf and Iraq War experiences. All three now have advanced degrees. Why? Hippies man… Hippies.

“I append here an e-mail correspondence I have engaged in over the past few days trying to educate a Soon/Baliunas supporter who originally wrote to me asking how I could think that Soon and Baliunas are wrong and Mann et al. are right (a view attributed to me, correctly, in the Harvard Crimson). This individual apparently runs a web site on which he had been touting the Soon/Baliunas position.”

Where is that ever mouthy “Peer Reviewed” correctnotright and that ever “effusive” Daddy Love on this issue?
Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:
Hey correctnotright, what do you think about this on ClimateGate?
What has been noticeably absent so far in the ClimateGate discussion [by correctnotright, Daddy Love and other HA Libtardos] is a public reaffirmation by climate researchers of our basic research values: the rigors of the scientific method (including reproducibility), research integrity and ethics, open minds, and critical thinking. Under no circumstances should we ever sacrifice any of these values; the CRU emails, however, appear to violate them.
Why are you quiet correctnotright? Is “Peer Reviewed” a sham?
Puddybud Remembers Progressives Forget spews:
Correctnotright, what about Mike Hulme?
No? Is that because he was “Peer Reviewed”?

tell us how much each state will save by letting out ALL drug lrelated offenders (but not any ocnvicted of anythign violent) and what programs are about to be slashed for the same amount of money.
We need the space for violent criminals and we need the money for basic health.”
etc.

Politically Incorrect spews:
Is marijuana “good” for us? Probably not. Is it the government’s business to interfere with our desire to use or not use marijuana? Definitely not!

Scientists have estimated that temperature spikes above 2 degrees could have disastrous consequences, including large rises in sea level, droughts and stronger storms.
One of the authors of the study, Professor Corinne Le Quere of the University of East Anglia, says the conclusions raise the stakes for delegates to the Copenhagen gathering, who will try to hammer out a successor to the Kyoto Accords that committed signatory governments to emission reduction goals. The United States did not sign on to that agreement.”
Hmmm… University of East Anglia… The place that just admitted it lost raw data… The place where the emails describing how to correctly “peer review” the raw data into manipulation? Yep, dat’s da place.
But you have to read the comments after the story. PRICELESS!

Well, I’m one of those old hippies and I am far from a right winger. There are far more deaths and violence with alcohol than pot. I urge people to watch the documentary The Union. It seems a lot of growers would like to keep pot illegal because that is where the big bucks are. They can get more per ounce because of all the hands it goes through, as well as the risks involved. Too sad, it needs to be legalized just like alcohol. It sure would take the hassle out of getting it!

Being peer reviewed on dailykos as I type.
They already came to the conclusion it’s all bush’s fault.
They could prove it, except they destroyed all the data.
