Interesting that this Australian state snap election was called over a lost confidence vote against the Premier, over a budget that included funding for a stadium. Tasmania had been lobbying for the AFL to add a club in the state, they finally get one, the Devils(Warner Brothers is on board), but can’t build or upgrade a stadium.
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-19/tasmania-election-2025-live-updates/105532526

Incumbent party in the hung state assembly is the Liberals, opposition is Labor, and polls suggest probably not much of a change, except more third parties on the cross bench. Tasmania does state elections backwards from the Federal Parliament. The lower house uses a proportional system with 5 7 seat districts. The State Senate is elected single seat.

My willingness to engage in this transaction as the contract seller is what Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit refers to as “gambling”.

Although if the share price explodes by $160 or so between now and August 15 I could lose money.

Copper is at the core of the American economy. It’s in the wires of our pervasive electronics, in the walls of homes and in the engines of cars. Experts say President Donald Trump’s plan for tariffs on the red metal could stymy the goal of boosting American manufacturing while potentially igniting inflation.

Trump’s July 8 announcement of a 50% tariff on copper imports beginning August 1 sent prices surging 13% in one day, up to a record high of $5.69 per pound.

It was the biggest single-day increase in copper prices on record going back to 1968, according to FactSet.

PR. Sent a ‘budget to a corporate friendly blogger, get the Fox News/Post/Credulous Dumbfuck to run with it.

Why is that $100m figure laughable? The biggest expense for the show is Colbert’s $15m/yr.

CBS probably leverages the theater as an asset to get other loans but they’ve owned the theater since 1948 (Ed Sullivan). They also don’t ‘pay’ for advertising. CBS ‘bills’ the show for spot time and then writes it off as operating expense for the show but NOT as profit for the broadcast network. No one actually paid for that airtime.

Finally, the Ed Sullivan would have gone through the digital upgrade that all TV and Broadcasting went through in the 2000s. Letterman was on the air until 2015. So at this point all the physical equipment to tape the show is maintenance based not Capital Investment based. (As an example, the broadcast cameras in the King 5 studio you can see from the street are 20year old digital Ikigama HD.

A head writer on a Late night show and SNL is $150-200K. The entire writers’ room is $500/600k. A Union cameraman in that kind of gig is $95k/yr and Colbert is a four camera show with some handheld operators too ($500k/yr) A make-up artist is $1,200/day. A show the size of Colbert probably has three of them ($1m/year) on staff. I could go on but you get the point here.

Only by including the purchase price os the theater, the ads paid to themselves, the full value of all the lights and equipment etc can one reasonably get anywhere close to $100m/yr for the show’s coat.

The biggest expense for the show is Colbert’s $15m/yr.

I rather doubt that. I suspect the biggest expense is the givebacks to advertisers attributable to the show’s failure to achieve the promised viewership.

Advertising revenue for Colbert’s show has dropped 40% since 2018 – the financial reality that CBS said prompted the decision to end “The Late Show” in May 2026.
    …
The show’s ad revenue plummeted to $70.2 million last year from $121.1 million in 2018, according to ad tracking firm Guideline. Ratings for Colbert’s show peaked at 3.1 million viewers on average during the 2017-18 season, according to Nielsen data.

For the season that ended in May, the show’s audience averaged 1.9 million.

An expense bigger than Colbert’s is the employment cost of everyone else.

If Colbert gets $15M and the total employment cost of the 200 people who work the show is $150k each (admittedly a guess and no, I don’t have anything to back it up other than wondering what the total employment cost of a NYC employee must be) so another $30M, that’s $45M. The other stuff adds up, including partitioning of executive costs to Colbert’s show.

If someone was told the salary and benefit costs of a project were $45M it wouldn’t take much convincing to get them to agree that a total project cost of $100M is accurate.

An intellectually curious person would ask how the math works. Your link.

The show’s ad revenue plummeted to $70.2 million last year from $121.1 million in 2018

So it costs $100m to produce (allegedly) leaving a deficit of $30m (allegedly) and somehow that means it’s losing $40m.

    Cool story, CBS

Ad rates are adjusted with each Neilsen ‘sweeps’ period, once a quarter. Tell me you don’t know how an industry works without telling me.

If the show was losing $30M last year and if ad revenues have been steadily falling for more than half a decade then yeah, it could be losing $40M this year. Tasmania is going to be interesting, looks like the conservatives are the top party in the snap election called by the no-confidence motion against the Premier. conservatives 14 seats, Labor 9, possibly with a chance at one of the four remaining uncalled seats. The cross bench will be interesting, from the coverage it will be besides 5 Greens, a couple independents, and possibly 1 from the Shooters, Fishers, and Farmers party. The last one will probably back the Liberals(the conservatives), at least one independent backs the Premier (not the Premiers party), and a couple of the other independents re-elected voted for the no-confidence motion.
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-20/rockliff-seeks-new-government-as-labor-vows-no-instability/105551180

Will take a few days to call the last seats. As far as paces go, gone from a Tasmanian Devils(as in the cartoon) pace with the first quotas, to a snails pace as surplus votes are distributed. They use the 5 House seats Tasmania has for the Legislative Assembly districts, with 7 seats each. The version of proportional representation used, the quota goes down, the more seats in the district.(Not like the MMP system in NZ with the 5% threshold for list seats). Tasmania also took some of the fun out of electioneering. Federal level, with compulsory preferences in the house, third parties and major parties used to make deals in exchange for Senate votes., distributing How to Vote cards. Tasmania Legislive elections don’t allow that, partly because the ballots use a rotation system where candidate names are in different orders on different ballots.

More liberal waste on the chopping block:

WASHINGTON — A Biden administration plan to create a “green” fleet of postal vehicles has churned out a mere 250 electric mail trucks in just over two years — after shelling out taxpayer funds meant to build thousands — leaving Republicans raging at the multibillion-dollar “boondoggle.”
    …
As of this month, the project is well behind schedule despite taxpayers forking over $1.7 billion — prompting Capitol Hill Republicans to try to rescind the remaining nearly $1.3 billion earmarked from the IRA.
    …
Wisconsin-based Oshkosh, a defense contractor, agreed to be paid $2.6 billion by the USPS to provide the 35,000 vehicles — but the Washington Post reported late last year that just 93 battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) were ready by November 2024, even though 3,000 were expected by that date.

This money was part of the badly misnamed Inflation Reduction Act. Silly liberal fucks being handed everything they ever wanted. As if EV mail trucks would ever be able to leave the charging station for a route in a mid-February Buffalo cold snap.

Turns out he lost his green card, AKA Legal permanent resident, and went to the local INS office to apply for a replacement. At that appointment, presumably with INS looking at his legal status on a screen ICE grabbed and tried to disappear him.

The Trumpistas knock on him? He was a refugee from the horrors of the Pinochet regime, which in their eyes is some sort of scarlet letter.

Did they send him back to Chile? Hell no, they deported him to Guatemala, because our useless Supreme Court ruled they could. At least they didn’t ship him to war-torn Sudan.

Why would they grab a harmless grandfather? This looks like a clear case of quota-filling, but it may be more nefarious than that. Immigration offices are easy pickings, but there may be a hidden agenda of sabotaging the legal avenues of residency.

America used to have one class of citizenship: You’re either a citizen or not, and all citizens have equal rights. That has changed. Now there are three classes of citizens: Birthright citizens, citizens, and heritage citizens.

“Birthright citizen” is a misnomer. This refers to people who were born in America but are not citizens, are subject to deportation without due process, and in fact currently are being deported.

“Citizen” refers to a person who was born in America, and is nominally a citizen, but whose citizenship can be revoked for living abroad and/or criticizing Trump. Rose O’Donnell is an example of this type of citizen. She’s currently in Ireland, and if she returns to the U.S., she’ll probably be arrested and deported to Sudan or El Salvador.

“Heritage citizens” refers to white people with Northern European ancestry. If their ancestors participated in exterminating Native Americans and owned slaves, that’s a plus. Black people obviously aren’t eligible for this category, regardless of where their ancestors came from.

This is a favored category of citizenship with special privileges, such as being waved through neighborhood ICE checkpoints without having their vehicles searched. However, heritage citizenship can be forfeited for subversive activity. In other words, Democrats are subject to being stripped of citizenship and deported (or thrown out of helicopters into the ocean) regardless of whether they’re citizens or heritage citizens.

I hope this information helps you clarify your own status.
