Great story of the only Senate Democrat to celebrate Independence Day in 2025:

    U.S. Senator John Fetterman
    @SenFettermanPA

Last week, Gallup polled only 36% of Democrats are “extremely or very proud” to be American.

In the greatest country in the world, that’s just wrong.

I’m unapologetically grateful for our nation and the American Way of Life—today, and always.

    Happy Birthday, America. 🇺🇸

    And lots of liberal tears.

Trump signs his agenda bill, with a flyover and fireworks to mark the occasion

He’s turned the traditional July 4 picnic into a celebration of the country’s independence and of his win in Congress, seizing upon the day’s fanfare to salute the most decisive legislative victory of his second term. The festivities included a bomber jet flyover – a nod to the military’s recent strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities – and will feature a fireworks show on the National Mall later.

“We made promises, and it’s really promises made, promises kept, and we’ve kept them. There’s a triumph of democracy on the birthday of democracy, and I have to say that the people are happy,” Trump said on the balcony of the South Lawn alongside first lady Melania Trump.

    So. much. fucking. winning.

“The greatest country in the world” fought a civil war to keep slavery, waged genocide against Native Americans, tolerated a century of terrorism against black people, and elected Trump twice.

Yes, despite all that, America is great in some ways. But the GOP isn’t one of them, and you’re not either.

4)The country that used to build to last. I was in Portland Saturday, partly to catch Portland’s First MAX trains in action one last time, as retirement is imminent (potentially by the end of next week) after 40 years, what a waste.(San Francisco has historic streetcars 3 decades older in regular service), but it was the train cars filling in on Amtrak Cascades 503 that were a sign of when things were built to last.

After the Horizon coaches that replaced the TALGOS were in turn pulled from service due to defects. Amtrak surged a couple 3-4 car sets of AMFLEET Coaches from the shop in Delaware. The Amfleets were adapted from the High Speed Metroliner EMU originally a project between the Feds and the Pennsylvania Railroad, making the basic design nearly 60 years old. The unpowered Amfleets Coaches were built between the mid 70s to early 80s. Rose pretty good for such an old coach, my main concern was Control Point 188.5 near DuPont.

One of my obligatory stops in Portland is the Oregon Railroad Heritage Center. Haven’t been down there since 2019, and they only had the outline for the Turntable, but looks like it’s installed now. Don’t really need it for the logging steam engines that replaced Southern Pacific 4449 (locomotive that participated in the Bicentennial)on Holiday excursions, but they hope to have 4449 and SPS 700 running again someday. It’s lack of places to run that are the problem, BNSF is on again/off again, UP doesn’t host from foreign roads, even ones they now own, and Oregon Pacific’s right of way is in need of serious repair to lift weight restrictions.(Museum is acquiring it, plans to use the revenue from the one remaining customer and any others they attract, to fix it up).

Saw a few of the remaining Type1 MAX care, but odds of catching one, pretty small 3-5 out of 81 LRVs in action on the Saturday schedule, but rode the replacements. Good design.

In 2020 I said POS Hunter Biden would take down Joe Biden. He would have, too, if not for the silence of the FBI regarding the authenticity of the laptop contents, and the cover for the lies provided by the MSM, which told their own lies.

Anyway, let us simply conclude that I was off by four years:

How Hunter Biden Helped Derail His Father’s Re-Election
Joe Biden’s debate against Donald Trump was supposed to prove the aging president’s stamina. But in the weeks leading up to it he was devastated—and distracted—by his son’s legal travails.

Hunter found out the Democratic National Committee was paying President Biden’s legal fees arising from an investigation into his handling of classified documents, taken over by a special counsel, Robert Hur. Hunter asked why the DNC could not pay his too. Lawyers ultimately decided the president should not be involved in fundraising for Hunter, and the DNC could not justify picking up Hunter’s tab.

This might have been the one correct decision made by the DNC since it decided to let itself be bought by #CrookedHillary in the runup to the 2015 primary season.

And here’s POS Hunter weighing in on his POS father’s response to the SCOTUS decision on Donald Trump’s first term presidential immunity:

Suddenly an unidentified voice piped up from Biden’s screen and recommended an Oval Office address. At first, some aides had no idea who was speaking. It soon became clear the voice belonged to Hunter Biden, who the White House staff had not known was on the call.

White House Counsel Ed Siskel expressed some concern about Biden speaking from the Oval Office. Hunter snapped back: “This is one of the most consequential decisions the Supreme Court has ever made.” He said his father had every right to use the powerful imagery of the Oval Office to deliver that message. (They later settled on the Cross Hall, the long hallway on the first floor of the White House.) After the call ended, Siskel told colleagues Hunter’s presence was inappropriate.

Here we have a convicted felon speaking on behalf of a cognitively incompetent president. Democrats lined up nearly lockstep behind this corruption as their 2024 message.

The price Democrats will pay is not yet fully known, but it will clearly be staggering. The greatest price yet to be paid will be a 7-2 conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

    The winning continues.

For decades a palace of well-paid vice presidents in cushy offices presided over the manufacture of Budweiser, America’s beer, in that most American of cities, St. Louis. ‘Few companies on earth were more evocative of America, with all of its history and iconography, than Anheuser-Busch,’ writes veteran Financial Times journalist Julie MacIntosh in her strenuously reported book, Dethroning the King: The Hostile Takeover of Anheuser-Busch, an American Icon. As the title suggests, the reign of the King of Beers ended in the summer of 2008, when the company merged with the Brazil-based brewing giant InBev, an outfit about as culturally different from Anheuser-Busch as one could imagine. At $70 a share, or $52 billion, it was the largest all-cash acquisition in history and even more noteworthy because it occurred during the gathering storm of a global financial collapse . . . When growth-hungry InBev arrives on the scene, a company so lean and cost-conscious that they’re called the Walmart of brewers, all hell breaks loose at the complacent Anheuser-Busch headquarters. The Brazilians make a pitch of $43 billion in what’s known on Wall Street as a “bear hug”—an offer so generous that the recipient can’t refuse. But A-B’s board does refuse, triggering weeks of moves and counter-moves and endless end-gaming by the two companies. Ms. MacIntosh relates every gambit in crisp, scene-by-scene detail.”

“The Democrats onstage saw themselves as morally courageous. American voters, it turned out, saw a group of politicians hopelessly out of touch.”
“Standing side by side at a primary debate in June 2019, nine of the party’s candidates for president were asked to raise their hand if they wanted to decriminalize illegal border crossings. Only one of them held still. Six years later, the party remains haunted by that tableau. It stands both as a vivid demonstration of a leftward policy shift on immigration that many prominent Democratic lawmakers and strategists now say they deeply regret, and as a marker of how sharply the country was moving in the other direction.”

I’d like to thank libbies for their lockstep support for a senile and incompetent president while this was happening:

Representative Veronica Escobar of Texas said she first realized Democrats were in trouble in December 2022. So many migrants were crossing into El Paso that they were sleeping on pizza boxes as temperatures fell below freezing. A city known as a haven for immigrants since the 1800s was overwhelmed. Residents were losing patience, she recalled.

Still, when she worked on bipartisan legislation to expedite asylum cases at the border, Ms. Escobar said, fellow Democrats criticized the proposal as too restrictive.

“Living through what El Paso lived through, feeling how unsustainable all of this was, and frankly how challenging this was, I knew this would cause a massive shift in the perspective of Americans about immigration,” she said. “There was a failure on the part of the Democratic Party altogether during the last administration in adequately recognizing what was happening.”

@59 “Ask yourself why so many teachers joined the work force during the month of June. The numbers are screwy below the top line. The private sector number and the teachers number are probably each incorrect.”

The numbers likely are broadly correct, but skewed. Business Insider explains,

The gains in education and healthcare might be in part because schools were more hesitant to let folks go this summer, perhaps due to ongoing teacher labor shortages.

“Probably what’s going on here is that there were smaller-than-expected summer layoffs in the education sector, which could be about teachers or it could also be about support staff, like school bus drivers or custodial staff,” Daniel Zhao, lead economist at Glassdoor, said.

If that is the case, Zhao said, “we might get an equivalently sized drop in the fall when schools reopen due to a smaller-than-expected hiring.” He added that the new data is likely a seasonal quirk, rather than a sustainable increase in roles.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/education-and-healthcare-boost-june-jobs-white-collar-jobs-struggle-2025-7?op=1

And if that indeed is the case, then to get a fairer picture of the labor market, the June education hires probably shouldn’t be counted at all, which suggests the 63,500 education hires should be subtracted from the June total, leaving 83,500 hires vs. 111,000 projected. Note that construction added only 15,000 jobs, even though summer is the peak construction season, and manufacturing lost jobs. All of this points to an anemic, if not shrinking, economy.

In 1897, a federal judge in Washington state named Cornelius Hanford, for whom the town of Hanford was named, from which the name of the Hanford nuclear reservation is derived, explained why the federal supremacy clause generally bars state prosecution of federal agents under state laws in a case captioned In re Lewis, 83 F. 159, as follows:

In deciding this case, I do not mean to say that the warrant which Mr. Kiefer issued was a lawful warrant, nor that the proceedings under it were proper proceedings. I do not mean to say that the petitioners were lawfully discharging their official duties in what they did. In my opinion, the warrant itself was improvidently and erroneously issued, and the proceedings were all ill-advised and conducted with bad judgment. But where an officer, from excess of zeal or misinformation, or lack of good judgment in the performance of what he conceives to be his duties as an officer, in fact transcends his authority, and invades the rights of individuals, he is answerable to the government or power under whose appointment he is acting, and may also lay himself liable to answer to a private individual who is injured or oppressed by his action; yet where there is no criminal intent on his part he does not become liable to answer to the criminal process of a different government. With our complex system of government, state and national, we would be in an intolerable condition if the state could put in force its criminal laws to discipline United States officers for the manner in which they discharge their duties. Or, take it the other way, if the government of the United States should prosecute as criminals sheriffs and other ministerial officers, justices of the peace, and judges of superior courts for errors of judgment, or ignorance, causing blunders in the discharge of their duties, it would bring on a condition of chaos in a short time.
    Id. at 160.

What’s interesting about this is the “taking it the other way part,” where he suggests the same principles behind barring states from prosecuting federal agents carrying out official duties should also bar federal authorities from prosecuting state judges for errors of judgment or blunders in discharging their judicial duties. Right there, in print, you’re reading the rationale for throwing out the Trump administration’s charges against Wisconsin judge Hannah Dugan, even if it’s found that her efforts to protect the integrity of her courtroom technically violated a federal law or interfered with immigration enforcement. Of course, the continuing viability of an 1897 precedent is somewhat speculative, and even if the principle and reasoning is still considered sound, I can’t predict beyond Thomas and Alito what the partisan Supreme Court majority would do with this.

Can’t Bring Yourself to Type the Word “Ass”?

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
