Wonder if there will be a mass-reflagging of foreign ships if this act manages to pass the Senate and is signed by the President?

    https://www.bairdmaritime.com/shipping/us-house-of-representatives-passes-bipartisan-american-cargo-for-american-ships-act

I have seen some call it Jones Act on steroids. It would take years to build enough domestic-built ships to make it happen. Matson has built up a good niche with their China-Long Beach Express service (CLX), but using their newest Jones-Act compliant vessels on it, allows those vessels to be re-deployed if CLX traffic drops, or the route has to be terminated. Horizon thought of a similar service, but bought foreign ships and flew them under the US Flag. The service failed, their Jones-Act fleet got older, and Matson now owns the Tacoma-Anchorage run.

@6 You know he’ll do it. He’s itching to do it. Trump has always wanted his own war, though like cowardly bullies in general, he was thinking of attacking a small and defenseless country (Panama or Greenland) — until this opportunity came along. Iran, of course, is more formidable, so you see him hesitating. But you know what’s going on inside the head of the very unstable moron. He can’t help himself.

If Hamas loses its monopoly on food distribution in Gaza, very soon there will be no more Hamas.

Hamas-loving “journalists” at NBC know this, and therefore parrot whatever Hamas tells them.

    Hen Mazzig
    @HenMazzig

WATCH: NBC clarifies days later that the people they claimed were killed at a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation food distribution site in Gaza were actually killed at a United Nations food distribution site.

Media are repeating verbatim bogus Hamas claims that people are getting killed seeking aid. These claims are clear examples of Hamas propaganda meant to discredit the GHF, the new source of aid being delivered directly to Gazan civilians.

Hamas relies on its income from hoarding and selling aid to innocent people. It’s their lifeline. That’s exactly why the US has funded an alternative.

Mainstream media must stop reporting Hamas propaganda as fact. The future of Gaza and the safety of its citizens depends on it.

Fox is reporting that six B-2s are en route to Guam.

I mention Fox because other sources don’t have it. Search CNN for Whiteman and B-2, and you get White Lotus.

For those who think that Congress must approve a strike against Iran, here’s a little news item about someone in the last administration – you know it wasn’t Joe Biden – approving B-2 strikes against Yemen last Fall:

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. —
On Oct. 16, B-2 Spirit long-range bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, conducted precision strikes against five hardened underground weapons storage locations in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
    …
Every B-2 mission is a total force mission, and the air strike conducted on October 16 was no exception. The 509th Bomb Wing, 131st BW, and the J-GSOC played a significant role during the strikes.

We wouldn’t be going to war against Iran. We’d merely be excavating a hole in a mountainside for Israel. And hey, we’d have DOCTOR Jill Biden’s blessing, because if she could bunker-bust in Yemen, DJT47 sure as hell can do it in Iran.

    Just watch.

Not clear on why the B-2 can carry two bunker-busters if its payload is in the 40k# range and the bombs are 30k# each.

Its payload capacity of more than 40,000 pounds allows the aircraft to carry a diverse array of conventional and nuclear weapons. The bomber’s internal weapons bays are specifically designed to maintain stealth characteristics while accommodating large ordnance loads, which could include two GBU-57A/B MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator), a 30,000-pound precision-guided “bunker buster” bomb.

But I’m willing to be shown.

Say, who’s up for some good news this weekend?

If current trends hold through the 2030 census, states that voted for Vice President Kamala Harris will lose around a dozen House seats — and Electoral College votes — to states that voted for President-elect Donald Trump. The Democratic path to 270 Electoral College votes, the minimum needed to win the presidency, will get much narrower.
    …
The Brennan Center, which is left-leaning, projects Democratic states in 2024 would lose 12 seats in the next census. The right-leaning American Redistricting Project forecasts a similar blue-to-red shift but pegged the loss at 11 seats, not 12.

Exit question: What if current trends accelerate?

It will be years before the Democrat party recovers from the disaster that was the DNC’s choice of Boxcheck Momala.

If the projected map for the next decade were used in 2024, Trump’s electoral college margin would have been even larger. He would have won the Electoral College 322-216 instead of 312-226.

It is unclear whether the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) can reliably destroy Iran’s nuclear sites at Fordow and the most recent halls at Natanz, which are thought to lie more than 80 m (260 ft) underground; the original Natanz enrichment plant sits roughly 20 m (66 ft) below the surface.

The MOP is reportedly able to penetrate about 60 m (200 ft) of earth or 18 m (59 ft) of reinforced concrete with a compressive strength of 5,000 psi (34 MPa). Iranian domestic research has produced concrete exceeding 30,000 psi (210 MPa), a level that could sharply reduce the bomb’s effective penetration depth. Complicating matters further are the weapon’s guidance accuracy in a GPS-jamming environment and the possibility of deflection or yaw caused by advanced bunker-shell construction techniques.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GBU-57A/B_MOP

So, is Trump going to commit an act of war against Iran, with all that entails, to carry out a mission that might not work?

That’s the wrong question to ask. The right question is, will Trump do anything Netanyahu asks him to, regardless of how it impacts U.S. interests, or makes any sense?

    We’re about to find out.

is that the planes took off from Missouri not fully fueled. They refueled early in the flight to Guam. The weight not carried in fuel permits the heavier bomb payload.

FWD only. Nissan WILL NOT – and this is important – offer a version of the LEAF with AWD. AWD subtracts a little more than 20 miles of range for the EV I leased vs. the FWD option, although I’m getting better range than advertised – about 20 miles/charge better. One-pedal driving is awesome and I am certain is why I do so well with the battery. Did I mention that the Nissan LEAF doesn’t have that?

303/charge is an estimate by Nissan, not something they’ve actually demonstrated. Also not yet released by Nissan: The price of the vehicle. QoS McHillbilly pulled it out of his ass.

303 is for bare-bones. You want wheel upgrades to something you’re not embarrassed to have in your driveway, other features that most people want, and you’re at 259 miles.

Oh, and if you are going to charge at a Level 2 charger, you’ll need an adapter.

If you care little about quality and only want a shitty ride that you can’t trust when it’s wet or snowy, follow QoS McHillbilly’s advice and get a Nissan LEAF.

Otherwise, spend another five grand and get the Chevy Equinox. Or just about anything else with AWD.

[I like everything about my leased Honda Prologue except the turning radius, the feeling of having no idea where the front bumper is when pulling into a tight parking space, and pretty shitty GM-level carpeting. The Prologue is a re-badged Chevy Blazer EV.]

Metro’s weekend dieselizations of trolley routes are an aerial version of Call Before You Dig. Good thing Metro buys Diesel on contract. If prices spiked, perhaps Metro should cancel them until further notice and have only the 49 and 70 under dieselization for the interim. Deactivation is a $1000 fee in advance, plus crew costs after it’s done.

    https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/metro/about/contractor-resources/transit-system-impacts

The 70 is on long term dieselization while the route is being converted to RapidRide standards. The 49 is on long term dieselization due to 520 Lid construction. Although with the battery upgrade, a diversion over I-5 is doable. It was just under off wire range limits last time they did it.

The lead B-2 then dropped two GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs) – also known as “bunker buster” bombs – on the nuclear site at Fordo. Caine said a total of 14 MOPs were dropped on two target areas.

All three Iranian nuclear infrastructure targets were hit between 18:40 Eastern time (23:40 BST) and 19:05 Eastern time (00:05 BST), Caine said.

The bombers then exited Iranian airspace and begun their return to the US.

“We moved everything beforehand.” is Iran’s version Pee Wee Herman’s “I meant to do that.”

    Aimen Dean
    @AimenDean

Debunking the “We Evacuated Everything” Narrative:

As expected, following the strikes, the Iranian propaganda machine has kicked into gear, claiming – rather predictably – that the targeted nuclear facilities, such as Fordow and Natanz, had been emptied in advance. Let’s address that.

    1. Real-Time Monitoring by the IAEA:
Both Fordow and Natanz are under partial surveillance by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). While Iran has restricted access in recent years, many of the monitoring systems – especially CCTV cameras – were active in the past and still provided some insight until at least early 2023. In several cases, the IAEA retained knowledge of infrastructure layouts and could remotely detect large-scale activity, especially if dismantling or evacuation were attempted.

    2. The Myth of Rapid Evacuation:
This isn’t a warehouse full of sacks of potatoes. We’re talking about highly specialized, sensitive equipment, thousands of IR-1 and advanced IR-2m and IR-6 centrifuges. For context:
•Natanz had an estimated 15,000–20,000 centrifuges at peak capacity. Even after the JCPOA, thousands remained in use or storage.
•Fordow, while smaller, housed over 1,000 advanced centrifuges, some enriching uranium up to 60% purity in recent years.

These are not items that can be boxed up and trucked out overnight. Dismantling a single cascade (a chain of 164 centrifuges) safely requires days of work, if not longer. Multiply that by hundreds of cascades, and you quickly realize this isn’t a quick getaway.

Additionally, centrifuges are connected to high-pressure uranium hexafluoride gas (UF6) lines. Improper disassembly can lead to contamination, equipment damage, or worse, leaks of radioactive gas. Such evacuations would require weeks of preparation under controlled conditions.

    3. Eyes in the Sky and on the Ground:
Let’s not forget that the U.S. and Israel have had persistent, layered surveillance over these sites for years, satellites, high-altitude drones, SIGINT, HUMINT. Every inch of ground around Fordow and Natanz has been watched for telltale signs of activity. The idea that Iran stealthily evacuated multiple facilities without being detected is simply ludicrous.

    4. Propaganda to Salvage Prestige:
This entire narrative is damage control, plain and simple. The regime knows its core scientific and strategic assets were hit. They can’t admit it, so they spin: “We were too smart for them. Nothing of value was lost.” But it’s hollow bravado, masking what is in reality a colossal strategic failure – yet another one – in a long line of catastrophic blunders by a leadership that has brought nothing but ruin to a once-proud civilization.

There’s no such thing as “eliminating” a country’s ability to build nuclear bombs short of replacing the regime that wants to build the bombs with one that doesn’t; and as of this morning, Iran’s regime hasn’t been replaced and there are no publicly announced plans to replace it.

The first essential requirement for building a nuclear bomb is knowing how to do it, and once a country possesses that knowledge, you can’t unlearn them.

As for raw materials, anyone with brains who’s been threatened with military attack on their production facilities is going to squirrel their enriched uranium offset in small containers that can easily be dispersed and hidden away.

Assuming, as has been reported, Iran already has enough enriched uranium to build 10 bombs, and were smart enough not to store it at the target sites, all they need now to build them is some tools and an empty garage.

The money was frozen assets that were unfrozen in exchange for Iran agreeing not to build a nuclear bomb. Trump undid that deal in his first term; and in his campaign for his current term, promised to bring Iran to heel with a phone call.

I served on the National Security Council under President Clinton. I was Joe Biden’s Deputy Staff Director of the Senate foreign Relations Committee. I voted for Kamala Harris and have been a vocal critic of many dangerous and undemocratic actions taken by President Trump.

But I’m not a blind tribalist and am perfectly comfortable praising President Trump for bold and courageous actions in support of America’s core national interests, as he took last night.

Iran has been at war with the United States for 46 years. Its regime has murdered thousands of American citizens. Its slogan “death to America“ was not window dressing but core ideology. It was racing toward a nuclear weapon with every intention of using it to threaten America, our allies, and the Middle East region as a whole.

No actions like this come without risks, and I imagine the story will get more complicated over time, but that’s why these types of decisions are complicated.

Although I believe electing Kamala Harris would have been better for our democracy, society, and economy, as well as for helping the most vulnerable people in the United States and around the world, I also believe VP Harris would not have had the courage or fortitude to take such an essential step as the president took last night.

    149,
Up until this moment, the modern approach to nuclear non-proliferation has been one that emphasized cooperation around the restriction and containment of weapons grade isotopes. That’s because other than the fuel, there is nothing anyone can do at this point to prohibit any other nation from building a practical nuclear or even thermonuclear weapon capable of significant devastation. It’s not a secret.

Just as in 2001, when the consensus of global expert opinion was that Iraq had no active program for WMD development, the presumption today is that somehow Israel and Fat Hitler have magic information nobody else knows about. But here’s the thing, IF Iran does not currently have access to enough weapons grade isotope to fuel a credible weapons program (as seems very likely given our history in this regard), following these attacks by first Israel, and now the United States, it’s quite inevitable that in the very near future they will. And that has nothing to do with bunkers or bunker bombs.

Because a line will form to supply them with weapons grade isotopes from other nations and regimes that (justifiably) have grave suspicions and concerns about both Israel (actively engaging in genocide) and the U.S. (engaged in false diplomacy with Iran while preparing the attack). We can level Iran, fight door-to-door, and clear the place of every possible scrap of nuclear fuel (and at this point we will probably have to) and they can still produce a dirty bomb and set it off in Times Square.

I’m very sorry to say it, but I think the totality of circumstances makes a prolonged military engagement with Iran now impossible to avoid. I think this attack will have effectively eliminated Iran’s need to independently develop weapons grade fuel and any incentive they might have to decline to do so. And if the line in the proverbial sand is no nukes in Iran, the only way the U.S. can ensure that in the near term is to go to war seeking to topple the current regime. At this point it will be perfectly rational for them to see their own survival contingent upon quickly obtaining a nuclear deterrent capability. And plenty of other nations will be happy to oblige.

Then you should have voted for her, right? Why didn’t you?

Know this: I’m against Iran having a bomb, and for stopping them from having a bomb. But doing it with diplomacy is vastly more preferable to bombing another country, and since Trump is no good at diplomacy, bombing is all that’s left.

Even so, going this route is very questionable, absent evidence that Iran was building a bomb or was about to. Rather, this act of war against a foreign country is solely a result of Israel deciding to preemptively attack Iran at this time, and Trump being Netanyahu’s willing water boy.

With a different person in the White House, whether Hillary, Harris, Biden, or even a different Republican, it’s debatable whether this act of war, fraught as it is with risks of a much wider war and reinvigorated terrorism against Americans, would ever have been necessary at all.

There are reasons why other presidents didn’t do this.

But when dumbfucks elect a dumbfuck, rash acts with unpredictable consequences are what you get. The one thing we know for sure from historical experience is that it’s easier to get into wars than to get out of them. And knowing Trump’s incapability, it’ll fall to some other president to get us out of whatever mess he just created.

Why can’t our Party just say it’s great we achieved the objective and destroyed Iran’s nuclear sites, god bless the soldiers who carried this out and made it home safely, god bless our country, military, allies, and we look forward to a full intel briefing. 🇺🇸. If one must then assert Congressional authority at the moment, add that any escalation will require congressional approval. And if you must, express concern for where this may go and what might come next.

But, for so many in my Party to knee jerk with unhinged calls for impeachment – and sadly omit in their statement support for Iran not having nuclear weapons, which has been a principle of our Party for 40 years -is truly TDS.

Trump did not need congressional approval for one precision attack

    This is technically correct.

But it’s also clear that the realities of modern, global security and how it dovetails directly into security and commercial interests and alliances renders existing laws insufficient. The logic of these circumstances is so imperative that it will be a miracle if this attack does not proceed to involve the United States in a prolonged, direct military engagement against Iran and whatever willing allies it assembles. Nor is it likely that any ally other than Israel will be available to assist the U.S. And finally a profoundly complex and vexing calculus must be faced before the United States can willingly invite Israel into any such direct conflict fighting alongside U.S. forces.

So in the end, the overpowering risk is that the United States will have been committed to a prolonged, “boots on the ground”
solo conflict against one of the most advanced and powerful modern militaries in the Middle East and some group of their allies fighting to defend territory while we struggle to support a supply chain extending from half a world away. And all of it may be forced upon us without any popular public support, without any legislative consent, and for the only practical purpose of rehabilitating yet another promising Republican alcoholic.

In the days ahead the onanistic cheerleading of dupes like the Nazi Fucktard and other media trolls will combine with the pugilistic declarations of the MAGAts in the administration to wed our security policy to a “nuclear free” Iran. And as it becomes increasingly clear that this “one precision attack” was obviously incapable of ensuring that outcome, the mission creep will set in, as it always does when craven and feckless politicians play “God of War”.

I hope we don’t end up being drawn into another prolonged conflict someplace far away with names we have yet to learn, just to prop up the “warrior” images of a draft dodger and an alcoholic. But whether we do or not, our laws should reflect the gravity of these kinds of careless and indifferent misuses of the few Americans still willing to give everything in service to our national security.

Yeah, people say, ‘Well, you don’t know a ton about the Middle East.’ Like, that’s fine. I don’t want people I know, my friends, getting called up. I don’t want the children of my friends getting called over to die. I don’t even understand how it’s an option.

I felt like it was supposed to be America first, like, we’re focusing on, like, ‘What are we doing to get things back into America,’ right? To like, increase like the purpose of being an American, to refill our hearts with blood and … make us feel something again here, and make us be excited about being an American.

it feels like we are just working for Israel.

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
