History Guy did a great video on the 1933-34 Air Mail Emergency. When the Post Office revoked the contracts of the airlines carrying the mail, they put the fledgeling Army Air Corps into a tough spot. The mail was flown at night, and many airmen lacked instrument training. The Army Chief of Staff was still Arthur MacArthur’s son, the head of the Air Corps was General Benjamin Fulois, literally one of the earliest Army Pilots. For the number of crashes and fatalities that happened during the emergency, it seemed all for naught because the corrupt airlines found a way to bid for the contract routes they lost.

    https://youtu.be/HexVV4ZwHWY?si=kBnf7QO84BCJmzAK

A Big player wilt the corruption, some guy named William Boeing.

The weeks before the new contracts were announced, exposed that the Army Air Corps wasn’t going to be able to fight a war. Biggest problem? Obsolete planes, and airmen reporting to non-airmen. Most units were under the authority of the local corps commander. Following the scandal, first efforts to put combat aircraft into the General HQ Air Force, happened. Looking at the order of Battle of the USAAC in 1935, the commander of GHQ AF’s 1st Wing, Henry Arnold, despite defending Mitchell, looks like he still had a chance to salvage his career.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Air_Corps

Interesting, after the Air Mail Scandal, as Boeing’s attempt to monopolize building engines, planes, and running an airline,Bill Boeing retired from the company, but not long after, they entered a prototype for a bomber competition , the Model 299 and after the crash and Martin winning the contract with the B-10, the Air Corps still saw the potential in the 299, and good thing too, the prototype did eventually go into production, as the B-17.

Good gawd, that Vimeo video of the Tesla FSD mowing down children is going super-viral blowing up platforms.

That’s some highly monetizable content, apparently. Not unlike the other videos that the professional YouTuber made of FSD blowing through brick walls because it couldn’t “see” through heavy rain.

It’d be a real shame if that were to spawn thousands of wannabe copycats on all the platforms. Yup. A real shame.

There’s metal detector screening, but no one asks you to do anything other than to remove certain items and to check your pockets for anything you might have left on your person.

Bullshit dumbfuck.. During a break from jury duty I once walked into a federal building in Seattle. Didn’t know it was federal.. It was a newer build tucked away.. off the beaten track in downtown Seattle. Saw the metal detectors and right away I asked by security what my business was. I wanted to read the building directory. They told me Social Security and Passport services were available but it was obvious to me there was a lot more to that building than that. FBI, Homeland Security whatever..

    … antivax stupidity …

    Maybe. I’ll grant you that.

But you need to look beyond “stupidity” and look at some of the reasons for vaccine skepticism.

What happened in the US pandemic response is really inexcusable. So many intentional lies, so many belated admissions that the vaccines did less than advertised, so many belated admissions that the vaccines in many cases did so much more harm than good.

The CDC embarrassed itself in numerous ways, and the NIH and the NIAID behaved criminally. It’s no coincidence that Fauci received a pardon from any and all criminal behavior.

The US voters got wise to it and then got sick of it. Now we’ll have a complete reworking of the advisory committee, and the CDC and the FDA know the rules of the game are different and the old ways will no longer be tolerated.

We’re about to begin a 3-plus year conversation about vaccines, their benefits, and their risks. It is a conversation long overdue.

Vaccine skepticism in this regard is healthy in that people might begin to understand why they trusted in the past, how that trust was abused, and how best (or whether) to trust in the future.

Prediction: Randi Weingarten will not be a part of it. Not this time.

finally got “teh wuhan”.. the kid brought it in the house, he tested himself when showing flu symptoms and the test was negative. He should have tested a second time but we all bought the illusion that it was just the flu.

    We let our guard down.

I started feeling it a week after the kid.

Spent two days in bed and by the third felt I was turning the corner.. the whole first two days felt, this isn’t the worst flu I’ve had but pretty damn close. One fucking thing after another. Relentless cough which subsided then back pains that I thought were in my kidneys, then an acid stomach. Eating salty styrofoam noodle soup helped a lot. You had to maintain energy to fight this thing but no I didn’t feel much like eating. I felt I could starve this thing out. Nope. Small stretches of sleep felt like they were heaven sent. If I could only sleep, I’d wake up and this would be over. At one point I dreaded I’d feel this way for the rest of my life.

But the third day, yep, it broke very noticeably but I still didn’t feel much like getting out of bed.

On the fourth day, my wife got sick.

Ok three days and lingering symptoms. On the sixth or seventh day I had my first cup of coffee since I got sick. It tasted like crap. When my wife heard that she immediately tested herself and she was positive. I tested myself and was positive. Holy shit.

And how many jabs have you had?

Four, before enough evidence accumulated for me to decide on my own that the risk/benefit profile for me was not favorable.

I’ve heard for 3 months maybe.

Naturally acquired immunity should last longer than vaccine-induced immunity. If you were last vaccinated in January, and you think that only three months of benefit results, then your protection would have elapsed by April. Unless you were ill in early April, there is little reason to believe that the vaccine helped you fight it off if you don’t believe that your natural immunity post-infection will last longer than three months.

I’m merely pointing out the inconsistency in your rationale, Welfare Queen YLB.

This might be why you think you only get three months of protection:

    People who recently had COVID-19
If you recently had COVID-19, you may delay getting a COVID-19 vaccine for 3 months after symptoms started OR after receiving a positive test with no symptoms

    https://www.cdc.gov/covid/vaccines/stay-up-to-date.html

What’s written is not the same as saying you only get three months of immunity. Instead it suggests you should overlap vaccine-induced immunity with naturally acquired immunity within three months of being infected.

If you only get three months of immunity from a vaccine or from an infection the CDC wouldn’t be recommending vaccines at 6-month intervals.

Given the Zoo pays private security for their concerts they felt a SWAT van at an Aging Brit’s concert attended by mostly aged GenXers was kind of provocative and unnecessary so they asked them to leave.

Command officer gets all huffy insisting it’s city property and THEY ARE THE POLICE until WPZ called a private towing company to have the vehicle removed from their private lot. By this time someone had the good sense to inform command officer that, no. He can’t commandeer private property and they left.

Everyone should read Ta-Nehisi Coates’ essay “The Gigantic Dream” from his latest book, “The Message”:

Avner and I visited what I can only call an archaeological amusement park, the City of David—a sprawling complex on a hillside abutting the Old City of Jerusalem. ..

I purchased a ticket and then wandered into the heart of the complex, which was built around a portion of an archaeological dig dating back to the late nineteenth century..

And what I was seeing here seemed about as credible as the history behind those Confederate memorials. The City of David employed a sheen of ancient provenance and archaeological science, but it was still unclear to me whether this had ever been a city or had ever been ruled by a king named David.

“Is this the City of David?” I asked Alon.

“It is an Iron Age city from two hundred years later than King David’s reign,” he said.

“So he’s basically dead by the time this—”

Alon interrupted, “I don’t think he ever lived.”

He said this in the matter-of-fact way befitting his profession—swatting away the kind of myth a layperson would take as history.

Here Alon abandoned his clinical disposition and raised his voice. The City of David “managed to get so mainstream that the American ambassador comes here and declares that this place is part of the glorious heritage of the United States of America abroad,” he said. “Now there is an American heritage abroad. It’s usually cemeteries in Normandy. Yeah, that’s American heritage abroad. City of David is not. And when you talk about white supremacy and when you talk about how things look here, this is why I think that the Evangelical church and the settlers found each other as a perfect match. Their mindset is the same. They do other things, but their mindset is the same—”

I interrupted Alon: “I gotta take a second. Let me just sit down.”…

This effort that I saw, the use of archaeology, the destruction of ancient sites, the pushing of Palestinians out of their homes, had the specific imprimatur of the United States of America. Which means that it had my imprimatur. This was not just another evil done by another state, but an evil done in my name.

The preceding is just my effort at lending a taste.. and it’s almost impossible to do it justice. You really have to read the whole thing. The essay cascades, piles fact up fact. It builds and it’s overwhelming. To this point I’ve read very little of him. Damn he’s good.

    About election fraud …

A Newsweek article dated June 10 says a “nonpartisan watchdog group filed [a] lawsuit over voting discrepancies in Rockland County, New York,” which is part of the NYC metro area and went 55%-44% for Trump.

The article says, “The lawsuit could renew debate about the 2024 election, though it won’t change the outcome since Congress has certified the results declaring President Donald Trump the winner.” That’s correct; any debate now about 2024 election discrepancies is academic, because once an election is certified, it’s over — for better or worse.

The article alludes to “unconfirmed reports that voting machines were secretly altered before ballots were cast in November’s election.” For details, read the article, which also says, “According to the complaint, more voters have sworn in legal affidavits that they voted for independent U.S. Senate candidate Diane Sare than the Rockland County Board of Elections counted and certified, contradicting those results. The complaint also cited numerous statistical anomalies in the presidential election results.”

According to Wikipedia, Sare, a LaRouche candidate, got 39,413 votes statewide, less than 1/2% of the total cast. The New York Board of Elections website says Sare got 397 votes in Rockland County, compared to 15,366 blank and 199 void ballots. So we’re talking about a tiny number of ballots out of 152,249 cast.

So here’s how Roger Rabbit sees things. Elections don’t have to be perfect, they only have to produce a fair result, and nearly all elections of any size have some discrepancies, which are material only if they alter the result.

There’s a process for challenging ballots and election results that runs through the courts, is subject to deadlines, and once a result is certified, it’s final however imperfect it may later be discovered to be, with this exception: Courts can, in some circumstances, set aside an election result. Also, Congress can refuse to certify an election, and refuse to seat a House or Senate winner. The main thing here is following the process and accepting the result produced by the process.

Now let me address post-election second-guessing, which isn’t necessarily sour grapes; there can be genuine concerns about how an election was conducted or what led to the result. But democracy is consensual, and accepting election results even when they’re disputed is vital to maintaining the democratic system, so there’s a presumption of legitimacy, and extraordinary claims (of illegitimacy) should require extraordinary proof.

Therefore, I’m skeptical of anecdotal evidence, statistical analyses, and other secondary methods of evaluating election results. The primary evidence of an election result is the ballots themselves and the official ballot counts, and if the legal process for resolving challenges has been properly followed, I will be very skeptical of this kind of post-election armchair second-guessing. It’s akin to postgame armchair quarterbacking after your fav football team loses. It’s a good analogy, because like sports, the election officiating may not have been perfect but the score is what it is.

This isn’t simple stuff to understand, and the average person doesn’t know much about it, so a lot of the public is open to this kind of armchair quarterbacking. I’ve been a trained pollworker, an official recount observer, a volunteer voting rights attorney, have set through legal seminars on elections and voting rights, so I’m way above the average person in understanding how the system works and my reaction to this lawsuit is this: The plaintiffs have a right to bring it, the court should dispose of it as the law requires, and if the court’s findings indicate problems in how this disputed election was conducted, the election administrators should fix those problems and try to do better next time.

With that approach in mind, I have not at any point disputed the 2024 election results. Ultimately, the voters who re-elected Trump are responsible for this administration. And the fact they did persuades me that America isn’t as good a country, and Americans as a whole aren’t as good people, as we’d like to think they are. Our entire history — slavery, treatment of Native Americans, Japanese-American internments, Jim Crow, the KKK, past presidents and administrations — confirms that human nature isn’t better in America than elsewhere. So if we want good to win out over bad, we have to work constantly to make sure it does, by educating our fellow citizens are calling upon their better angels to do the right thing, and to vote to make sure we have a government that does the right thing. It’s fragile, and frequently breaks down, as it did once again in 2024.

Hey, we’re not helping the Israelis do anything to Palestinians that we didn’t do to Native Americans ourselves. Some tribes pushing other tribes off land they want for themselves is as old as human society.

However, remember the author is a black man who through his research for his journalism has read the letters and other writings of slaves and ostensibly “freed” black people struggling with oppression.

He had to sit for a moment because everything he had seen in his 10 days in Israel/Palestine had gotten to him. He took what was being done in his name very personally.

That said his experience is not that unique, so to speak, than that of many American Jews who visit Israel and are appalled by what they see. Coates’ experience stands out by being black and having immersed himself deeply in the written record of black oppression in America which informs all his writing, most notably his essay on the case for reparations for slavery.

We took the ferry from Whidbey and the train from Mukilteo to take in this afternoon’s Mariners game.

Post-game, we return to the train. We sit in the train for 10 minutes before an announcement comes across that there is a delay and it might be a long one, because of something that happened north of Edmonds. We weren’t told if the train would make it to Edmonds.

So we left the train and headed to the light rail station. Along with everyone else. The first one was full and we barely squeezed onto the second one. At the Lynnwood transit center we switched to a Community Transit bus that departs once per hour for the ferry dock.

Home was train–>> light rail –> bus –> ferry –> EV.

It was an afternoon commute Railfan would have loved. He can have it.

Oh. Someone was struck and killed by the train in Edmonds, right in front of the ferry dock road. Both the train and the Edmonds-Kingston ferry run have been completely shut down, for hours.

Public transit kills. Write that down.

Two weeks ago, Will Hand, 14, of Greenville, South Carolina, was a healthy teenager. Last Sunday, only days after the first symptoms of meningococcal septicemia appeared, he was dead.

Say, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, that article doesn’t say the kid wasn’t vaccinated. Neither does the magazine piece it references.

Turns out the kid had AIDS, was immunocompromised, and died despite being vaccinated because he let gay men do him bareback, and he really loved it when it hurt.

OK, that’s not in the article, either. But perhaps now you get my point. He might have not been vaccinated. He might have died from septic complications of HIV infection. We don’t know.

Vaccines are the “best protection” against the infection, per the CDC.

Staying out of the sun is the best protection against squamous cell carcinoma.

But some people stay out of the sun and still end up developing and dying of squamous cell carcinoma.

The MAGA-crazed radical gun-humping anarchist mass shooter who survived was prevented from carrying out his orders from Alex Jones and Groyper TV.

Ideally guys like that wouldn’t have access to converted military assault weapons with massive capacity magazines. And ideally they wouldn’t be set into motion by a major political party now re-founding itself purely on political violence. But since we are denied that kind of simple community safety in America today thanks to Republicans, we have to settle for armed self defense in crowded public settings where an innocent bystander can get shot in order to save the lives of hundreds of others.

It’s a truly awful calculus that is 100% forced upon all Americans by pro-gun Republicans.

Asha Rangappa has more to say about it here:
    https://asharangappa.substack.com/p/class-37-this-is-your-brain-this

It’s better to just start off by admitting the basic humanity of all people and that it’s really terrible when people get killed, rather than trying to find an ideology or identity to scapegoat. But there is an exception. That’s where the ideology is one that celebrates pointless suffering and death, the way MAGA and Fat Hitler now do routinely.
