    Been following this train, originally during planning called the TCMC, now as it actually is running, the Borealis. Mostly Minnesota was pushing for it, although it does serve Milwaukee en route to Chicago. Finally happened this year, although I thought that CPKC’s promise to get merger approval only applied to proposed New Orleans-Baton Rouge service. Amtrak was surprised about Borealis’s success.

    CalTrain already mentioning benefits of electrified service between Sam Jose and San Francisco. The new schedule takes effect in a month when most of the Diesels will be sidelined, except for the Gilroy trains, as only CalTrain owned track is wired. Better acceleration is reducing run times for both Limiteds and Locals, but the Baby ZBullet is being retired.

    Hydrogen trains will be replacing some Amtrak California services, so,e advocates are opposed to that, outside of public owned track, it’s the best non-diesel option. Although some of the reviews on siting and permitting electric rail infrastructure might be streamlined under a bill that cleared the assembly and heading to Governor Newsom’s desk.

    Some are complaining about the fate of some of the Diesel locomotives being declared surplus. They are for sale, but inoperable, under California regulations.

    6)Been reading a couple books “Primary Solution “ and “Parliamentary America “. On the latter, I went from opposed to willing to hear out the author’s ideas. Always been for expanding the House, 435 seemed great in 1912, but the country’s bigger. His idea is only to double it, to 870, but keep the 435 districts, and use the other 435 as a compensatory tier like Germany. I don’t think I am onboard with his other reforms, but I haven’t gotten to the chapter where a multiparty Congress instead of the EC elects the President. Would be opposed to that , but keeping an open mind until I read that chapter. He would have the threshold be 5% like Germany, but give the Senate the ability to change that, with the amendment proposed, exempting such a change from the filibuster.

    While I like MMP, and think it will work in 98 out of 99 state legislative chambers, for Congress, because seats are apportioned by state, I have often thought, States choice.

    What’s weird to me about that is the fact that, according to his bio, Diet Private worked as a combat correspondent in Iraq. If he actually did the work he would have had thousands of encounters with Marines on deployment asking them about their backgrounds, where they grew up, what got them to join, their experiences as Marines, etc. Maybe he was just really shitty at the job. But he would have had ample opportunity to get better at it than this makes it appear.

    Seems we were just finishing a contentious US Railway Labor contract dispute. Because the Railway Labor Act delays strikes or lockouts, most contracts become retroactive, and they start the process over. Seems the next round, the unions and railroads are doing something different, bargaining before the existing contract becomes amendable, and the National Mediation Board process begins. A few have already settled.

    Will be interesting how the train attendants contract works, based on nothing more than advance ticket bookings, or the unavailability of them for specific accommodations on the Silver Star and Capitol Limited, there is a rumor going on that there might be a new Chicago-Miami service coming. After a certain date, the Family Bedroom on the Capitol is unavailable for the foreseeable future, and all sleeper accommodations north of Washington DC on the Silver Star. The Silver Star uses single level rolling stock, while the Capitol uses Superliners, which the family bedroom is only available on. Might give more clues . A potential Capitol Star if using single level stock, frees up Superliners for other routes that have capacity issues.

    23)Some of the various reforms I have seen proposed, would need a new convention. Too many amendments would be needed.

    Montana rewrote their State Constitution, and it barely passed, partly because of its environmental protections. The guys who wrecked Butte and Anaconda thought they could stop the new Montana Constitution. The privacy protections were probably influenced by a U.S. Supreme Court case that was about to be heard, and 50 years later, Montana voters have a chance to clarify that part.

    Seems the see saw battle with Canada’s two major railroads lockout/strike is over. After the Labor Minister referred it to the CIRB to order binding arbitration, the Railroads ended the lockout but Teamsters Canada Rail Conference continued picketing CPKC and issued a 72 hour strike notice. That was last night, today the CIRB acted and ordered binding arbitration, and the TCRC is complying, pending appeal.

    So I thought, what are the chances Trump may replace Vance with Kennedy? Which itself makes no sense. After doing some searching, and finding articles saying it would be difficult and he’s running out of time to do it, I dismissed it as highly improbable.

    The precedent, of course, is McGovern dumping Eagleton in 1972, but that happened a few days after Eagleton was nominated, after it was revealed he’d been hospitalized multiple times for depression.

    It’s fairly easy to visualize a veep candidate being replaced for a health reason. Eagleton was replaced because he was seen as unelectable because of a health condition. There’s no precedent for replacing a veep candidate because his selection was a political blunder. In any case, the GOP’s unelectability problem is Trump at least as much as Vance, and they’d probably be better off to dump Trump, elevate Vance, and find a new veep candidate.

    It’s hard to see anything at all happening given the disarray and infighting in the GOP. They’re pretty much stuck with what they’ve got whether they’re happy with it or not. So I think their jeep will just keep rolling down the hill without brakes until it goes off the edge of the cliff. The wiser passengers will be jumping off right about now.

    Illegals can’t vote.

    It’s NOT millions, it’s 10s, at most

    Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger conducted an audit of the state’s voter rolls in 2022 and found that 1,634 had attempted to register but all were caught and none were actually registered.

    It’s a fake issue, ginned up by republicans who cynically want votes from people who irrationally fear illegals.

    You want to stop most illegals? Put EVERYONE who hires them in jail for a year for each person they hire. From CEO to housewife. Why aren’t republican demanding that?
