We don’t learn about how capable the performers are to do the job. We don’t learn how they would pursue policy objectives. It is the political equivalent of circus seals balancing beach balls on their noses.

    And Trump delivers, always has. It’s how he first mowed through the crowded field of Republicans in 2016. He growls and sneers and mocks. He lies and shrugs and creates ridiculous claims and fantastic fake tales. He provokes and amuses. And he performs the moral panics for his audience of supporters and potential supporters just like the kayfabe in professional wrestling.

    Joe Biden does not.

    Maybe he can. Maybe he can learn quickly. I don’t know. But he needs to. It is imperative.

    Because unfortunately this is our politics. We have transformed what was a noble and uplifting pursuit of human improvement into entertainment for the hooting masses. And giant global media conglomerates now stand as gatekeepers between politicians and voters deciding who succeeds and who fails based on their ability to draw and retain an audience.

    Been following the development of the M-10 Booker Light Tank, although the Army calls it Mobile Protected Firepower. The Army was working on something similar in the 90s but canceled due to budget issues. It would have been a small purchase, mainly for the 82nd Airborne and 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. First unit to be equipped with the Booker looks like the 82nd Airborne Division, which would be the unit that needs it first. As the video mentions, while Abrams can be airlifted via C-17, it can’t be in combat ready configuration. The Buford was supposed to airdropped, but the army made that optional for the MPF.

    I remember Tom Clancy in his non-fiction book Armored Cav, mentioned the Buford and even showed a good scenario on how it could be employed in combat ops. It involved helping an ally in a hostage rescue situation. Set in Uganda, with Amin back(but spoiler alert, not for long), and aid workers being held hostage, with heavy armor on the airfield. A troop of the 2ACR giving the ally(France) Fire support for their special ops force in the raid. Tge conclusion after the rescue cracked me up when the 2ACR caught up with Amin.

    Really loved Tom Clancy’s non fiction books too, two looked like research for the climatic combat actions in Executive Orders. In Armored Cav, he visited Fort Irwin to observe Armored training, and the OPFOR’s ability to be deployed if necessary. If one has read Executive Orders, the 11th ACR was one of only two stateside units deployed to save the day. The deserts around Fort Irwin one of the few places the Weaponized Airborne Ebola virus didn’t hit, that plus the rest of the active army plus the Guard were enforcing a quarantine that made what was in effect during COVID look like nothing.(All air and rail travel suspended as state borders were closed).

    Fighter Wing, definitely a dated book now, as the 366th is now exclusively flying F-15 variants, but at the time, it was a unique unit flying F-15Cs for air superiority, F-16Cs for Air Defense Suppression, F-15Es for precision strike, and B-1Bs, plus one squadron of KC-135s. They felt entitled because it connected that campus with their other location. The writing was on the wall when they moved in, Metro didn’t need a route that not only competed with LINK, but one of their own routes, The 42 went all the way back to Seattle Municipal Railway era as the Empire Way Bus, and it ran through to downtown on Rainier because of the city’s troubles trying to buy out the Renton Interurban,. The moment the Rainier Ave Bus replaced the Interurban, SMR, and later Seattle Transit should have truncated the Empire Way Bus at Franklin High/Sicks Stadium. The current peak frequency on rt7 is every 7 1/2 minutes. The SMR had even closer frequencies, but Metro has bigger buses. Some European cities, a frequency like that leads to the route being converted to a tram. As for the 42, after Metro cut the 8 in two, they rerouted the 106 onto Ranier and then MLK. A couple more infill stations, may not need the 106 anymore. There is new trolleybus technology that I think would work well on 106, In Motion charging, it would allow for battery power where wires would cross. With short stretches on MLK, wire up Skyway, an electric 106 could go all the way into Renton.
