    I ran across a story tonight about a Florida sheriff whose office ran a Kafkesque program for several years that consisted of compiling a blacklist of individuals they considered potential future criminals and then harassed them into leaving the county.

    The practice was exposed by a local news organization that won a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting, and the sheriff ended it after he was sued by several of the “targets.” But he’s still sheriff, and is running for re-election this year.

    US foreign policy has become similar to the old British Empire. In WWI, what most Brits were most concerned about was the continuation of “the Empire,” not necessarily the fighting and winning in the trenches.

    Ever since the end of WWII, we Americans have maintained an overseas empire of huge proportions. We have over 900 bases all over the world, and it has caused us to think of ourselves as the “The Leader of the Free World.” We are no such thing!

    We insist on continuing this vast empire just as the Brits did after WWI. We have almost $35 trillion in debt to show for this US hegemony, and we will never pay this debt down. NEVER!

    The thing to do is to recognize we are drastically overextended financially and are essentially bankrupt. We should take the advice of such scholars as Professor John Mearsheimer from the University of Chicago: it’s time to wind-down the empire in a peaceful fashion to avoid nuclear war with Russia and/or China.

    We don’t have much time left.

    3. “Winding down” our alliances, reducing our military forces, and vacating our overseas bases would more likely make the world more rather than less dangerous, because it would create a power vacuum that China and Russia would be tempted to fill.

    4. The U.S. is not “bankrupt.” It cannot go “bankrupt,” because its treasury has the ability to create unlimited amounts of money.

    5. The U.S. does not have to “pay down” its debt; it can be rolled over indefinitely and eternally.

    6. The debt plays a vital role in the U.S. and global financial systems because Treasury bonds provide a safe place for own government, other governments, sovereign wealth funds, banks, insurance companies, investment companies, other institutions, and individuals to park funds, and eliminating them would make the financial system weaker, more volatile, and more vulnerable to panics and collapses.

    The UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees has voted to divert $2.3 million away from diversity, equity and inclusion programs and into “public safety.”

    The unanimous vote occurred at a special Board of Trustees meeting Monday morning. It is unclear if the diversion of funds would lead to layoffs.

    Marty Kotis is vice chair of the board’s budget and finance committee, which initially introduced and passed the “flex cut amendment.” Without citing specific examples, he called DEI programs “discriminatory and divisive.”
