    Across the country, the ‘actual increase in rates of theft’ at stores does not ‘correspond to the increase in company commentary and actions’ on theft ….” In actuality, theft losses have “remained steady for years,” while companies use crime as an excuse to distract attention from store overbuilding, poor inventory planning, and other management failures.

    The problem is, his link also states:

    The analysts noted that overall shrink — merchandise losses due to external and internal theft, damaged products, inventory mismanagement and other errors — makes up just 1.5% to 2% of retailers’ sales.

    and

    At nine major retailers that have increasingly cited the rising impact of theft, shrink as a percentage of sales increased just 0.4% in 2022, they found.

    If theft used to be 1.5 to 2% of sales and it’s now 0.4% higher, that’s an increase of 20-27%, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit.

    Yes. Theft is increasing.

    It’s not just that they’re exaggerating shrink.

    It’s also that this is all planned and accounted for.

    These types of retailers have suffered huge losses of daily turns and volume to online retailers, especially Amazon. And while it was going on for a while, it exploded during COVID. These losses in daily volume required operating adjustments. Much of it was accomplished with reductions in staffing. And what every retailer can tell you is that your single biggest detrrent for theft is staffing. Just warm bodies. The drone behind the counter who makes eye contact and says “hi” (because they can be written up if they fail to do so). Cutting retail floor staffing was absolutely known to produce a measurable increase in shrink. But the accounting showed that, at least initially, the savings in staffing would more than compensate for the increased shrink.

    Absolutely none of this is new or in any way peculiar to a certain city or location. These are time tested principles in retail. Self checkout is a great example. Self checkout always results in increased shrink. Always. People cheat. People make mistakes. But the labor savings are more than enough to pay for the increases shrink. So retailers install self checkout positions knowing and accepting in advance that shrink will measurably rise. It is planned for. It is strategic.

    But that certainly isn’t going to stop them from claiming increased shrink is the reason for breaking a lease, closing a location, and laying off more staff. Not if incompetent and overpaid management needs a good excuse to bamboozle shareholders.
    But the truth is they are closing locations because their operating plans are shitty and they can’t afford to keep these locations open any longer. The rents have risen too high and the volumes have not kept up. Customers aren’t responding to the same stupid, shitty bombardment of coupon sheets in their mailboxes. And increasing waves of boomer retirements have made it impossible to staff these locations. The lousy pay, lousy hours, lousy management, and lousy customers make it impossible to get most millennials to take jobs in these places.

    Long overdue revisions to felony theft statutes in plenty of states have played some role in the way retail theft is being portrayed and perceived. But a connection between very small measurable rates of increased shrink, and just as small reductions in the rates of arrests and prosecutions for retail theft are still speculative. What is known absolutely for sure is that police and prosecutors are angry about these revisions. Jurisdictions that held the felony threshold dollar amounts low were a police and prosecutor paradise.

    Once again we have to return to remedial Crim J 101 and remind the stupid troll that law enforcement isn’t at all how it has been portrayed to him planted in his smelly recliner in front of his seltering trailer big screen. The system runs entirely on pleas.
    And the absolute easiest plea of all is trading down a felony theft charge. Low dollar thresholds enable cops and prosecutors to juice their statistics which keeps the tax dollars flowing to pay for more comfortable places for them to sleep on the job while earning some of the highest incomes in municipal employment. The $400,000 cop nap is built on a giant mountain of lazy felony retail theft arrests.

    But the fact that the highest paid police patrol officer in the SPD is spending a significant portion of her shift in a roaring state of sleep apnea is probably some indication that there are police resources available to address even misdemeanor retail theft. There just isn’t any will among the police, their command, or among prosecutors to apply those resources.
    That might be something for voters to keep in mind as they scroll through all those obsucre names on those fall ballots.

    That doesn’t justify the Hamas terror attacks. But this is a war between two factions that more or less deserve each other, with innocent civilians of both sides caught in the middle.
