    The other night, accidentally engaged Emergency SOS on my phone but cancelled in time. When that happens, I check the SFD 911 log site to make sure no call went out. While searching for that, landed on the main site and learned about this gem of a new unit for the SFD. Energy One, a new piece of apparatus developed for putting out underground electrical fires.

    The SFD has always been innovative, although sometimes those new innovations came from tragedy, like tge procedures following the Pang Fire. There also was the example where the Police Guild backed tge SPD stealing the water rescue mission for the Harbor Patrol, when it should have been shared.(Paul Shell’s idea, sadly it took a death or two after the SFD units arrived on scene faster than SPD Divers to make him change it back). Medic One has proven its worth since day one, hope Health One, a new unit matching trained firefighters with on call social workers, especially in Mental Health situations, eventually does. Started in 2019, now up to three teams.

    Energy One could be added to another multi-agency fire apparatus, the Mobile Vent Unit. Tge MVU was purchased by Sound Transit after concerns by the Fire Marshal as the Sounder AN line was entering service. Specifically evacuation of the Great Northern Tunnel. The MVU is a huge truck mounted fan, and was nearly called out early on for the job it was purchased for, before it was determined to be lingering exhaust from a previous train.(Wouldn’t have happened if Great Northern had electrified the entire Scenic Sub).

At the same time, the company has been taking yields higher on the freight it hauls. The operational changes and yield initiatives were reasons for the tonnage declines in the past, but it is now likely that some customers may be diverting freight to other providers to avoid service interruptions should labor actions occur.

    Teamsters might strike Yellow to death. But hey, at least they’ll be sending a message to UPS when they do it. After all, freight rates will go up when Yellow dies, and UPS will benefit, and the Teamsters will want a cut of that.

    One of the big sticking points is that Yellow wants drivers to help load the trucks they will then haul, because Yellow is a partial-load hauling company.
