    Today Honolulu finally opened a portion of the Skyline Automated light rapid transit system. Running from Aloha Stadium to the area Weat of Pearl Harbor. Hopefully the portion between Aloha Stadium and Daniel Inouye International Airport, supposedly within 2 years.     Also, an interesting appearance of railroading past made a splash on Union Pacific a few days ago in Nebraska. A freight train got stalled, and the train behind it gave it a shove. No ordinary train, the locomotive giving it a shove was UP 4014, a steam locomotive. Although it had a few wheel slips, 4014 before retired to a museum in Pomona in the 60s, was a 1940s 4-8-8-4 class, designed for hauling heavy freight trains at 80mph in the Wasatch Front. This wasn’t the first time post-dieselization that a steam locomotive on UP has bailed out a diesel. 844, the only steamer never to be retired by a Class 1 has done it a few times.

    Patient deaths from anesthesia in recent years – past 30 or so – have declined from 1/5,000 to 1/200,000 procedures. That’s a 40-fold drop in patient mortality associated with anesthesia, and it’s despite more and more dangerous procedures being done as medicine has advanced.

    The reasons are numerous, but notably among them are the development of 1) pulse oximeters, which easily measure tissue oxygen content, and 2) CO2 monitors, which among other purposes confirm that the endotracheal tube is placed in the trachea and not in the esophagus (lungs contain CO2, the stomach doesn’t).
