@7 I guess it depends on how you define “merit.” Scott is for replacing the progressive income tax with a 30% federal sales tax, repealing Obamacare, forcing immigrants to speak English, and is against women’s reproductive freedom, the Paris climate accords, and treating LGBQT people like human beings. And Barack certainly did not have the breadth of experience that Hillary did.
If breadth of experience was the only factor we would have elected Bill Richardson in 2008:
• Staffer on Senate Foreign Relations
• Staffer in the State Department
• Congressman – Chair of the Hispanic Caucus
• Ambassador to the UN
• Secretary of Energy
• Governor of New Mexico
Honorable mention:
• Three-time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize
• Commerce Secretary nominee (OK, OK, this was after the 2008 election)
I submit that the election of Barack Obama and his two-term presidency should have ended criticism of a candidate merely because of a comparative shortfall in “experience”. Clearly there is more to a candidate’s skillset.
If that’s not sufficiently persuasive, one must certainly agree that experience isn’t always what counts to the American public, come that certain quadrennial early November period.

Can I be tresspassed from a public park in DC?
Under certain conditions I could be.
Those conditions did not exist last Wednesday when the GOP Klown Konspiracy Kaukus arranged to put on a performance in a public park area adjacent to the Capitol. That was a deliberate choice on their part. They hoped to draw a large crowd from the masses of tourists who normally are present and would be interested in seeing “real” members of Congress doing “a thing” without having to wait in a long line. Having numbers present makes the “thing” seem real when properly photographed and recorded. The technique is common these days for members like these craving attention and notice.
But on this day the mistake they made was that another, officially planned Medicare For All event had just been held nearby in a controlled access venue, hosted by Senator Bernie Sanders, which was attended by large numbers of Senator Sanders’ nationwide network of supporters. As they were leaving the Senator’s event as a group, heading toward a metro station, they encountered the Republican KKK performance and took interest in it. It being a public place with no access control and no special use permit, those people had precisely the same legal rights to loudly express themselves as the KKK House members did. Asking “difficult” questions in public is precisely the sort of subject matter the framers intended to be protected when they were drafting The Bill of Rights.
These kinds of vocal confrontations are now a normal part of life in areas around the Capitol. The DC police are used to it. And they don’t step in to interfere unless someone breaks the law. It was just such a verbal confrontation that the Smirking MAGA Teen™ blundered into in 2019.
https://youtu.be/Hgw2546Xy7g
Imagine if then newly elected NM House member Deb Haland had suddenly appeared out of the crowd and driven the Smirking MAGA Teen™ out into the street? She wouldn’t do it of course. Because she isn’t insane, which is more than anyone can possibly say for Clay Higgins.

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
Being reminded that the Dumbfuck trolls of HA, like the Shit-lord Crybaby, have bought fully into the Big Lie is very reassuring to me.
The most recent post election voter file data from the 2022 midterms very consistently demonstrates that there are a few specific pieces of GOP messaging that are the most persuasive at moving non-aligned voters toward the Democrat candidate in swing districts and “tossup” contests. And The Big Lie is among the top three and had a very demonstrable effect at changing outcomes.
It’s a beautiful trap.
Even GOP primary candidates willing to directly challenge and criticize Trump by name dare not go there. At the very least any GOP primary candidate must pretend ignorance and remain mute. But failing to ratify the loony paranoia that animates the Republican base is alienating to those voters. Held now in the grip of a cult-like belief system they are constantly vigilant for evidence of apostasy. Chris Sununu will never register beyond single digits for that reason. And the more loudly he denies The Big Lie the lower his numbers will drop.
But conceding to Trump’s lie automatically concedes a forty point floor to Trump’s primary support. Fat Midget’s best and frankly vain hope lies in convincing every other candidate to drop out (or stay out) so he can compete for the remaining 60% and somehow win 85% of it. So it’s even more reassuring to see these idiots celebrating an expanding field. That is almost guaranteed to deliver the nom to Trump. Brilliant!

I’d like to see the age for military service raised to 21, with the voting age, age for alcohol and/or cannabis purchases (where legal) all 21. Here’s a little gem I stumbled across: Republicans want to build roads with radioactive waste.
You missed the important part, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, which is that the material also contains sulfates and heavy metals – lead, notably – and those can leach out with rainwater.
The disposal of the radioactivity in the highway concrete is one of the smartest things that can be done – people don’t stand on highways, and the radioactivity won’t penetrate vehicles, particularly if it’s covered by a layer of asphalt. If one accepts that the material has to go somewhere, and the other places it can go risk leaks into the environment, then encasing it in concrete to decay naturally and harmlessly is a much better concept.
Don’t whine about the radioactivity, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit. Spend your time on the sulfate/heavy metal aspects of the material. That’s what counts.

Only one of these questions would get a majority yes and it’s LITERALLY the one thing Republicans have said is completely off the table.
So Fuck that poll. It’s meaningless.

Each of the most recent Republican administrations has presided over a shrinking US economy. And each of the most recent Democratic administrations has grown the economy – despite every effort by Republicans to prevent it.
That growth and prosperity didn’t happen by itself. We don’t need to look far to see that truth. Just look at the economic performance under both Bushes and Trump. These people are idiots, still worshipping to a trickle down false god they lost faith in decades ago. Their massive tax cuts were paid for with cuts to the things that make the US economy grow sustainably. And so, quite predictably, a handful of greedy billionaire families enjoyed a tax cut that amounted to a rounding error on their tax filings. And the US economy shrank while the debt grew. Because of Republicans.

Note at the end of Trump’s presidency (from bea.gov):
33.4% in Q3 of 2020 is something Biden hasn’t accomplished. And 33.4% in Q3 and 40% is growth, not shrinkage.
Now, I’ll point out that between 2021 Q4 and 2022 Q1, Biden’s economy shrank, from plus 7% to minus 1.6%. Q2 of 2022 also was negative, and once upon a time two consecutive quarters of GDP contraction was the definition of a recession. If a Republican was president it would still be called a recession.
President Trump’s tenure included 14 quarters of GDP growth. Biden’s term won’t be better than 14, and quite possibly could be significantly worse.

The other would be a legal contest that would get before the Supremes quickly. And that would leave it to the weakest of The Six (Roberts and DateRape) to decide if they want the collapse of the global economy to be laid at their feet along with the complete delegitimisation of the court.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
I should say that I do believe that President Biden is sincerely trying to help Brave Kevin out of the trap he’s in and keep his dream job.
Obviously Biden can’t accept the terms that Republicans are trying to impose. Republicans are demanding in essence a “lesser of two evils” choice between default, bankrupting the US Treasury, and a global financial meltdown or the “lesser evil” of a prolonged economic recession brought on by huge cuts to essential government services, and massive layoffs rippling through the economy through the end of next year.
So at least on the White House side of the negotiations they are trying to calculate what kinds of new limitations they can offer that won’t produce a recession and soaring unemployment. And along with that develop some strategies and messaging that can help Brave Kevin sell those limitations to enough of his House members to survive.
I could not begin to imagine what the negotiations on the Republican House side would really look like. Except to point out that there’s a good chance Biden’s basic optimism about people is leading him astray. Because I think there are in fact a real majority of House Republicans who will not settle for anything short of a recession and soaring unemployment by the end of this year or early next year. They need to ruin the economy to get reelected, to gain seats, and to win back the White House for Trump.
Looming over that lies the inescapable fact that Brave Kevin is the weakest House Speaker in more than a century. And he simply lacks the intelligence and human skills to sell whatever Biden delivers to him. Biden is one of the most talented legislative politicians of his generation. He can work the chambers to line up the votes from the Senate and the House Democrats. But in the end he will have to rely on a uniquely weak Speaker to close the deal.
Biden will have a plan B. But given how ugly plan A is, I don’t expect it to be pretty.

T bond rollovers – The Treasury hangs on to the principal from the bond being retired. Once the interest is paid, there’s a reset at new terms but the cash doesn’t flow out of the Treasury.
Payments on contracts – They’re made, late. Doesn’t hurt the creditworthiness of the nation. Hell, half the time the contractors are behind on delivery. You saw that scene in Dave, right?
Other obligations – They’re satisfied, late. Doesn’t hurt the creditworthiness of the nation.

One reason Yellen is whining so much about early June is that once the country gets to mid-June, the Treasury’s in fat city for several more weeks.
Ask yourself, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, why Goldman Sachs predicts no problems until mid-summer, while Yellen is trying to convince Americans that the sky could fall on June 1.

And little wonder that Axios would rely entirely on their own previous opinionating propped up by a single opinion poll that has little to do with actual electoral performance.
Voter file data from the last two major elections don’t show any of this claimed “drift” of Blacks and non-white Hispanics toward the GOP. Actually, the opposite.
Nor do they provide any evidence of the existence of the fabled “Socially Conservative/Fiscally Liberal” unicorn voter having impacts on elections. And even if such mythological voters exist in any real numbers statewide in swing states, none of the wish-casters can offer up a theory for why/how such voters would prefer a GOP devoted to sweeping curtailment of civil rights, billionaire tax cuts, hyper-aggressive sport-murdering cops, expanding the Prison-Industrial Complex, gutting of public education, and openly cavorting with and welcoming party leaders who self-describe as “white nationalists”.
This plus “Trump/GOP pivot” is a tired shibboleth of the chin-rubbing feckless media that helped produce an acknowledged attempt to overturn a national election with violence.
At least one part of this myth contains some tiny, ephemeral mote of truthiness to it: there are indeed “Socially Conservative/Fiscally Liberal” people out there, which is more than anyone can say for their opposites, the truly mythological “Socially Liberal/Fiscally Conservative”. But the problem is they don’t even register to vote.
