    Doubt that Justice Thomas will get forced out like Abe Fortis.

    It’s Fortas, not Fortis, and the two cases are incredibly dissimilar.

    There are two separate and serious problems here that go well beyond the fact that Fortas received money from friends and former law clients. One, Wolfson was not just some random friend. He was a man in serious hot water with federal authorities — which would lead to his conviction — and thus in more immediate need of cultivating influential legal friends. Two, and arguably more scandalously, Fortas was actively, personally engaged in giving legal and political advice to the president, including compromising the Court’s own secrecy. The president is not an ordinary citizen; the executive branch is a ubiquitous litigant before the Court. LBJ was not just a personal friend; Fortas was involved with his official duties at the time when LBJ nominated Fortas to be chief justice.

    Moreover, while it was not public at the time of his resignation, Fortas doubtless knew that the facts were even worse:

    After Fortas resigned, Wolfson secretly recorded a 1970 conversation with Fortas that revealed that Fortas had advised Wolfson (while a justice) on his legal difficulties with the SEC. When Wolfson referenced a 1969 letter he sent to Fortas asking for his help in obtaining a presidential pardon, Fortas responded, “Lou, don’t tell the press about that. . . . Because, Lou, that would really look bad. . . . Lou, I will not burden you on what happened after that 1969 letter. . . . Sometime, you know, several years from now when this is all over I will tell you exactly what happened.”

    Giving legal advice to a man in the bullseye of a federal investigation and what appears to be Fortas’s involvement in a plan to fix things for Wolfson via a pardon are fairly direct examples of corruption. Cohen should have told his readers this.

Nixon’s men practiced a form of extortion (not the first or last time) by threatening both Fortas and his wife, to get him off the court, so Nixon could appoint Clement Haynsworth, and when that nomination failed, George Carswell, and when that nomination failed, they settled for Harry Blackmun.

    If Democrats pressure Thomas to leave the court, they won’t be doing anything that Republicans didn’t do first. And they should do it, based on the Baseball Rules which Doctor Dumbfuck is familiar with: If your pitcher hits our batter, our pitcher will hit one of your batters. As I’ve often said, Democrats need to behave more like Republicans, so they don’t be constantly steamrolled.

    With the Port of Tacoma’s sprawling acreage, and the various waterways that split the terminals including Hylebos and Thea Foss , might be a good idea for tge TFD to beef up the Fireboats, mainly staffing. Looks like tge TFD still cross-staffs tge Fireboats with Engine Companies. Not sure if the SFD has Marine 4 and Engine 5 be tge same crew. They share station 5 next to Colman Dock though.     I learned a lot from this. Had no idea that Kona beers are also brewed in Woodinville, but it explains why such shitty beer shows up in the beer case at Payless grocery store in Freeland.

    I’m guessing that retail inflation of craft ales is in the neighborhood of 25% or so since early 2020. Typically there is only one “craft” ale selling at less than $10 for a six-pack at Payless. A pint at the bar counter is up roughly a buck, or maybe 14-16% over that period.

    It would have been unusual for the parties not to have been working very hard on a settlement, even while they are working very hard on trial prep.

    That’s part of what makes this shit so expensive.

    But I suspect what also might make this expensive for FOX at least would be how their legal team has treated Dominion up to now. Jury selection probably did not give them what they might have hoped for. And that might leave them sticking on disclosures.

    This is a somewhat unusual instance where the interests of the plaintiff’s attorney in seeing numbers put up on the scoreboard actually are in alignment with the damaged plaintiffs. Dominion maybe even has a greater interest in publishing the settlement and forcing a public acceptance out of FOX, even if it means leaving money on the table.

    And any protracted financial negotiations or worse, a trial for damages, stands a high risk of exposing proprietary financial arrangements FOX has with local operators that they can’t afford to have leaked.

    The Armageddon scenario for FOX is one where they are forced to abandon key on-air talent. But I suspect they’ll do that before they expose their crooked arrangements with local providers.
