It’s important to remember here that, however suspicious his campaign expenditure reports appear, having large numbers of $199.99 disbursements is not a criminal violation. And of course, as you know the burden of proof in a criminal case rests on the prosecution. I think there is public interest in what Phillip Bump (and Mother Jones, and the NYT, and others) has done here exposing these fraudulent expenses. But think it is very unlikely that any criminal prosecution will come from that.
Mr. Bump has a book to flog. And CNN has 168 hours of air time to fill each week. They have a mutual interest here that diverges from the interest of the United States Attorney’s office.
That being said, I do think Santos has truly well fucked himself. But he’s probably done so on the other side of the ledger.
Very superficial digging on the part of reporters has already revealed that Mr. Santos’ campaign reported income from straw donors, donors who do not exist, and donors who are not U.S. citizens. Journalists have easily been able to uncover patterns of donations that would indicate illegal bundling and conspiracies to assemble groups of straw donors. And nobody, including Mr. Santos, his accountant, or his campaign treasurer (who has since quit and gone into hiding) have been able to explain the very large, six figure campaign loans that appear in the filings. Mr. Santos can’t explain the income. His campaign has reclassified the donations, There are no public records that would substantiate Mr. Santos ever having obtained these funds by any legal means.
And finally there is the absolutely ominous fact that the Department of Justice Public Integrity Section has requested that the FEC terminate it’s investigation of Mr. Santos and his campaign. PIN, it must be noted, has a reputation in recent years for declining to prosecute these kinds of cases, ever since AG Holder intervened in an appeal of the conviction of Ted Stevens and ordered a motion to dismiss when it was discovered that PIN prosecutors had violated discovery in the original criminal trial.
It’s possible that PIN may see this as an opportunity to finally restore some of their tarnished public reputation. If so, I don’t think they’ll attempt that by launching a long-shot on the phony expenditures.

Koch isn’t a Trump supporter, and part of his motivation is to shut Trump out. But that doesn’t make him a good guy. He’s the money behind ALEC, the group that pushes rightwing legislation through state legislatures, and he’s a major force in climate denial. His oil and chemical businesses are notorious polluters.
Ideologically, Koch is a small “l” libertarian. He believes in doing whatever the fuck he wants without interference from regulators. Nobody he picks to be our next president will be an acceptable candidate.
Beyond that, the notion of one person having that much power over our political process goes against our democratic principles. And there’s no way that, having bought a president, he won’t treat the president is an employee.

And it was clearly a privilege he was aware of, enjoyed a great deal, and intended to have fun with, regardless of any consequences to the United States.
It seemed to me everyone grew accustomed to the understanding that President Trump was unconcerned about protecting classification and security. His lifestyle and habits produced thousands of vulnerabilities, from undocumented spies on staff at his trash palace resorts, to spies circulating among the guests and admirers he surrounded himself with, to his habitual use of unsecured mobile devices, to his frequent and casual sharing of sensitive military intel during state visits.
And given his boorish, and delusional personality traits, it was also to be expected that after his humiliating defeat he would continue to be a risk while projecting that flaw onto his opponents.
What I did not expect was that Republicans would be so delusional as to join him in that projection. I’m just gob-smacked that Republicans have grown so reflexively and instinctively partisan that they would choose to compare Trump’s national security performance as CIC to any other president.
Openly inviting us to take a stroll through Trump’s shocking history of national security breaches is like inviting us all to recall how he and Senate Republicans gleefully engineered the US economy into shedding 30 million jobs in less than a year.
The history of billionaires pouring huge sums early into nationwide nominating contests is a very checkered one.
