Everyone who signs on the dotted line for a business or consumer loan knows that loan is dischargeable if paying it back becomes too onerous. But Congress has decreed that student borrowers are special, and MUST pay back their loans, NO EXCEPTIONS, come HELL OR HIGH WATER. Let’s see, what other ironclad commitments are there in life? Military enlistment contracts. Child support. Prison sentences. That’s about it. Except the military can discharge enlistees, courts can suspend child support, and presidents and governors can pardon prisoners.     Encampments along the Texas streets have been dismantled as well as the number of U.S. Border Patrol agents has been increased as Biden prepares to land in the area on Sunday.

    El Paso mayor Oscar Leeser called for a state of emergency last month as thousands of illegal migrants ravaged the border city.

    The only way I’d even consider student loan forgiveness is if the borrowers go through bankruptcy to discharge the debts owed and the government gets out of the student loan business forever.

    As it is now, these borrowers can’t use bankruptcy, but if that were changed, a lot of bankruptcy lawyers would have a lot of new business as these kids seek to skip out on paying their debts. The bankruptcy should follow the borrowers for a minimum of ten years. Once lenders have to deal with these bankrupticies destroying their loan portfolios, they’ll not be so willing to make new loans to people who want to spend five years getting a degree in interpretive dance or some other such non-useful field of study.

    The actions of government have caused this debt problem, and it’s time for the government to simply get out of this foolishness because it’s actually hurting the people who think a college “degree” is the do-all, end-all for a good life. I’d rather have a good HVAC guy than a sociology major working on my furnace. There is nothing wrong with have a skill or trade versus some pice of paper from a college or university recording four r more years wasted learning something that will never generate the cash flow through employment to pay off the debt.

    Get the government out of education entirely, and these colleges and universities will have a come-to-Jesus epiphany about the tuition they’re charging.
