Interesting to see the province of Ontario planning to restore the Toronto-Timmins Northlander passenger train, scrapped by the previous Liberal Government when they planned to sell off the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission. The ONTC is a provincial crown corporation tasked with providing transportation links in the rural Northern part of the province, and prior to 2014 also operated an airline and a telecom company.
Interesting that they are choosing brand new rolling stock. Tge Northlander of old often used hand me down rolling stock, including in its final years, used Toronto commuter coaches. Ontario Northland has stayed in the passenger rail business even without the Northlander, as the Polar Bear Express mixed train serves a primarily road less area on the Northern end. Never thought Siemens could design a version of the Venture train set this small, 2 coaches and a cab car, pulled by a Charger locomotive. Once again, this design, originally adapted for the North American Market by Florida’s Brightline, is proving very adaptable.

I believe it was QoS McHillbilly who yesterday scoffed at the notion that Tesla should be worth more than Ford or GM. Wasn’t it?
Anyway,
Did you know there was this thing called @ 10 debt-to-equity ratio?
GM. 172.53%
F. 304.64%
TSLA. 8.92%
GM and Ford are massively indebted to – well, to their unions, by and large. Tesla? That’s a really fuckin’ low ratio. Some might say too low, but they’re the ones who bought Tesla in, say, May.
Tesla’s EBITDA is around $16B. GM’s is around $21B. GM, a massively larger company, has an EBITDA only about 30% greater than Tesla’s. Since those earnings are before subtracting interest expense (that’s the I in EBITDA), there’s very little left after factoring in this huge expense.
This is why Tesla is so much more valuable than either GM or Ford. Company size or vehicle output have nothing to do with it. What matters is how quickly a company can respond to future opportunities. In this regard debt is a ball and chain around the ankles of GM and Ford, and always will be.
If Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit had any money, he’d be a buyer of Tesla now. He doesn’t have the money, and he’s reliant on dividend income, so he won’t. Instead he’ll brag about how high the dividend percent is on 3M these days, since he’s lost 30% of his investment in the company.

12,
Wow. Good golly.
I knew it must be going badly. But I wouldn’t have imagined this badly. That is a lot of frantic rationalization going on there to resolve the perfectly understandable fear and regret this troll is experiencing this joyous holiday season.
To recap in brief, for a premium that amounts to the price of a small Crate and Barrel patio set this troll placed the all-electric luxury truck he’s been dreaming of at risk, betting that the price of TSLA could not fall from 170 to 125 this month. At the half way mark we are half way to our goal!
Now I’m the last guy on earth to bet on these things like this troll did. I have no idea how unlikely this kind of price plummet might be. But that’s probably why I haven’t placed any such bet. Ever.
But another reason might be that I don’t get big tinglies and a restored sense of purpose and meaning to my life from this kind of pointless risk (and I used to own a couple of paragliders). I’m also not desperate to fill a moral void in my life with some kind of fabricated meaning.
And here I’m giving this troll credit that this is money he can afford to place at risk. There’s a strong case to be made that this might not be true for him.
But even if we assume that this troll can easily afford this loss, it’s still going to be a stressful holiday season for this troll, white-knuckling his way through each day watching the price drop, distracted and quiet at family gatherings, unable to enjoy the bowl games, silently waiting for the trade to expire and praying that it works out. I hope it doesn’t!
But that hope costs me nothing. And even if this troll survives this remarkably stupid episode financially (why not?), I’ll still have spent the month gleefully celebrating a fantastic holiday season with friends and family, sharing great times, looking forward to a great 2023. His suffering is just the cherry on top.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@12 “Instead he’ll brag about how high the dividend percent is on 3M these days, since he’s lost 30% of his investment in the company.”
Yield on 3M is 4.9%. That’s also my basis or cost yield, because I paid $121 for the 3M shares I now own. On paper it looks like I bought 3M in September for $121 and flipped it in December for $128, for an annualized 23% gain, but for tax purposes the huge gain on Exxon shares I sold this year is offset by a huge loss on the 3M shares I previously bought and just sold, and I now own the same number of 3M shares and owe no taxes on the Exxon gains. I also got a double-sized 3M dividend this month because I held onto the old 3M shares until after the ex-dividend date.
Of course, you wouldn’t know about this, because a genius investor like yourself never has any paper losses in his portfolio that he can use for tax offsets when he sells stocks and realizes taxable capital gains, which is probably something you do daily or at least weekly with your options flipping. But I’m not as good at this as you are, so I occasionally have underwater stocks in my portfolio, which I creatively use to legally avoid taxes when I cash in my winners.
So, for your future reference, I now own 3M at $121, and Exxon at between $65 and $80, having gotten rid of my $36 Exxon shares that I bought in March 2020 and sold 2 years later for $108 for a piddling 200% gain in 2 years. Like I said, I’m not as good at this as you are, and I’m the first to admit it.
By the way, after this week’s pounding, my stocks are up only 1.7% for the year, excluding dividends; no doubt you’re doing much better, so why don’t you tell us? As Dizzy Dean said, “it ain’t braggin’ if you done it.” You, of all people, surely are familiar with the wisdom of pitchers.

Said lawsuit would activate the even higher likelihood of a countersuit. It’s how he rolls. Moreover, it’s how the Trump organization rolls. Trademark infringement.
Don'tTakeLegalAdviceFromADumbFuck spews:
@28
In a fantasy legal system the countersuit would be based, and not immediately dismissed, on what?
That plaintiff has every right to lift intellectual property from a third party for commercial use?
That copyright law does not apply to an image one sees on a website?
That the definition of fair use includes profiting off another’s intellectual property?
That Plaintiff is the exPresident so can legally steal any document, image or music produced within the United States because the best, better than Lincoln?
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
Get this kids.
At the start of the month this troll sold a 30 day insurance policy to another investor to protect them against their TSLA shares burning down to 125. He did this just as the CEO of TSLA was going BIG TIME making a global ass of himself prompting a bunch of the largest private shareholders in the company to call for his removal, where the company’s very, very big competitors are setting records with preorders, and where the company was missing enough year end sales orders (thanks Biden) that they are having to give big cash incentives to close deals.
Now all that could turn around next year. Tesla could finally make good on it’s vapor-truck. They could finally fix enough of the quality control issues that they don’t lose their established customer base. They could complete their plans for expanded production and meet their promised delivery dates, restoring sales, etc. And Musk could appoint someone else to run things at Tesla until he gets this Twitter fetish resolved.
But ain’t none of that happening in the next two weeks.
What the fuck do analyst projections of next year’s earnings have to do with calculating price risk between now and the end of this month? This is like watching your next door neighbor setting up to deep fry his Christmas turkey in his living room and offering to insure the asshole against a fire through the end of the month, because you saw him replacing the batteries in his smoke detectors.
I’m not the expert around here about this shit. Supposedly this troll is. But this gives me doubts. Professionals who make and sell insurance make their money by being experts at analyzing relevant risk. And I guess they have some really sophisticated statistical tools to weigh that risk against premium income. So while it might be compared to gambling, it’s gambling in the sense that you are the house, making the odds. Not knowing any better, I’ve just always assumed that clever options traders are doing something just like that. With this comment from this troll it sounds more like he’s trusting “his gut” and some “system” just like every other degenerate punter.
I’m only guessing. But my guess is that the share price of Tesla has undergone most of the price drop it was probably destined always destined to face this year, and this month. I’m assuming even Elmo will pull his head out of his ass and realize that the shit he’s doing to try to save his reputation is not worth the potential financial losses. And what’s happening at Twitter probably was inevitable once the offer was accepted. He paid too much. Way too much. And even he knows that. That left him with no other choice but to gut the company leaving it unable to do meaningful content moderation, and all that this entails – loss of quality content providers, loss of advertisers, loss of accounts, loss of traffic, etc. But he can do all those things and still keep his stupid mouth shut.
There’s a lesson to be learned there. This stupid troll could have sold his options and earned a few thou and kept his stupid mouth shut about it. He’d still be sweating out his holidays down in his basement hovering over the refresh key and jumping every time his phone notification chimes. And next spring he could fondly look back on this play as he orders some cheap aluminum patio furniture from Target or Wayfair. But I wouldn’t know any of it. And I wouldn’t be able to take so much vicarious pleasure from knowing it, making my holidays just that much sweeter.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

29,
His counter would have to allege harm.
No legal basis, no harm, no standing.
I mean, yes Trump’s sparkle magic lawyer teams have worked with less. But they are also getting marched into federal courthouses by U.S. Marshals in plain sight in the middle of the work day and into the chambers of federal judges right after docket publication of show cause orders and sanctions. So it’s probably going to get harder to find enough clowns to fill the car at some point.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
29,
It’s one of the most unforgiving federal statutes that I’m aware of.
No intent requirement.
100% liability for actual damages in addition to statutory damages per instance of up to $30,000 per individual infringement if the copyright violator is unwitting. If the holder can show the infringing party knew the statutory damages jump to $100,000 per infringement.
The actual infringement is quite often very cut-and-dried, famous Beatles not withstanding (I actually like George Harrison – weird, I know). Action in many typical cases settles around damages. It’s actually surprising how many big companies steal like this. It’s far more common than most people think. Young artists are frequent victims. Shitty, really. But establishing the infringement is quite often trivial. And big companies will typically respond with a settlement offer that isn’t really that bad.
But if this Trump thing is really what it looks like, it’s way too late for anything like a simple settlement. The holders of the NFT tokens may not exercise any ownership rights with respect to images derived from copyrighted content. He sold them worthless trash under false pretenses (what’s new, right?). So they are also entitled to their money back, etc. Really a mess.
Nothing but blue sky for lawyers though.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sure looks like it, unless they can fence it. What I remember is a buyer of stolen property can’t acquire good title, as countless good-faith purchasers of the Brooklyn Bridge learned to their dismay. So all the NFT purchasers actually own is an image of Trump’s visage, and the rest isn’t theirs. Their biggest legal problem mostly likely is that Trump’s going to be judgment-proof, if he isn’t already.

@61 Given the GOP’s vaunted internal party discipline, it’s surprising to see this vicious infighting. I guess Republicans just don’t like each other. That’s understandable; nobody else likes them, either.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@67 There’s precedent for that, as you’re no doubt well aware. But first you have to wander into the desert, and then will your entire estate to a random motorist who picks you up and takes you back to civilization.

I see two big downsides to being the World’s Richest Person.
One, security concerns: Half of humanity wants to kidnap you for ransom, and the other half wants to kill you because you’re an insufferable asshole.
Two, when you’re on top, the only direction is down.

“It’s all of the branches (controlled by republicans) at this point working together to destroy democracy. The republican state legislatures want to throw out the votes, the republicans in congress want to throw out the votes, the republican ex president wanted to throw out the votes. The Supreme Court annex of the federalist society is now hearing a case to legalize throwing out the votes.”
I see a trend, republican voters are fine with anything, like abandoning Democracy, if that keeps them in power.

Republicans (older, white, evangelical racists) wish to permanently establish themselves as a ruling minority.
Democracy is incompatible with that goal.
So it should not surprise us to see Republicans publicly question the utility of democracy while operating behind the scenes, to quietly dismantle it. David Duke’s successful election to the Louisiana legislature and his nearly successful run for the US Senate all began with challenges to elections and voting.

Elon Musk says he will step down as Twitter CEO if voted out by a poll he tweeted
Headline from an hour ago
Elon Musk: Twitter users vote in favor of boss resigning
A total of 57.5% voted “yes” after Mr Musk asked his 122 million followers whether he should stand down.
>> Whats he gonna do? Stepping down would be the smart thing to do. Do you think he assumed he was loved so much they wouldn’t vote him out?
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
74,
Most leaders assess the value of their contribution to the organizations they lead as far greater than they are. It’s pretty rare that an individual comes along whose personal charisma, vision, inspirational character, and judgement are so exceptional that they make the difference between organizational success and failure. But every CEO thinks they are that individual.
Musk knows Twitter is failing. By now he knows that its failure was preordained on the day he agreed to buy it. Not because of his failures as a leader. But because of his failures as an investor. He paid so much, and burdened the company with so much debt, that it can no longer succeed without first going through a big period of failure as a company.
I think his departure or his retention on these terms is planned and intentional. If he leaves now “he did not quit” or run away from his own mistakes. And the inevitable subsequent failures of the company are not “his fault”. If he stays it is because “users demanded his leadership”. And whatever comes next (lots of bad leadership and failure) it must be endured and tolerated at least with grudging acceptance by users.
This is aimed at journalists, especially business journalists, as a way to reframe the media narrative around Twitter. It’ll probably work at least somewhat because business journalists are only surpassed in stupidity by sports journalists.

“The six liberal men and HA’s dumbest twat YLB who post here refuse to acknowledge their innumerable individual and collective errors, and wallow in their self-appointed perfection.”
Remember who you’re dealing with here, Vicious Troll. Here’s a previous quote I have used several times to show the incompetence and arrogance of these liberal progressive trolls, compliments of McFuckHead:
“…affluent, elite, healthy, and highly educated coastal progressives.”
That simple phrase describes perfectly the arrogance and self-centeredness of the liberal progressive trolls on HA.
