5,
The Real Pain is the unendurable prospect that a modern Trump-Republican majority in the House might actually have to compromise, and work in a bipartisan fashion if they hope to pass any legislation.
Think about just how noteworthy it is that even now, as the media analyze and dissect this election and its implications, the “b-word” has not been mentioned even once. The very first minute Democrats regained a majority, first in the House in 2018, then two years later in the Senate, the media began pounding away about “bipartisanship” and how “imperative” it would be for Democrats to negotiate, compromise and seek consensus across the aisle.
But in the ongoing media analysis of what is expected to be a slim House majority for Republicans there is no mention at all of Republican leaders beginning the work of negotiating and compromising with Democrats. None. All the attention is being shifted to the Freedom Caucus and the potential for a leadership revolt. And there’s no point in kidding around. The Freedom Caucus will gain concessions from the Speaker. Likely to be included in those concessions are a new rule allowing amendments to receive a floor vote if 10% of the party cosponsors, and a new rule preventing legislation from advancing out of rules unless a majority of Republicans already agree to support it.
Either of these two rules would enable an extremist, obstructionist minority within the GOP to prevent any bipartisan legislation from moving forward. The media and the GOP are conceding in advance that in order to form a majority leadership in the House the GOP will abandon bipartisanship before they even begin. There is absolutely zero expectation or demand for the GOP to behave responsibly or to enforce discipline on their own extremist members.
Remember all the criticisms directed at “The Squad” and “The Progressive Caucus” when Democrats regained the House? Remember how important it was for Democratic leadership supported by “moderates” to reign them all in? As a fig leaf Pelosi immediately took impeachment or even investigation of Trump’s constitutional abuses off the table. By March the new Speaker had PR arranged a puff-profile in the WaPo to define her agenda and she very pointedly declared that she opposed impeachment. And she went on to address the clear need to work across the aisle to get legislation passed.
All we will hear from Speaker McCarthy is his agenda for impeaching Joe Biden, investigating the FBI and the “stolen 2020 election” and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s new office budget with mini-gym and lap pool. We’ll be lucky if they don’t default the Treasury.
EvergreenRailfan spews:

McCarthy, Scalise, and Banks probably have special tax cuts they’d like to pass, some financial regulations they’d like to roll back, and maybe even some virtue signaling to their voters about police funding. But if they want any of it they’ll have to make deals.
But my point really isn’t about what McCarthy or McConnell want, or even what their voters want. My point is that every time Democrats obtain any access to power, however limited, the media across the spectrum begin calling upon them to compromise and negotiate with the GOP “for the good of the nation”. But for some reason the minute Republicans have any access to power that “good of the nation” disappears from existence.
What does America want? Do they want bipartisanship? That’s the default setting according to every single journalist, editorial board, and “independent” voter being interviewed in an Iowa coffee shop by Salena Zito. But if that is really true, then why does that demand from voters for bipartisan compromise suddenly retreat the minute a old white guy in a blue suit holds the gavel?

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
I just want to make clear that I personally don’t believe that Republican leaders like McCarthy are actually powerless to cure their party of the MAGA cancer. But like a lot of advanced stage cancers, I think the effective treatment would be fairly aggressive and involve some a lot of real damage to the party that would require years of recovery – well beyond the 2024 cycle.
And while all that might be possible (albeit requiring much stronger and more determined leadership that is available) it would still have to take place in the wake of Dobbs. Whatever happens for the GOP going forward it will happen with them dragging around a 10 million vote anchor. It’s hard to even imagine what any real attempt to cut out the MAGA faction from the party would look like in that context. Any hope that the GOP might have to lessening the terrible damage of Dobbs will depend upon some very nuanced and disciplined messaging to voters if it is to have any hope of retaining the support of the Bible-Bros. That isn’t going to happen in the midst of an intra-party food fight, fueled by social media memes and Trump rallies.
I admire the ambition that is clearly being expressed by many Republicans to rid themselves of MAGA in the wake of this election disaster. I just don’t think it is any more realistic than their claims of a RED TSUNAMI this year. Structurally they just are not in that position. My best guess is that leaders will try. But they just won’t have enough stomach to stick out the losses.
And it is worth pointing out that the safer off-ramp was presented to them several times before. And they refused.
YLB spews:
@70 Actually I believe the GOP went through this before after the defeat of Barry Goldwater when they purged the Bircher and other nutjob elements out of the party.
Both those elements never went away and while they didn’t appreciate being purged, they never were going to support Democrats. So they became the ones who danced to the dog whistles..
And as they say, the inmates eventually took over the asylum. It’s still under-reported how drumpf got 10 million MORE voters in 2020 than it got in 2016, most of whom it seems never participated in previous election cycles. It seems unprecedented to me.
And as long as drumpf breathes, they’ll be a drag on the GOP.. Practically impossible to purge.

Trump is seriously over estimating his sway here.
Appropriate comment:
“He will eventually split and make his own party, take about 15 percent of the gop vote.

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
This is exactly what I mean when I’m talking about party message discipline:
https://twitter.com/TheRickWilson/status/1591828975000891393
It’s President Biden’s call. And I suspect we’ll hear from him pretty soon after the GA special. But if he decides to continue his fight then the party rallies to it’s leader. And people stop running messaging that weakens all of us and empowers Republicans.
RedReformed spews:
Well, that seem healthy. /s
“Well, I think if they win, I should get all the credit,” Trump said in an interview with NewsNation that aired Tuesday. “And if they lose, I should not be blamed at all. But it will probably be just the opposite.”
The former president even congratulated himself for encouraging certain Republican candidates to run for office. “I’ll probably be given very little credit, although in many cases, I told people to run,” he complained. “And they ran, and they turned out to be very good candidates.”
And this who Kill Social Security Republicans supported over a cliff.
RedReformed spews:

Then make that president Black, or a woman, or gay.
How would you respond to “concerns” about that president’s ability “to handle the job” given all the “disadvantages” of their Blackness? Or given all the “disadvantages” of the gender? Or given all the “disadvantages” of their gayness?

@77. Agreed. Biden is our strongest option. In the last cycle, I thought Elizabeth Warren was a great candidate, but I knew that Biden was stronger because he was more electable. That he turned out to be so wildly effective is just icing on the cake.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
76,
Just keep in mind that part of the price of holding an open primary with a dozen challengers (Andrew Yang? Howard Stern? Roy Cooper? Eric Adams?) in 2024 is that hundreds of millions of dollars that Jaime Harrison might put toward ground organizing, canvassing, and GOTV in the states to flip/hold state houses, to flip/hold House seats, and to pull swing Senate seats across the line, instead gets spent in places Iowa, New Hampshire. South Carolina, California, and Texas.
Part of the reason for Democrat’s relative success this year is owing to Harrison tripling the budget for ground game organizing and GOTV in swings this year, compared to 2018.
That’s where we won turnout. Preserving democracy means we have to do it again in 2024.
Politically Incorrect spews:
The Supreme Court helped out the Democrats mightily with their overturning of Roe v Wade. The Court should have waited to hear the case AFTER the election. They clearly did not see how much abortion case would galvanize the electorate against the Republicans and the Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
As for me, I was completely happy with leaving the abortion situation unaltered by the court. When they agreed to hear the case, they set in motion a way of denying the Republicans what the Republicans had thought was in the bag – control of the House and Senate. This is one of those instances where the conservative Court shot itself (and the Republicans) in the foot without any good reason for doing so.
Abortion is just about the best poverty-avoiding technique out there. It’s as plain as the nose on your face – you shouldn’t have children if you can’t afford them, and abortion is a good tool to avoid a life of struggle and poverty.
Now, if we could just get those low-income women to get abortions rather than popping out kids to fill the welfare rolls!
