Twenty one of fifty states have unified Republican Senate representation. That’s forty two votes right there.
Under current rules you can’t pass jack shit without them. Even if Dems pick up some seats this year in the Senate, as it appears we might in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Dems can still lose other seats later in states like Montana, Ohio, and West Virginia.
Because of the Connecticut Compromise rural, aging, pale skinned, liver-spotted, barely populated dirt states will continue to combine with the glory-of-human-slavery states to control 40 seats in the Senate for as long as we can forecast.

I remain watchful, and concerned about turnout. However, between the rapidly growing rage over this decision consigning women to second class citizenship whose most basic rights are not recognized by this court, and the surge in new registrations, I think the GOP’s hopes of gaining the Senate are dashed at their own hands. This will strengthen Kelly, Warnock, and Fetterman, preserve Hassan and Cortez Masto, and probably destroy Ron Johnson if he isn’t in leg irons by then. I’m hopeful and optimistic that in the new Senate the Majority Leader will enjoy a 52 vote majority. At which point it really won’t matter what games Manchinema play.
As to the electoral college, the situation is decidedly less dire numerically. But the threat that persists are these ongoing efforts to overturn lawful ballot counts via legislative fiat or official misconduct in certain states. What makes that method viable are the “winner-take-all” state laws that govern the awarding of electors in those states (nearly all). The Constitution is silent with respect to how any state chooses electors. So all that is required to remove the threat is a change in state laws. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPV) achieves that outcome fairly, safely, democratically, and sustainably.
NPV has already been signed into law in 16 states possessing 195 electoral votes. Once the combined total of states participating in the compact reaches 270 it goes into effect and the winner of the nationwide popular vote will be awarded those 270 EVs in the next presidential election that follows. Legislation is poised to continue moving forward in Minnesota, Maine, Arizona, Michigan, Virginia, Nevada and North Carolina. Legislation is proposed sponsored and available for consideration in Alaska, Utah, Montana, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. Progress in obtaining passage has been steady even as opposition from extremist Republicans has emerged. Moving legislation through the states is slow and tedious work. But it’s not nearly as slow or tedious as amending the constitution. And it can’t be overturned, or prevented by a 34 vote minority in the Senate. So I think it is the most practical and most promising option and one that has already made enormous progress. I’m hopeful the final states will be brought into the compact before the end of this decade and the next census.
That may seem like a very long time, but bear in mind that the state “winner-take-all” laws have been around for about a century. and their emergence and establishment in the 19th century took place over many decades as well, with some period of back and forth. The NPV compact would also probably remain vulnerable to defection for a period of time after its establishment. But once around 300 electoral votes are within the compact that period of vulnerability would come to an end.

The filibuster rule, as I understand, was intended to keep the majority from running roughshod over the minority, i.e. was defensive in nature. When the minority uses it as an offensive weapon to run roughshod over the majority, it’s no longer being used as intended, or for its original purpose.
The structure of the Senate itself gives the GOP what amounts to a supermajority; why do they need (or deserve) another supermajority on top of that one?
The filibuster has already been done away with for votes on budget matters. Why? Because passing a budget is vital. Thus, it’s another step, not a departure, to also do away with the filibuster for votes on other vital subjects, like voting rights and gun safety. Is protecting the imperiled right of millions of Americans to vote less important than spending bills?
The argument that the filibuster is somehow sacrosanct isn’t defensible based on history or logic. There needs to be a legitimate reason for it, otherwise misuse had rendered it illegitimate.
Final thought: If Republicans retake the White House and Congress in 2024, how long do you think McConnell will keep the filibuster if Democrats use it to block the GOP’s agenda? I’d give it less than 5 minutes. So if the filibuster’s going to go anyway, which it surely will the moment it becomes inconvenient for Republicans, it should go while there’s still a chance to save our right to elect presidents.

Mom could cook up a Sunday Dinner like she did 60 years ago up until about 3 years ago. I really miss the food she could make.

Was just watching the CFL, both games tonight had EWU Alumni on them. It’s partly out of the sense of feeling “belonging” to the society that is threatening them. When people feel they don’t belong then they don’t feel they have any real stake in respecting or preserving the society that is threatening them.
The lack of violence accompanying the fifty year crusade by “conservatives” to deprive women of control over their bodies could be due to a couple of reasons. One might be that women don’t feel existentially threatened by this reversal and stripping away of control over their own bodies. Not plausible, perhaps. But always possible.
Another reason might be that women, collectively, still feel empowered within the system and still feel a sense of belonging. So while hundreds of thousands may be demonstrating this weekend, and millions more may be looking for a way to respond, they may also be doing all that accompanied by a real sense of both belonging in the society and the system that threatens them, and with a stake in the future of that society and empowerment to change it. This is probably the more plausible explanation for why these demonstrations are unfolding the way they are. There is real outrage. But it is outrage accompanied by intention, and purpose, not a powerless or impotent outrage.
If Trump Right disappointment continues, it could presage a very bleak future for Republicans.
