But we don’t have to spend our time and energy harmonizing with him.

    If we want to prevent their bigotry and authoritarianism we have to outnumber them at the polls. To do that we have to increase turnout among the population who are not Republicans, and who are not “a bunch of Nazi sympathizers,” “frauds, fakes, and phonies.” At this point Republican voters (that being the people who now habitually vote for bigotry and authoritarianism) are irredeemable. We all have to admit that. Then focus exclusively on communication, outreach, and turnout targeting non-Republicans who don’t vote. And that’s actually easy. We know who they are. We know what they want. And we know how to talk to them. We just have to do that. And only that.

    Today, Jones insists that the members of an ever-growing cast within the government of Florida ordered her to “fudge” the numbers. Back in May 2020, however, the Associated Press reported that she had not alleged “any tampering with data on deaths, hospital symptom surveillance, hospitalizations for COVID-19, numbers of new confirmed cases, or overall testing rates,” and that she had acknowledged that “Florida has been relatively transparent.”

    Why did Jones initially decline to make such allegations? Because, as she knew full well, she had not been in a sufficiently senior position to have been able to do such a thing, even if she had been asked. In her role as the manager of the dashboard, Jones did not have the ability to edit the raw data. Only a handful of people in Florida are permitted to touch that information, and Jones was not among them. Instead, each day she was given a copy of the data and charged with uploading it into the system in a manner determined by the epidemiological team. Had she for some reason decided to alter that copy, it would have been obvious to everyone within seconds of its being compared with the original.

    There is an extremely good reason that nobody in the Florida Department of Health has sided with Jones. It’s the same reason that there has been no devastating New York Times exposé about Florida’s “real” numbers. That reason? There is simply no story here.

    Consider: Degen has been trying to get his gutters cleaned for over two years now. Had he opted for a higher quality, 9/12 standing seam metal roof with 6 inch gutters and 5 inch downspouts this really wouldn’t be much of an issue. But that roof would have cost more than four times his 2/12 rolled asphalt roof. And the larger, commercial gutters and downspouts weren’t offered by his trailer manufacturer. So instead Degen needs somebody to mount his trailer every year to remove the four to six inches of evergreen needles that accumulate. And those workers have not been available since the Stephen Miller Special.

    Now at this point, Degen’s trailer foundation such as it is will not support the greater loads imposed by a much more robust, truss roof structure with standing seam metal. And replacing the stacked cinder block foundation is cost prohibitive owing to the need to disconnect utilities and temporarily abandon the trailer during foundation placement. So instead Degen will eventually have to resort to installing a freestanding pole structure around his trailer to support an entirely separate roof system.

    Eventually the trailer manufactured home market will gradually shift away from so many of these ultra-cheap, but ultimately more maintenance intensive options as low cost maintenance labor continues to be in short supply.

    From a visual storyteller perspective, given the limited examples shows, the kids of color are the one talking about social learning. So one might assume the kids of color care less about math and more about getting the viewer to show feeling and compassion (to them.).     Undeterred, reader M. A. continues to submit comments, up to half a dozen a day, impervious to realizing that comments don’t post. One can only guess why s/he (they?) makes the effort; perhaps writing is a cathartic activity for this individual; from this distance, they appear to be someone needing to get things off their chest, but what do I know. Nor do I know where comments originate from; they could come from a lonely cellblock for all I know, and perhaps be the individual’s only lifeline to the outside world. It’s all wide open to speculation. It just seems a little strange that someone would churn out comments knowing they don’t post, that’s all. It’s a mystery.

    @111 Totally off-topic. Teachers unions have nothing to do with America’s never-ending epidemic of gun deaths. But Republicans want to put all types of guns in everyone’s hands, with no restrictions (or tracking), and it’s understandable that’s a conversation Doc and other Republican asswipes don’t want to have, so they change the topic.

    Since we’re now on another topic, teachers unions are the price of having teachers. Who would go to college for 4 years to get a job paying $26,000 a year? But now that Republicans are making teaching an imprisonable offense, red states aren’t going to have teachers anyway. They don’t really need them. All their kids are already being homeschooled.

    We’re going to need educated engineers to keep ahead of China’s weapons development (Russia doesn’t seem to be much of a problem in this respect), and biologists educated in something more realistic than intelligent design to save us from the next Chinese bat virus. Fortunately, we still have blue states where a Ph.D. in science means something.

    We’re not yet a nation of dumbfucks. We’re only half a nation of dumbfucks.

    @113 His comments don’t post, either. They did for a while, because I fancied myself “acting editor” and moderated comments for a time, but I no longer do that. I quit that job and reverted to my original role of contributor. No comments have posted since then.

    If he ever finds out who I am (he sued Goldy for this information, which is why he’s banned from HA), and sues me for not posting his comments on Steve’s blog, my defense will be, “I’m just a contributor. That’s not my job. Sue the dead editor.” He won’t grasp the logic of this, of course. His understanding of law, from what I’ve seen, is primitive.
