    Recently saw the Perfect 36, a documentary on Magellan TV about the fight in the Tennessee House over ratification of the Equal Suffrage Amendment. Tennessee was the last hope to ratify it before the 192O Election. The anti-suffrage people put up a fight, thought they had the votes, the pro-amendment crowd was going at each other, as well as the opponents. Came down to a Rep that could be described as a Mommas Boy changing his vote.

    Got curious where Washington was in the battle to ratify the 19th. Shocked we were 35th, having passed our own amendment in 1910 thought we would have ratified it early, turned out the Washington Legislature was trying to be 36th, but couldn’t wait much longer. The Perfect 36 didn’t cover that part, but it would have been a great contrast. Here it cleared at least one House unanimously, and was introduced by a female legislator.

    A majority of the Court effectively ruled that, yes, in fact, troops do have to follow orders, including an order to take a vaccine. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch, dissented from the majority.
    Thomas did not explain why he dissented, but Alito published a brief opinion, joined by Gorsuch, which lays out why he thinks that judges should be allowed to countermand orders handed down to military personnel by their commanders.

    Think of the kinds of orders that military personnel have to obey — “take that hill,” “guard this prisoner,” “cease fire.” And even if Alito did not intend for his dissent to apply to such battlefield orders, his dissent could effectively neutralize major military assets while religious liberty cases brought by service members are being litigated. Imagine, for example, if the captain of an aircraft carrier is ordered to deploy his ship close to Ukraine — but the captain refuses because, for religious reasons, that captain believes that Vladimir Putin should prevail in his war against Ukraine.

    I have no disagreement with the Austin v. SEALs decision. I do have two comments:

    • Liberals who delight in Kavanaugh’s concurrence that deference to the Commander in Chief is so clearly spelled out in Article II that there isn’t any real way to override it won’t be so happy when it’s a liberal court case with a conservative president in office.

    • Here’s part of the Gorsuch dissent:

    The exemption procedure that the Navy set up included
    no fewer than 50 steps, and during the first 35 steps, none
    of the various officials who processed requests gave any consideration to their merit. Decl. of A. Stephens, Exh. 1, ECF

    Duh, Privatization of some government functions simply doesn’t work. This should not be a for profit business.

    The privatization is the third such effort IRS has administered since 1995, with previous iterations quickly canceled due to poor management and negative returns. IRS launched the most recent program last year after President Obama signed a law mandating it in 2015. (so it was administered by the trump administration.) The IG previously found in a scathing report that the private companies were leaving taxpayers vulnerable to scams and exploitative practices, being trusted to self-report complaints and bringing in just a small fraction of the debt they are assigned to collect.

    The office found in 2018 that one-in-five taxpayers targeted by the private companies were living below the federal poverty line.

    Sounds about right that the private firms overseen by the conservative trump administration targeted the poorest and least able to pay. Cruelty is the point.

    Basically the city is arguing you have no constitutional rights if people in your vicinity are rioting or assaulting cops, and the police have no duty to distinguish the innocent from the guilty. The country “Ukraine” didn’t even exist until 100 years ago, and its current borders weren’t set until after World War 2. So when Putin says “Ukraine isn’t even a country, it’s part of Russia,” he isn’t up to date, but he isn’t off by much. And there’s nothing new about fighting over the location of those borders. Just ask Timothy Snyder.

    36 years, 2 million miles for one of TriMets first generation Type 1 LRVs. It’s replacement is under construction, but I wonder if TriMet will have a few last until they hit 40?     I did take a look this morning, and what I saw highlights Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit’s absolute silliness of looking at short-term return and then boasting about it.

    YTD is about 85 days or so. Three months is about 91 days or so. Between these measures there is very, very little difference in time. Only six days, or one trading week.

    YTD the S&P 500 is down 8.01%. Over three months the DJIA is down 3.89%. This is a 4% shift over those six days’ difference.

    YTD I’m down 1.5%, while over 3 months I’m up 4.92%, or.a difference of about 6.5%.

    Using the Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit method of cherry-picking the shortest time frame possible and then bragging of the performance during it, I could truthfully claim that during a six-day period in late 2021 I outperformed the S&P 500 by nearly 9%.

    Which means absolutely nothing.

    Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit’s investment performance over 85 days means absolutely nothing. It’s particularly meaningless when one considers the pitiful beginning balance he had.
